Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Game Preview: Suns @ Spurs

This smells fishy.  An early, nationally televised game against a bitter "rival".  All things that don't seem to work in our favor this year.  But there's a first time for everything.

Star-divide

I'll admit to being a hack here:  Most of the stuff from the first Spurs-Suns preview is the same, so I just copied and pasted.  But if the shoe fits...

(37-23)

Tony Parker
Food Poisoning

Point Guard

I'm assuming Tony will play today, which isn't exactly a given, but that doesn't mean he'll be able to outdo Stevie "Ageless" Wonder.

Advantage: Suns

Steve Nash
Pretty Damn Good

Auxcuadro_medium

Manu Ginobili
6th Man

Shooting Guard

Manu's got his mojo going in the last few games.  Keith Bogans will probably be matched up with J-Rich at first, but Manu will get the bulk of the SG minutes and should be able to win this matchup.

Advantage: Spurs

Jason Richardson
J-Rich

Auxcuadro_medium

Richard Jefferson
Rich-J?

Small Forward

Even the corpse of Grant Hill can beat RJ.  Prove me wrong, damnit.

Advantage: Suns

Grant Hill
Not George Hill

Auxcuadro_medium

Tim Duncan
No Random Punctuation

Power Forward

Amar'e scores a lot.  Luckily for us, he gives up just as many points on the other end.  Oh, and we also have Timmeh.

Advantage: Spurs

Amare Stoudemire
Random Apostrophe

Auxcuadro_medium

Antonio McDyess
Jumpshooter

Center

Lopez just had a career game the other night, but it happened against the Clippers.  Even our defense isn't that bad.  Dice needs to come back strong from a string of dissapointing games he's put together lately, and the Suns are just the type of team to do it against.

Advantage: Tied

Robin Lopez
The Lesser Lopez

Auxcuadro_medium

George Hill
Great Role Player

Bench & Role Players

The Suns are still without Leandro Barbosa, but that doesn't mean they have no depth.  Channing Frye was a starter not that long ago, and Dudley has really come into his own.  Still, the BAM showed in the last game why they usually get the white box.  And no, I'm not including 3 of last game's starters in the BAM.  Only original members get that recognition.  I want to see a strong game from DeJuan tonight, and am curious as to whether Malik will earn any minutes after playing very well against Kevin Martin.

Advantage: Spurs

Jared Dudley
Good Role Player

Auxcuadro_medium

Gregg Popovich
Bring Back the Beard

Coach

I'm thinking Pop's beard had mystical powers, especially since the Spurs have been unable to come up with any of the final minute heroics from last season since Pop shaved it.  Bring it back already.

Advantage: Spurs

Other Factors

Auxcuadro_medium

Intangibles

Phoenix just blew out the clips.  We got our asses handed to us by the Rockets.

Advantage: Suns

Mojo

There is no mojo.  There is only pain.

Advantage: Suns

Winner

I always have a good feeling when we play the Suns, but not this time.  I have hope, but not a feeling of inevitability like in seasons past.  I'm going to go with my optimism, especially in light of the matchups.

Spurs.  Just because.

Keys To The Game

  • Defense - The Suns bring the league's most efficient offense to the table - we have to slow them down.  In years past, this wouldn't be a problem, but we've been pretty inconsistent on D this season.  Come on, Spurs - convince me it's not an issue.
  • Weather the Storm - Phoenix always comes out fired up to play us, and they usually jump out to an early lead.  We can't let it get out of control the way it did the first time we played them, or the way things got out of control on Friday.
  • Bench Play - The Spurs' bench is vastly superior, and they need to play like it.  The BAM scored 63 points in our last game, so expectations are definitely being raised.

Strength of Schedule

This is the first game of a back to back set for the Suns, who will be playing Denver at home tomorrow.  The Spurs also have a SEGABABA tomorrow night in New Orleans.  Hopefully this game won't go down to the wire, because our guys will need some rest before that one.

Where to Tune In

TV

This game is on national TV, so we got that going for us.  Tune in to ABC for all the "fun".

Online

As always, NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash.  Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area.  You know, when we're not at the games.

Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.  In fact, nobody can stop you from googling "atdhe". You can also shoot an email to dmenendez@gmail.com for more assistance.

Spurs League Pass audio is still free this year, so check it out.

Radio

If you're in the San Antonio area and aren't near a TV, tune in to WOAI (1200 AM).

play the youngin's

i think pop needs to play malik and ian more. i have been reading some posts of the people here and they are right on the money with there thoughts. well most people anyway

by gunnin' gervin on Feb 27, 2010 10:10 PM CST reply actions

I think they should start Ian next to Timmy and put malik ahead of finley and bogans and if those guys don’t deliver no problem neither does finley bogans and antonio

by Brian Ram on Feb 27, 2010 10:13 PM CST reply actions

I definitely think Malik’s earned playing time and early on in the game. I’m not as sold on Ian, but if Dice is going 0 for 4, then by all means, put in Ian. The problem is that unless Parker’s not back, either Ian or Malik is going to be in a suit. Can you see Pop putting Finley, Bonner or Bogans in a suit???

by Spurlady on Feb 27, 2010 10:21 PM CST reply actions

i think bonner only needs 4/6 mins to no minutes at all,his a 3pt shooter, but his not an all around player like a defensive stopper or even just a rebounder!!!plus his also inconsistent.his just atrocious!IMO..keith can hit those threes but his inconsistent…fin, well he can hit those threes so i guess 12-16mins won’t hurt so as keith 12-16mins…

by tp_09 on Feb 28, 2010 5:51 AM CST up reply actions

IF Bonner is hitting his 3s, by all means leave him in until he shoots himself into a slump. I still wonder how much injuring his hand has affected him.

by Manu ex Machina on Feb 28, 2010 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

Seeing as he was red-hot before the injury, and nearly ice-cold after; I’d say that it’s had quite an effect.

by J.R. Wilco on Mar 1, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

yeah Spurlady u are unfortunaly right about POP not wanting to bench Bonner, Bogans or Finley. What is up with some of these coaches not wanting to play these young guys? I mean of course the coaches see a lot of stuff we the fans dont but shouldn’t the coach try to give some of these guys run if the other guys aren’t delivering? on a lighter note. did anybody see Bruce Pearl’s horrid outfit during the Kentucky post game press confrence? He was looking like Craig Sager

by gunnin' gervin on Feb 27, 2010 10:37 PM CST reply actions

Think you have a small edge with Hill vs Dudley, Think the idea that Spurs have a better bench is silly. Richardson and Nash fade in and out but the Suns bench is actually very good. For the Suns to win would require Nash and Richardson to play well. Nash is playing hurt so tend to think you win. But as a Suns fan am very willing to be wrong.

that’s the only wrong formula for our appetite as fans…starting 4 shall i say?!we’ve got timmy right?
tp…i really prefer george,so that as a more of defense guy,he could stop early opp pg from anything,as much as possible!

by tp_09 on Feb 28, 2010 5:55 AM CST up reply actions

I think Jefferson should start and give him the ball earlier in transition because that’s the way he make for most of his points so he can build a comfort zone an build on it, Bogans is very inconsistent and finley is old and he should only be a straight up shooter if he can produce some pionts and D

by Brian Ram on Feb 27, 2010 11:24 PM CST reply actions

to work rj u need hill as starting pg rather than tp…which i strongly agree…see above comment!

Will give a confidence builder. The Suns have covered 5 in a row. You have to go back to 2004 to 2005 to find them covering 6 in a row. The odds are in your favor.

Hairston should play, he defends better than half the guys on the team and we all know he’s part of the team’s future so why not give him a shot now? And this Dwayne Jones guy seems to be pretty decent, any chance he can sign?

Phoenix favored

Article has its high points, but the overall outlook is not good. By the way Lopez is a beast around the basket and will hurt SA on the boards. The Suns speed will create problems for us and if Ginobli doesn’t have a hot hand shooting the Spurs will be in trouble. Phoenix is playing better ball right now and as much as I hate to say it, the Spurs are in a quandry. The team just hasn’t found the right combination and whats worse there may not be one. Still there is always a chance, but a loss here could drop SA into the eight spot with a couple of outsiders in hot pursuit. In a nutshell its put up or shut up time for Pop and the Spurs.

by jimjule on Feb 28, 2010 10:40 AM CST reply actions

At least it's a home game

Manu is shooting 42% from the field in home games this season. Bad but still much better than his 39% in away games. His numbers are much better overall at home so at least we have that going for us
