Poll: Spurs' Biggest Offseason Need

Since we've lost sight of the yellow brick road this season, it's time to start piecing together an article on the Spurs' options in the offseason.  Before doing that, I'd like to know if there's any consensus on what the team is going to need most.  Because it is definitely not too early to ask.  The poll is about positions, but feel free to share any more specific ideas you have(i.e. "defense-minded SF") in the comments.

More details after the jump.

Star-divide

Expiring contracts:

Manu Ginobili
Roger Mason
Matt Bonner
Michael Finley
Ian Mahinmi
Keith Bogans

Roster already in place:

Tim Duncan
Tony Parker
Antonio McDyess
George Hill
DeJuan Blair
Malik Hairston [team option]
Richard Jefferson [player option]

Jefferson would have to be an idiot(or very committed to the Spurs) to turn down his player option, so don't expect that roster spot to be empty.  And Hairston is likely to stay with the team, unless he regresses.  So, there you have it.  Discuss to your heart's content.

I voted C but I think we need tall players for the F and C positions. Unfortunately those are hard to come by.

This ones easy. Center or power forward. The Spurs should go hard after Bosh. Hes from Texas, and at this point in his career , Duncan would probably defer to Bosh and make it an easy transition for him.

Then again, the Spurs would probably have to give up one of the big three in order to have a $hot at Bosh. But lets keep in mind a Bosh is very very hard to come by. Hes a young talented big.

Tiago! Yes, I am aware that his NBA game is unproven, but it is pretty difficult to get someone like Bosh. Also, this organization has shown they are better at developing young talent to fit into the Spurs system then they are at taking existing stars and fitting them in. Ok, I am extrapolating from a small sample, but that is how I feel.

I agree that the Spurs have to get back to making personnel decisions that emphasize defense. The older our big 3 get, the worse their D is going to suck. We have to get it from somewhere.

I know it would likely put you off your dinner but it is late in Tx. But Carlos Boozer is going to be a free agent. He doesn’t seem like a typical Spur though.

Its going to a difficult offseason.

If we resign Manu that only leaves the basically the the MLE to add a decent player. If we cant lure Tiago to come here, I say lets go after J.Oneal with the MLE.

I would also try to trade RJ expiring contract for 2 or 3 players

Actually, the team will be over the cap whether it resigns Manu or not, so only the MLE, BAE, and vet minimum contracts will be available. Except for the players we have Bird Rights to(Manu, Bonner).

In addition I found this interesting bit on Hill’s contract at Shamsports:

George Hill: Drafted 26th overall in 2008. Signed to rookie salary scale contract for that year. Signed for 120% of the rookie scale in the first two years, then 80% in year three. And since year 4 on scale contracts is calculated as being a percentage increase on year 3, then that year was at a reduced rate too. However, since 80% of Hill’s scale salary is actually less than the minimum salary in year 3, the minimum salary is used instead, and the percentage increases for year 4 and the QO are adjusted accordingly. Confusing and novel indeed.

Maybe the FO should start showing x-rays around the league showing that RJ’s ACLs are made of a novel hybrid nanocomposite that is about to transform him in the best leaper in the league within a couple of months. It will also (amazingly) somehow help him make a shot. Maybe then we can unload him onto some excited GM.

The sucky part is the RJ would probably do pretty well with a fresh start on a different team. I have been in bad situations before and it is tough to mentally break out of a funk, but a fresh start made all the difference.
Hopefully some GM somewhere recognizes that and doesn’t mind overpaying just a wee bit for him.

by swgeek on Feb 22, 2010 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

Well, first off, Pop is Buford’s boss, not the other way around. Pop is executive vice president of basketball operations, so he’d pretty much have to fire himself from coaching duties. I think it would be a good idea to have an assistant start coaching some games every now and then before too long, just to see what kind of horses we have in the stable.

So it all depends on if they are promoting from within or going to go outside the organization. Hard to imagine they wouldn’t give the assistants first look and then maybe Avery? I’m not saying that’s what is best, just what seems to be the most logical.

I picked a C but we do need to shore up in several positions in things continue like they have this season. There are 2 awful big holes in our rotation: a defensive big man and another defensive big wing. We can’t keep playing guards as PF, specially with a 6’7 center. Think about it, we play lineups like this a lot (and no, its not all Pop’s blame, he has little choice):
6’2
6’4
6’5
6’7
6’7

against teams playing a 6’7 shooting guard and 6’9 small forward.

Our choices:

For C, hope for Tiago to pan out.
For SF, there is no way out except free agency or a trade. The first would be hard depending on who do we resign and the second depending on who plays well the rest of the season.

It’s crazy to realize that half the team is expiring. Weighing the probabilities:
Manu Ginobili – I expect/hope/pray he returns. We all know part of us will die if/when he finally leaves/retires from the team.

Roger Mason – Most likely gone.

Matt Bonner – Hard to say. Let’s say gone. I’ll miss the Hoagie Hammer. If only he could make use of his 6’10" frame and defend.

Michael Finley – likely retiring, but you know Pop’s man love for him will keep him here against all odds.

Ian Mahinmi – Maybe Pop hasn’t been playing Mahinmi to keep his value low so we could keep him at basically the same price? I want to believe that there has been something resembling logical thought for Pop to keep him chained to the sidelines.

Keith Bogans – Who knows, who cares (sad but true). If he re-signs for the same money, but half the PT (i.e. no starts), I’d be okay with that.

Behind a defense-first 7’ C (these guys can hide in this league, however) and a DF SF, I think we could use a back-up PG as well. He would have to be a distributor and could play with RJ off the bench. I think that would work really well.

I ask because even though Nocioni’s contract is horrible it would be interesting if we could trade for a package of Hawes and Nocioni this off-season. Hawes can help us at the center position and Nocioni can help us retain Manu (maybe?). Just thinking out loud here. The only problem is that we only have Dyess to send over which is not enough.
Nocioni himself cannot dribble or defend very well but he can be physical and annoying. He is a good spot up shooter and could come from the bench behind RJ.
The Kings might want to do this to get rid of Nocionis contract and if the deal is done smartly they could clear enough cap room to make an offer to one of the top free agents this off-season.

If the Spurs are to continue to be a defense-first team

1- or, I should say, resume being that team, they need to decide who they are up front. Blair should work on a short jumper like Big Baby Davis to expand his game. Start Timmy with either Splitter or Mahinmi and rotate Blair and McDyess. Forget the small ball. Not going after Tyrus Thomas stronger was a huge mistake.

2- Find a real back-up point or draft one and let him play like a Collison in NO or Holliday in Philly. Seriously think about trying to buy an extra pick in the draft.

3- Replace Bogans, Finley, Mason, etc. with a small forward that has length using the MLE. Trade Jefferson as soon as possible or commit to play him good or bad. Establish a rotation and stick to it.
