i voted jefferson – he is the most skilled out of the options. but i think hairston should be his backup, and if mini-ears doesn’t have it going, let hairston play.

neither finley nor bogans should start. finley should be used purely as a shooter off the bench in limited minutes (if he can get any form back on his shot). bogans? behind manu and romaju off the bench in the backcourt rotation. use him as a defensive pest – send him out there in short bursts to get under the skin of the opposition pg/sg/sf, play a little dirty.

but what do i know…

free malik hairston!

Malik just saw his first real game action in a while. i dont think that earns him a starting job quite yet. Jefferson has not contributed much, but he is more consistent than any of the others

by Ohio Spurs Fan on Feb 26, 2010 11:03 PM CST reply actions

Wow. 8 points and 5 rebounds for Malik in only 18 minutes ( on 4 of 6 shooting )….

( Too bad we may not see him in another game this season )

That may have been his Yawn treatment: Finally get some playing time, show what he can do, impress across the board, return to the bench for the duration of the season.

(I’m replying to your post, little o, but this is generally intended—it’s not directed at you specifically.)

At this point, there is nothing to “understand” about banning GT if you don’t already. You do understand, I think—you (and bella, and Hipuks, and whoever else) also just happen to disagree. Which is cool. You have every right to disagree. It’s a tough situation and there’s no way everyone is going to feel the same about it.

Those who were in favor of and responsible for banning GT have repeatedly explained their rationale (not that they needed to—they did it because they genuinely love this community and feel responsible to it). Are you asking them to explain yet again? Or do you just like to keep registering the fact that you disagree with them? Because if it’s the latter, I promise you—we get it already. You disagree.

Now, you can keep bringing up the fact that you disagree, but it’s not going to change anything about the situation, so I’m not sure what the point is unless it’s just that you like stirring the pot. If GT’s banning bothers you so much that you’re not happy at PtR anymore, you’ll have to find some way to resolve that issue for yourself. No one else can do that for you.

I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.

you are right in some points, as in, I completely understand why GT was banned, and that I don’t agree with it.

However, I wasn’t trying to stir the pot by asking what the phrase

He was a pill and he refused to be cool.

meant. I just never heard that figure of speech of calling someone a pill before and wanted jrw to explain it, or whoever understood him.

As far as my original reply to Manuwar, it’s primary purpose was just to be funny, not to stir the pot sort of speak.

You’re right, I don’t necessarily agree that Ghost Town should have been banned. I think there were other ways of dealing with the situation. This is the first time I can remember a true Spurs fan being banned from this site. When something of that magnitude occurs, I do believe a post would probably have helped us all understand the situation.

And in light of GT’s self-serving, delusional, victimization post, I don’t think it’s out of line to bring up the subject matter. (From what I can remember of the post, he made some valid points towards the end of his rant). Additionally, questions are still arising from a variety of posters.

Also, I’m sorry if you feel that we’re beating a dead horse. Or acting like errant children because we feel the need to joke about a sensitive subject matter. (Gallows humor used to be an acceptable practice on this site… maybe that has changed?)

Although the members of the inner circle may have discussed this issue ad nauseum, that doesn’t mean it translates to the actual blog. (I wish I had time to read every single post. But the fact of the matter is, like most members, I don’t).

Ultimately, this was Wayne’s decision and he made the call. That’s his right and I support him fully. I may not agree with his decision, but he has and will always have my full support and my appreciation for taking on a thankless job.

In the end, you’re right this is a community. A community of people with a passion for one thing… Spurs basketball.

So here’s to drinking champagne in June on a hot summer’s day while the Sickness floats by in a colorful barge cradling gold hardware in his arms.

Yes, things got ugly.

He was rude. He was insulting. He repeated the same arguments ad infinitum and succeeded in dragging at least half of the active threads into arguments about his pet gripes.

He ignored multiple attempts to reason with him. We stated what we were asking of him, and he persisted in dragging every post into the same discussion. The more casual the PtR member is, the less they might have noticed. But if you read every comment like some of us do, then it was overwhelmingly evident that he was not interested in meeting us even halfway.

When that kind of disrespect is repeatedly shown to the members of PtR, as well as those who run the site, then it should not be allowed to continue.

Why the heck do we need to explain that we banned GT? He was here for 1 month, at most (even that?), he got into fights with people, he posted the same comment 100 times, and he annoyed the hell out of many people. Was he so important that we needed to address banning him publicly? We explained it over and over again in the comments section. If people care, they probably know.

There’s no need for you to call BS, when I post multiple contradictory reasons as excuses for my mistake.

The whole fun of the “italics” comment and the “shift the odds” comment was that in one I argued that I hadn’t misspelled but instead had simply forgot to italicize. And in the other (posted immediately afterward) I stated that I’d meant to post it with a misspelling in order get better odds for making money betting on the grammar competition.

But it can’t be both. The whole point of the exercise was to offer mutually exclusive reasons for the mistake. Yes, I made a mistake. I used the wrong homophone.

But at least enjoy my response to the mistake as a whole. That’s the principal point I’m trying to make.

It happened when I was born. I was born a leader, and people followed me. Girls throw themselves at me and I don’t have to try, but I have the Alpha Maleness that others just want to be part of. Twitter? I was the first user. Starbucks? I once mentioned it was good coffee, look at them now. Apple? Once I said, hey this company is sort of cool. Lehman Brothers? I said laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame before their stock tanked and took almost the whole economy down.

Now you might be tempted to throw yourself at me and follow me, starry-eyed, everywhere I go. but you have to ask yourself, am I ready to go out with an Alpha Male?

Last year Pop was late on recognizing George Hills talents (or maybe just too stuborn to play a rook) and I think he might be late again on Ian.

Next year Ian’s gonna be a starter and Pops "favorite"player, lol. Thats Pops way of saying sorry :)

The Georgie example you cite I think might apply to Hairston’s case a bit in this instance. But Yawn is beyond saving as far as the Spurs are concerned, am pretty sure. Yawn barely made an impression on me yesterday while Hairston’s play managed to break through my haze of moodiness about our team.

Hairdog was keeping up with Martin in bothering his shot and drives(not sure if Martin’s fatigue was a factor there?). Yawn, to be honest, looked stupid. The guy shows no bball craftiness or acumen for any one facet of the game.

Blair, on the other hand, got owned by Scola simply through veteran or european craftiness in selling imaginary wrongs. Otherwise I think Blair did quite well. Another is, I see Hill very hesitant to pass to Blair if he is not deep in the block. Same with Mason. I would be hesitant too. But the kid has shown he can surprise. He threw in a surprising controlled good looking hook shot yesterday over Scola or somebody. Best thing is, one can see Blair is learning on the fly and not letting Scola’s antics get to me. That is super amazing composure for a rookie.

by LionZion on Feb 27, 2010 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

I just have a hard time believing another wing in the rotation is what we need. I do like Hairdog though.

Also the same way Blair is learning on the fly I think Ian could benifit from the same. If we were making strides this season, peaking at the right time and all that, then I’d see cause for keeping Ian benched/innactive. At this point though it’s a low risk high reward.

by Manuwar on Feb 27, 2010 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

It isn’t another wing that we need, just a better, more consistent wing than either Bogans or Finley have been. Hairston showed he might be that player. If he can show that energy and ability for 5 or 6 games with extended minutes, we’d know. Not sure it will happen though.

by Spurlady on Feb 27, 2010 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

Thing is, Yawn has been part of the ‘system’ for what – four years now? I don’t see him comfy in the offense out there or D, or bringing something more for that matter.

by LionZion on Feb 27, 2010 11:55 PM CST up reply actions

Anything more? What about his size and athleticism? And in his years he’s never seen regular action. Once guys get comfortable they make leaps and bounds. I think he’s looked fine on offense, especially in the pick and roll.

I’m not saying he should start or even be the first big off the bench. There are 96 minutes available at the 4 and 5 spots combined. What I’d like to see is, give or take a few minutes:

Duncan- 33 mpg
McDyess- 25 mpg
Blair- 25 mpg
Mahinmi- 10 mpg

And that leaves Pop around 3 minutes per game of small ball since I know he can’t quit cold turkey :)

He was abused by Scola

Most bigs don’t have Scola’s slick moves, actually none that I can even think of since Hakeem. I’m not saying Scola is on The Dreams level, just with the up fakes and slipping under, you don’t see that much. Especially not among the west contenders’ bigs.

And Ian playing 10-12 minutes a game would mean less small ball which is what needs to happen.

Pop uses the same defensive system that he employed when always starting another 7 footer along side Timmy. If Pop doesn’t think the bigs we have available are capable enough to be effective for our defensive scheme then fine. But don’t run the same scheme that is relient upon having two shot blockers in the middle.

Either play more bigs so that the scheme can be fully effective or if you must play small ball (for whatever reasons) change your defense.

Lastly, I didn’t want to admit this but since you blew my cover, yes I like Ian’s Frenchness :/

I know he’s a FA, I was just yoking about Pop’s going from not playing a guy to the player being his favorite.

I hope we do resign Ian though for a few reasons. I think he’ll be cheap and if the system is so tough to learn then he should be primed for a break through.

by LionZion on Feb 27, 2010 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Eh, I’m still not convinced. When he entered in the 1st, within a span of a minute he had the most egregious travel I’ve ever seen, gave up a silly foul, and then got bullied by Scola on a rebound that resulted in a put back.

Let’s hope we see more of Hariston and less of Finley for sure though.

by Neuwaldegg on Feb 27, 2010 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

That rebound was Blairs fault if anyone. It was on a free throw and Blair didn’t seal Scola on the box out which allowed Scola to get all the way over to the other side of the rim. But I see what you’re saying.

RJ needs to play off the bench, he seems to do better that way when he’s the primary option off the bench.

Manu also needs to play off the bench, it’s his preference to do so.

And no Finley? At least put him on there so we have some kind of bench.

Hill MUST start

Manu needs to start, we can’t keep getting in these early deficits and slow starts. You cant run the offense through Duncan no more, he is no longer dominant. You need to Manu to run the offense. We are now only winning games that Manu goes supernova, and they are close.

Hill can run the second unit, and he will have more freedom on offense.

by spursfan87 on Feb 27, 2010 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

I think we’re getting into early deficits because TP’s not playing/playing hurt. We used to dominate the first half only to run out of gas towards the end. I somewhat agree with not running the offense through Duncan. He no longer draws the double team as much as before and is settling for jumpers instead of posting up. But I don’t know if he’s still reserving those banging for the playoffs. The team can still use some plays centering on him though ’cause his still a very good passer.

Hairston. By a mile.

But I’d be happy just for him to get consistent minutes ‘cause RJ needs to start or he’ll whine and everything. Like take away Bogans, Bonner, Finley. Then give them to Mason and Hairston.

I don’t know about Dice though. He’s performing even worse than RJ.

Is it ok if ppl talk smack?

by Heman on Feb 27, 2010 3:37 AM CST up reply actions

Here are the guidelines.

Wanna talk smack? Go for it. If you go too far, a couple of people will reply to your comment with suggestions. Ignore those and you’ll probably get an official warning that’ll pop up the next time you sign in to the site. Ignore that and you’ll probably receive an email explaining our views of how you’ve been posting. Ignore that for a while and we’ll put you in time out for a couple of weeks. Come back from that with the same weak sauce and then you’ll get banned.

It’s not easy to get there unless you’re just determined to be a jake about the whole thing.

Bottom line is, if you’re asking, you’re probably not a candidate for being banned. Cool?

by Heman on Feb 27, 2010 3:38 AM CST reply actions

Our starting lineup killed us

I think Pop would be wise at this point to start playing Ian and Hariston regularly each about 15-18 minutes a game. They both bring the 2 things to the team that we sorely need. Speed and energy. Sure they are going to make mistakes but the only way they can learn is by doing at this point. It would be much better than watching Bonner and Finley sleep walk around out there.

And I don’t care for Jason Kidd much either.

by finn ball on Feb 27, 2010 3:51 AM CST reply actions

I agree with everything that you have said except the Jason Kidd thing. I thought he showed his ultra competitiveness in shoving Woodson while he was on the court, sure, it’s not sexy, but it’s about winning games and gaining every extra point you can. What I hate is that the Mavs fans probably love what he did but still consider flopping a low blow when our resident saint (Manu) does it. I kinda wish that Kidd didn’t do it so that they would still think that flopping is a heinous crime.

I really really do not live that Mavs.

I think Jefferson should start and give him the ball earlier in transition because that’s the way he make for most of his points so he can build a comfort zone an build on it, Bogans is very inconsistent and finley is old and he should only be a straight up shooter. Malik has talent and a lot of potential so Pop should give him a chance and steady minutes over finley and Bogans
