Nice win by the MIBs.
Thank goodness for the Clippers.
We are 2-1 with TD,Dice,RJ,Hill,TP starting and they haven’t lost a 1st Qtr yet.
I would still rather not see Bonner as 7th man, but against the Clippers you can’t go wrong regardless of who is playing.
Considering the lead the Spurs had in the 1st quarter, Pop was able to bring out guys sooner. Trying to get Bonner’s and Finley’s shooting touch back will be important, especially if Mason can’t shoot straight (looks like he’s falling into one of his new slumps).
Now with Blair and Manu teamed up in the 2nd unit, Hill is able to move to the 1st team. If they can get Bonner and Finley back into things, the 2nd unit will look nice once again.
Yeah that’s what worries me about Pop, why is he still trying to find Bonner’s shooting touch this late in the year? It is not going to help us win against the elite teams. Seeing more of Ian and Theo will. But not Bonner. Every time Bonner gets into the game during the 1st half it is a bad idea because those mins should be going to someone else. When Bonner plays, teams tend to get an offensive rhythm going, and then we have trouble slowing them down again.
Now Mase and Finley we will need.
Teams are overplaying Mase, they are not trying to let him get that jumper off. He needs to be ready to put the ball on the floor and challenge them. Even if they block his shot off the drive, he has to be willing to show that part of his game or they are going to continue to crowd him cause it is working. He should drive every now and then as see what happens.
All this Bonner hate seems pretty irrational to me. It is easier for good teams to stop smaller Mase and Fin than big and physical Bonner. So good-shooting Bonner would help us more against good teams. Against the Clips Bonner shot 3-8, better than Mase and Fin combined (1-6). If he would be back shooting as at the start of the season, we’ll win more games this year. In fact, we could win more than a couple of close games recently, if we could shoot 3s better.
I don’t think you see the forest, because of the trees.
There is NO game this year we have won or could have won by using Bonner.
If we won and Bonner played, consider it a win regardless of Bonner, never because of Bonner.
Please don’t get me started on Bonner.
Believe me, it is Pop’s decision to integrate Bonner into the rotation that is causing him so many problems.
Mase and Finley are guards, they SUPPOSE to be on the perimeter. You know, dribbling, passing, shooting jumpers, the usual guard stuff.
Bonner is a bIG, he is SUPPOSE to be able to dEFEND, rEBOUND, bLOCK shots and Bonner’s 3’s are a luxury, but we have to pay a huge tax when we get them, because he is terrible at doing what he is SUPPOSE to be doing.
We would win more games a lot easier if Bonner is only given garbage mins, PERIOD.
I think your hate impairs your judgement. Everyone and his mother knows that Bonner is a specialist. His role is to hit the 3s. Everything else, including defense, rebounding, blocks and dunks is the bonus. The most important stat for Bonner’s game is how many 3s he made and what was the %. If Bonner has the highest 3 % on the team, he is doing his job. Because he is big, his 3s are practically unguardable. If he is making them, he helps the Spurs to win. He gives us that unique weapon that other team may have trouble to match. Occasionally, Bonner would grab a rebound or even drive for a dunk. Those are just bonuses. Mase is a shooter too, and Finley is a shooter at this point of his career. Mase can play some point, but he is not an NBA-level point guard. His value is his shooting, just like for Bonner, except Bonner is bigger and so is harder to guard. Same with Finley, he doesn’t bring much more than some shooting. In particular, we rely on these guys (Bonner, Mase, Finley) to shoot some 3s for us. No, if Bonner is 3-8 on 3s, and Mase and Finley are combined 1-6, then I say that Bonner had better game than both Mase and Finley. If Bonner shoots higher % than other guys, he is helping the team more. This is a very easy argument to make. I say, if Bonner shoots well, give him minutes to shoot. If Mase shoots better, give minutes to Mase. Any speculations that somehow Bonner is bad for the team even when he is playing well, is just the hatred. For whatever reason you just hate the guy and cannot appreciate what he is bringing to the team. Even if Bonner plays his ass every game, you just cannot forgive him that he is not a Tim Duncan. This year we played without Bonner for quite a few games. Was it easier to win those games? Have we won more of them? The answer is NO, the Spurs were not better team without Bonner, and it was not easier for us to win games without Bonner. Good Bonner is good for this team, PERIOD.
RJ sucks though
"Yes, it's important that I have good numbers, and I'm well-respected as a player. But I think it's more important that I'm respected as a man." - Some Tall Guy Who Wore #50
Kondor,
For you I will explain why we LOSE with Bonner.
Lets start with defense:
When Bonner is on the floor he is either a 4 or 5. He can’t guard any PF from any elite team. He is either too slow, or too short depending on the match up.
So this means the opp fg% is going to go thru the roof, and that also means we will most likely be playing offense against a set defense, because we got the ball out of the net.
Defensively he can’t guard the rim, so if our perimeter defense breaks down and someone is beat off the dribble, Bonner can’t help, so again the opp fg% will go up and we play against set defense because we got the ball out of the net. This could also get us in the foul penalty quicker.
On offense:
Bonner is a spot up shooter. Which means he can’t be spotting up and offensive rebounding at the same time
Bonner is a 40% spot up shooter. Which means 60% of Bonner’s shots will result in a long rebound which lead to fast breaks.
I understand, anybody taking long shots could result in a long rebound, but when it is one of your BIGs taking them, the chances of you getting the rebound goes down tremendously because one of your rebounders is not in the paint.
Basically Bonner brings offense ONLY and we don’t need his offense because even his brand of offense can turn into easy points for the other team.
We have others that shoot the 3 well and defend, the Spurs don’t need to run gimmick line ups to score points. Playing Bonner is a gimmick, we have enough talent to beat people the old fashion way, with DEFENSE.
Just out of curiousity, GT… what is your opinion of Okur as a player?
Don't compare RJ to Sean unless he's coming up clutch while playing with a failing kidney.
Okur is no Bonner. Although he can stretch a defense because he has Bonner’s range. He also has a post game.
So you can’t cheat with Okur. This guy can P&P or P&R and you have to play him honest both ways. Not so with Bonner.
Just guard the P&P with Bonner.
On defense is where they really differ.
Okur can not match up with quicker PFs but he can for a little while. And he can guard the rim, and rebound. His size allows him to be a legit defender and he doesn’t have to take you out of your normal offense when he is on the floor.
You have to have a legit post defender playing him.
So I guess you would be OK with a trade for him that ships Bonner out… provided we don’t give too much up, obviously.
Don't compare RJ to Sean unless he's coming up clutch while playing with a failing kidney.
Hells yeah, if we could get Okur for Bonner, MAN yes.
BUT…
Utah is not crazy they know how rare of a player they have with Okur.
This dude would make any team he went to much better, and I know they don’t want him coming to the Spurs.
We would have to sell the farm for a 10 mill True Center that can post and stroke it too.
Town,
There are some good points there, thank you. And if we had Okur or Bargnani, we could just forget about Bonner. But among the players we have I see Mase just as shorter Bonner. He is not a good PG, and not a good defender. Yes, he is playing guard position, but all it does for us is that we can put him on the floor to handle the ball in a garbage time. He is not good enough to handle the ball in any other time. He can not hold his own on D with the likes of Kobe, Roy, Billups or DWill. And his shooting is not as good as Bonner’s. So, why should we play him instead of Bonner?
For all his deficiencies, Bonner rebounds better than Mase. May be we should go big and play Bonner at 3 sometimes, I don’t know, it depends on the matchup.
And, I am sorry, but no, this team does NOT have enough DEFENSIVE talent to beat people in old-fashioned way. Nobody replaced Bruce on the perimeter, and Tim is not getting any younger. As a result we are not able to beat people with defense.
Let’s play Bonner at 3!
