Spurs Clobber Kings in Close One 115-113
The Spurs played some really good defense for the first 22:20 of the second half to grab a win in Sacramento. They played terrible defense in the first half and abysmal defense for the last 1:40. Really, the Kings scored 19 points in the last 1:39 on 8 for 8 shooting including 3 3-pointers.
But, a win is a win on the road.
Your 3 stars:1 - George Hill: 23 points, 9 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in almost 42 minutes. All were team highs.
2 - DeJuan Blair: Tore it up in the first half with 7-7 shooting. Finished with 20 points on 9-11 shooting (missed his last two shots). The dude is magical.
3 - Tim Duncan: 22 and 13. And only played 29 minutes thanks to some early foul trouble.
*Honorary 4th star - Manu Ginobili: Also had 20 points with 6 assists.
Well, it is a win, but I am far from satisfied. Our defense just isn't right.
News of the night was the opening from the Kings announcers. They said a trade was imminent for the Spurs. So imminent that it might affect Pop's rotations. He went on to say that the trade was for a small forward and a backup point guard. I have find no corroboration. Keep your ears peeled.

is it FOR a backup pg and forward or are we getting rid of a backup pg/forward (like RoMaJu/Bonner)

RJ and Mace.

keep dreaming. Also, i’d rather keep Mace and get rid of Bogans. Mace’s D has got better, and Bogans gives us nothing, ever, on either end.

Mace did not play good D tonight – Bogans looked way better.

Mason is one of the valuable guys for trade. Bogans is not. In terms of expiring contracts you have two decent sized ones. A really big one would actually have been better in this case.
Mason + Bonner + Finley.
Mason has the most value of the 3 as a player right now in his career along with the contract going bye bye. There’s probably at least 1 additional player in that 3 that moves to get the salaries to match.

Yea Mason looked absolutely horrible last night, and Bogans made some mistakes in the first half. I loved that Bogans was hyped and talking to team and hustling.
I could hear him yelling “lets get a stop!”

i think defensive strategy was let them shoot whatever the hell they want, just dont foul them. When you’ve got that little time and that big of a lead, it’s acceptable. The likelihood of any team going 8-8 on (somewhat) contested jump shots (especially 3-3 from 3), is almost 0. that was just freak shooting.
LOL!!!

See that makes no sense to me. These are NBA players, expect them to make it not miss. If GHill had split his last two trips to the line like Manu and TD did, we would have been playing in overtime.
Using the “JUST LET EM SHOOT” strategy is why Tmac came back and beat us that time.
19 points in under 2mins is ridiculous and this should be a serious concern. If we can’t manage a lead better than that in the last 2 mins, nevermind, where’s my medication.

I was going to get it at the pharmacy yesterday, but I forgot my insurance card and it’s like $80 per pill.
Is it ok if I pick it up today, on my way back from work?

wait I don’t agree with you GT, the Tyreke Evans three, Bogans was all over him and the Nocioni 3 he was 27ft out.
The Kings just went on a freak run, the George Hill and Roger Mason turnovers are what hurt us the most during the run not the defense.
by JaySo on Feb 4, 2010 10:30 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes Evans RIPPED them both. I can’t blame the Spurs for him making great defensive plays.
But what I had a problem with is at the end, why were we not defending above the 3pt line.
Our guys were standing below the 3pt line. And they were just raising up and taking good looks at 3pt shots. Even if we make both FTs you can still lose if you don’t guard the 3pt line when a team is trying to trade you 3 for 2. That is the kinda things I am saying we need to do better. Understanding that a 2pt shot can’t beat you in that situation is crucial. When you are paying attention to detail on defense you don’t let that kinda stuff happen. Know who has the ball and what they want to do with it.
by GhosTown on Feb 4, 2010 11:10 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree that our 3pt defense has been suspect lately, but you can definately blame the offense when their not taking care of ball.
Give credit to their defense when miss on a contested shot is made, or even a block. When a steal is made the offense should be blamed for not taking care of the possesion.
by JaySo on Feb 4, 2010 11:40 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m with JaySo on this one. With a lead, pulling back to be sure you don’t give up an easy two makes sense. Make them make the longer shot.
Secondly, the offense getting stripped and layups that result isn’t exactly a situation that calls for defensive adjustments.

OMG! you guys do realize with a 107-100 lead and 39 secs left the only way you can lose is if the other team hits 3pts right? Trading 2pt baskets is a good thing as long as you are hitting your free throws, plus the free throws themselves are less pressure-ful if the other team hasn’t just hit a 3pt.
Again, I refer you back to the TMAC win against us.
by GhosTown on Feb 4, 2010 4:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, that isn’t exactly a true statement. It’s not the only way. If you let them just run to the basket for a layup their chances of making that shot is a hell of a lot higher than a semi-contested 3.
We specialize in misinformation around here. Facts and stats just get in the way.

Was the D that bad or should we credit the Kings for making everything they took? Especially in the final 1:39, I think our missing two FTs plus committing a turnover for an easy bucket were the problems. Other wise the score stays up around 9 and TD need not re-enter the game.
Sometimes the other guy is good and a bit lucky. Fortunately their luck ran out at the horn, and the score looks closer than the 4th quarter truly was.

I think it is terrible Defense by not paying attention to detail. AGAIN. Seems like we were making similiar comments vs the Denver.
making everything they took
Kevin Martin looked open on 99% of his shots and last I checked that was his strength, shooting jumpers.
Is it me or is Bogans like 4’11? He needs to stop crouching because he can’t contest jumpers like that. Somebody needs to give him Bruce’s phone number so they can arrange some tutoring sessions.
by GhosTown on Feb 4, 2010 8:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I really wish that Bruce had some kind of official position with the Spurs. I just hate that he’s not passing on all that knowledge of the system and the little techniques that made him such a great defender.

the bowtie he wears is kinda heavy and weighs him down a bit. So he’s now 6’6.5", of course, this is a small price to pay to be called Bruce Bowtie Bowen.
Bowtie Bowen almost sounds like some kind of ancient martial arts that is kept secret by it’s users.

Maybe they can give clinics. Instead of wasting their money on shooting coaches teams can just come play the Spurs and learn how to shoot perfectly.

Blair played spectacular. His hustle defense has continued to improve tremendously. And did anyone notice his patent Timmy move jumper? Wasn’t quite mid range jumper but it looks like his shot might be getting a little more versatile and he’s learning from the best. Jefferson also made some good attacks at the basket. The old Manu is coming back. All in all I was pretty satisfied. Granted it was just the Kings and we almost choked but I thought we played well.

I just do not get why the hell is Blair not playing more minutes?! He is FAR MORE effective my McKneeProblems ie McDyess. Just don’t get it. And if RJ hoists any more contested jumpshots, I’m going to break my tv. He has the athletic ability, why does he not drive to the hoop more. GOOD LORD I’m pissed off!

I kinda prefer Dice out there with TD, because it gives us more shot blocking at the rim size.
BAM BAM doesn’t defend as well as Dice. If you watch BAM BAM, he has that Karl Malone “swipe at the ball” defense thing going for him.
However BAM BAM and Manu have started working that pick and roll so I would love to see those two be our 6th and 7th man off the bench instead of Manu and Bonner.

SpursTradeRumor
The Sacramento announcer’s Spurs trade comment caused me to perk up my ears too. A backup point and a three?? The Spurs are pretty strong with Parker and Hill at the point with Ginobli as a pretty good third. As a matter of fact the Spurs are a little bit heavy at the one and three position. I think it is more likely for them to trade Mason, who hasn’t worked out as a point at all. When S.A. let Haislip go they became a little weaker at the small forward spot. Bonner can’t play it because he can’t defend against other quicker players at the position. He hasn’t worked out as a four or five and Blair seems to have solidified his hold on the position ahead of him. When S.A. plays Duncan, McDyess and Blair on the front line they are pretty strong inside. When they go to small ball things like the last two minutes of the Sacramento game happen. So who are the players other teams might be interested in? Mason, Bogan, Bonner and Mahinmi seem likely candidates. Another possibility, dare I say it, is Manu. His contract runs out and a lot of teams will offer much larger contracts than S.A. might not be willing to match. It is a business and Manu is on the downside of his career, so don’t be surprised to see him go for the big bucks. He has those security guards to pay at his home in Argentina. I’m sure he would rather stay a Spur, but…… Also the way Hill has been playing lends credence to a couple of rumors that Parker would be available for the right super star. In reality I would prefer to see the Spurs keep their big 3 at home. Wouldn’t you?
