Roger Mason Issues Trade Request

I just saw this on 48 Minutes of Hell. Caught me a little off guard because I heard Mason was openly saying that he wanted to stay in San Antonio. Looks like there will be a trade before the deadline.

http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/02/15/report-mason-requests-trade/

Here is Adrian Wojnarowski's tweet...

Spurs working to help accommodate Roger Mason with a trade, agent Mark Bartelstein tells Y! Minutes down, wants to play. Spurs cool with it.

I think we're gonna go after Tyrus Thomas.

[added by Wayne]

There is THIS from mysa.com where the agent says it isn't a trade demand.  Just a request.  Interesting read.

If we packaged Mase and other for Tyrus and Salmons, I’d be ok with it. Rumors have Tyrus to Minnesota lately. We’ll know soon enough, I guess.

This isnt good.

Mason has been on lately after a dismal start to the season. He is the teams most clutch shooter and best three point shooter. Hes also cheap at 3.7 million. Im a little worried we wont get something that good in return.

He is one of the team’s best shooters and actually was a good player, not just scorer, off the bench. You know as good as Fin’s career was with the Spurs, he’s been stealing minutes from better players all season. Its really unfortunate this happened.

Spurs had a good thing with the Ginobili, Jefferson, Bogans, Hill, Mason swingman rotation. Ever since Finley returned he’s been in the rotation, not producing. It was crowded to begin with, having old man Fin out there didn’t help anyone. Its not entirely on the old man’s fault, but I don’t think he should have been out there.

I don’t blame Mase at all. Last year he was a major contributor to a 50 win team and this year his role is reduced yet the team is struggling.

It’d be one thing if his playing time was limited because we brought in guys better than him but he sees RJ lost and confused getting regular minutes along with Bogans whos offensive game makes Bruce blush.

Gotta love how civil this whole trade request is though compared to usual ugly demands by pro athletes when they aren’t happy. Only in Spurville.

I would love to see more minutes for Mason, especially if they’re coming from Bogans or Finley. Mason doesn’t always make the best decisions on offense but at least he has a pulse.

As for the trade ‘request’ – I imagine the Spurs will include him in whatever big trade they get in before the deadline closes. If they don’t put together a bunch of contracts for a big player, though, don’t expect him to get traded just because. It’s gotta be obvious to pop, just like it’s obvious to us, that he’s the best of those three options, even considering he’s the least equipped to defend SFs and big guards.

What is going on in the front office?

All we need to do is shore up the front court, why are we dangling Mase in trade rumors. I would rather see Bogans, Finley, or Manu get traded in that order before Mase is traded.

There is something really wrong here if Mase is traded before any of those other guards.

by SinCitySpur on Feb 16, 2010 12:58 AM CST up reply actions

We should have been fired Pop but that’s another thead. : )

If we are going to lose a guard as good as Mase, why not trade Manu instead, he is the FA, and we lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

I don’t wanna trade Mase or Manu, but if I had to pick, it would be Manu before Mase.

Manu only has about 4 more months as a Spur. Why lose Mase too???

by GhosTown on Feb 16, 2010 1:26 AM CST up reply actions

You do know that Mase is also in a contract year, and the Spurs don’t have his bird rights, like the do with Manu, right? If you’re picking one of the two to trade, it has to be Mase… it’s Mase every time.

by J.R. Wilco on Feb 16, 2010 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

Bell and I were talking about this awhile back. The big question you have to ask yourself as a SPURS fan is… Is it worth anything to get us another ring? Is there no loyalty to a player that was instrumental in bringing us to our current state of dynasty? Does a level of service produced by one of (or just Manu) the Big 3 demand in any way that there is loyalty and character to allowing them to finish their career(s) in San Antonio? Is the desire for another ring greater than the honor/respect involved keeping a mainstay of the team?

I think that if winning is your objective, at ANY cost, you consider a Manu/Tony trade (Timmy is NEVER on the table in my book). But if class and honor and respect and loyalty are paramount, you don’t even entertain the trade notion and allow time to ride itself out.

Just a thought.

And it’s a good thought.

I’ve always believed that the organization is greater than any one player. Except in those very rare occasions of Jordan, Duncan, Kobe…etc. There is always a point of diminishing returns and a proactive approach to prolong success is to make the necessary tough (and often unpopular) decisions. The objective in my book was never to win at ANY cost. That’s an unfair assessment. I believe the main objective was, and still is, to get Timmy his 5th ring. When I made my case to trade Manu last April, it wasn’t at a win at ANY cost mindset. It was obvious then what was happening to Manu. It is even more obvious now. I made the case for what’s best for the team as a whole moving forward.

Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.

by CMoney on Feb 16, 2010 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

I get it, but you’re clearly in the camp that believes that the greatest priority is to win, regardless of what that entails. Many others are in the camp that believe that honor and respect ought to be shown to a player who has contributed so much to our success and is so valuable to the overall entity. And that honor and respect is best shown by valuing an entire career and allowing him to retire a SPUR, not just honoring moments of greatness and then discarding/moving on when his tank is empty.

I’m not taking sides… yet… but I think this is what it boils down to.

Tim, Manu & Tony are untouchable in my book. You do not trade the 3 winningest Spurs in the history of the organization. In the end, I care more about the loyalty and character of our big three. Until they do something to make me regret my loyalty, my loyalty is to them.

Agreed, but some people have equated “not signing Manu to an extension last year” with the “trade Manu now” camp. I still think the FO will make an effort to resign Manu before letting him go to another team, but if some crazy GM makes an insane offer, then it’s out of their hands. I’m hoping this doesn’t happen.

by CapHill on Feb 16, 2010 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

Cap, since it’s you I will tell you exactly how the Manu thing will go.

  1. The ONLY way they trade him (or Tony) is if there is a “blockbuster” trade for a player who sets up the Spurs for several years going forward (Bosh, Wade, Durant, something big. . .)
  2. At the end of the year they will end up making him an offer for a new contract. Given the current economic climate it will be a low offer in money and/or years that will be hard for Manu to accept.
  3. If they don’t think he has much left then they will offer a very low contract so that they can tell the season ticket holders “We offered what we could without jeopardizing our future but he walked away”. That keeps them from being the bad guys.
  4. Oh yeah, the only other way they trade Manu or Tony is if they request a trade which would surprise me.

The Lakers "Too big, too strong, too long, too good."

If you could get Durant for Manu under scenario #1, you have to do that. Not that this would happen, unless Presti suddenly becomes brain dead.

And yes, it wouldn’t surprise me if the FO gives Manu a low offer. Unfortunately, that is the current economic climate.

by CapHill on Feb 16, 2010 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah my point was mainly that the ONLY way Manu gets traded is for something that is future oriented and just too good to pass up.

If Manu does leave next year it will be turning down their offer so that they can tell Spurs fans “Well we tried. . .”.

Manu will only be a Spur for a few more months. Then what???

Give him a max contract and let him retire a Spur? That is a ton of money to invest on Manu.

We better start thinking past May because if we don’t make the right decision in regards to Manu, this team will have a tough time in the future.

Even with Scola and Oberto, the front office has already made the wrong decisions with every Argentine player we’ve had.

I don’t think we can afford another bad call. I would not risk any more money on Manu he is too streaky. The way things are going this year, smart money says it is time to rebuild around TP, and get TD some help. Just like we did with David Robinson in his last few years.

This Mr. Ghost is a good example of why Lauri said its difficult to take you seriously. And easier to tune you out.

Not because you are saying trade Manu. But the illogical fantasy world you seem to be coming from. There are too many things to explain to you about why what you said above and the implicit assumptions that go along with it are just from another dimension.

So I will just leave you with Sima’s totally un-sarcastic reply below.

by LionZion on Feb 16, 2010 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

First of all, it’s GhosTown. Mr Ghost is my dad. :)

Secondly, Lauri has a very sentimental approach when it comes to the Spurs.

Any talk of losing or replacing one of our icons causes many of you to tune out the inevitable, sacrifices will be needed to compete for a championship.

As we can see from the 50 games played, Manu is no more important than Bowen was to our championship caliber team and we traded him when he looked a step slower didn’t we?

Without Bowen we are fighting just to get into the playoffs. Imagine if the roles were reverse and we kept Bowen this year. I doubt we would be one game out of last place.

My point is Manu can be traded and we get something, or we can let him walk for nothing. There are no assumptions, if he was worth the big bucks then why no extension? I think we know the answer to that.

I don’t think Manu is going to be in the Spurs future.

I am saying we made a mistake with Scola and Oberto. We should have kept them. Now we are going to bankrupt the team trying to keep the one that we should trade this year. No, I don’t think they are going to trade or bankrupt the team in regards to Manu. I think he will walk for nothing. It will be the 3rd mistake with Argentine players.

I know it appears like Manu is rounding into form, but Manu’s stat line suggests he is playing worse this year, than he did last year when he was hurt. He always look like he is hustling and playing hard that’s because Manu gets it. He keeps playing defense even when his offense is not there.

The front office offering Manu money just so we look good and then he walks anyway is not smart business. We get nothing in return.

Manu and his agent are not fools and they are not going to leave money on the table. Someone will offer him more than he is worth and we learned that from Arenas. I don’t think Manu’s agent helped him during the Olympics, he should have advised Manu against playing hurt. Manu is a basketball player, he loves the game, but someone should have sat him down and explain to him the ramifications of playing in the Olympics. To me, that showed up the FO and that is why they didn’t give him an extension in the 1st place.

So if they are already willing to lose him, it just doesn’t make sense not to trade him now and get TP and TD some help. The future of this team is TP and TD. We sacrificed Sean Elliot for the team’s future, now it is Manu’s turn.

Come Thursday if he is still a Spur these last few months will be his last.

Yeah it’s going to be a tough goodbye, but Bellasa, I hate to break this too you, but Manu will not be a Spur next season, it’s just the way the business goes.

He knows it and the Front Office does too or they would have given him an extension already.

I hate to be the voice of sobriety, but if the trade is warranted then please….trade him. He was a factor before, but in his limited minutes, he is no longer a key player. If we have an opportunity to gain something from him, then by all means….please to do it. i like roger, but get where he’s coming from. i would expect that any trade would be more of the minor variety. but this brings me to a personal dilemma – that maybe PtR can help me resolve (may god have mercy on my soul).

the spurs start the post-break part of their seaosn at indiana. i go to this game every year as its about 100 miles from me. however, i am also a season ticket holder for my college alma mater, which is also about 100 miles away. both are playing on this night – and that’s not normally a problem. i see the alma mater 12+ times a year so no big deal casting them aside for the spurs, who i see 3-4 times in a great year.

the rub this year is that the alma mater just jumped into the top 10 and they are hosting another top 10 team wednesday. its going to be the biggest home game of the season easily.

the bad news for me is that i unloaded my ticket some months ago in anticipation of going to see the spurs. i dont hold tickets to either game at this point, so it will be scalper city for me either way – and the pacers will be the easier ticket for sure.

i dont mind saying that i am leaning toward the college game here, but i have some fear about impening trades in the back of my mind. for instance, my last opportunity to see (insert name of player who had better not be traded here) would definitely sway my decision.

the other factor is that i am making the trip to SA in late march to see at least 2 home games, so its not like i would miss (player who had better not be traded here) assuming he is sitll on the squad.

advice from yoyu PtRers on this one?

College game. Honor the harder working team?

The Spurs and the leaders on the team are still figuring things out. From here on out, it is on Pop and Timmeh, Tony, Manu. Whatever fire and resolve they show in crunch time execution without looking unsure or flustered or for that matter, too darn old.

thanks for the feedback you guys. i kind if knew that this was the way to go all along, but am just now admitting it to myself.

for the record, i went to ohio state and its turning into a quite a season for us – and cap is all over it knowing that we play purdue.

i have skipped the bucks for the spurs at almost every opportunity over the years when they come around here….and i missed big home game just last year to make the texas trip, so i will honor the better performing team again tomorrow. i guess i’m just used to that team being the spurs.

this means i wont be on the thread tomorrow…but i will be DVRing the game and watching it late night, so dont spoil the outcome for me…..

Wait a minute…

Roger Mason was quoted just 2 to 3 days ago, via San Antonio Express-News, saying:

"I want to be in San Antonio for my career," Mason said. "I want to win a championship here. That would be the ultimate."

"If something happens, it happens," Mason said. "You can’t really worry about it or control it. I can only control what I can, and that’s to help this team win."

So, what I seem to decipher out of this is that he’s lobbying for more playing time on this Spurs squad. Why would he contradict himself and ask for a trade? I think he did this just to see where he stands with the organization, to find out how much the Spurs really want him and how many minutes they are willing to give him. That’s all. By asking for a trade, he might be able to actually get more PT with the Spurs because when he’s hitting his shots, the Spurs win, and we need him to play like he did against the Nuggets last week. I mean, didn’t Mason actually START against the Nuggets?

I mean, if this isn’t Mason’s strategy, it doesn’t really make too much sense.

Mason Trade?

I’d be very surprised to see a trade actually happen. It would have to be a one-for-one swap and I’m not so sure there are teams that would give up what SA needs, ie: Tyrus Thomas, for Mason. I really think Pop actually believes that he can still make a run with the roster he has. Has he lost touch with reality? We need Mason just in case Manu goes down again like he did last year. Finley couldn’t fill the spot and Hill is needed as a backup for Tony. Bogans is a good bench player, but not anybody’s starter. If there were a possibility of trading Jefferson I would go for it, but nobody is likely to take that salary for what he brings. It was a bad acquisition from the very beginning. Jefferson prospers in a run and gun game like Phoenix or maybe the future Knicks, but not with the Spurs halfcourt game. The Spurs would like to run more, but with the people we have it won’t happen enough. The Spurs at best will finish sixth in the West and could drop lower. You can’t play small ball against the likes of LAL, Portland, Dallas or for that matter even Phoenix.

all of this sounds so bad when you say it THAT way

by bones on Feb 16, 2010 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

It does sound bad, but I think if we get Pop out of the way and start making basketball decisions with our players we can still compete for a championship.

Pop worries too much about is this guy a vet or not.

Blair and TP (as a rookie) should have shown him that age is nothing but a number.

We are one trade away from going from next to last back to the top of the West. But somehow either Pop or the front office is too afraid to pull the trigger.

TY Thomas is a 1st round draft pick, it is not everyday you get a shot to get that kind of talent to fill a spot where we are clearly weak. We need to be begging the Bulls for this trade.

Yeah Pop.

Who do you think is stopping Blair and Ian from averaging double doubles. RC?

Where is Haislip? Where is Ian?

Young talent that is not getting used.

Which is why I think we are hesitant to pull the trigger on TY.

Answer this. Other than TD, TP, and Manu, who on our team is better than TY Thomas??? So why are we not jumping at a chance to get a 1st rounder, who would be the 2nd best player in our front court?

Don’t even remind me. TP was horrible in the clutch all the way till almost 2005. I can’t remember what he did even then to be honest, other than the road runner act of course. But crunch time TP has been few and far between.

TP carried us last year. Give him some respect dammit. : )

No seriously, if it wasn’t for TP we would have been swept out of the 1st round last year.

I think TP earned the right to shoot whenever he wants to.

At one time, Pop wanted to trade TP for Kidd. Yeah, imagine where we would be if that happened.

Darko or Kwame shouldn’t even be mentioned as NBA players, better yet Spurs. They were unproven players that should have NEVER been selected in the draft. People saw what TY could do at LSU, it was a no brainer that he would be a defensive player on the next level.

Are you saying that TY is a bust?
I hope not, TY is no bust. He is a defensive player that we desperately need to compensate for our smallness. It doesn’t have to be TY but we better get somebody by Thursday that can defend the paint against teams like Denver, LA, Dallas and Utah because there is no one on our current roster that can do it. Check our record against them.

by silverandblack_davis on Feb 17, 2010 12:20 AM CST reply actions

If not TY then who???

Who doesn’t suck in your opinion that can help us and is on the trade block?

Or do you think we can win with the current roster?

by GhosTown on Feb 17, 2010 12:24 AM CST up reply actions

I wanted Marcus Camby, but there he goes to Portland. Maybe Haywood could’ve helped too, but the Mavs got there before us.

Ty Thomas has been playing for four years and he still hasn’t put it together. What gives us any assurance that he’ll get it with the Spurs, who run a more complicated system? Trading for Thomas is a desperate move. And we all know what happened when we first fell in love with a similar athletic guy who now occupies the small forward spot in this team.

by silverandblack_davis on Feb 17, 2010 3:06 AM CST up reply actions

Camby would have worked. Haywood even better.

At this point, I think we are desperate. And from the reports that are coming out, RC appears to be very concerned. I think if teams saw TY guarding the paint they would not try him. Which would help our perimeter defense too. He is a natural shot blocker with a decent jumper so we don’t pay a huge toll on the other end with him on the floor.

The difference between TY and RJ, TY is a true defender. RJ was is being converted to play defense.

by GhosTown on Feb 17, 2010 3:28 AM CST up reply actions

The problem seems to be that the Spurs cant get anyone without losing a good chunk of the 3 point shooting corps ( a weapon San Antonio relies on ) and or Manu.

We are just shitfucked with Rages contract…

You are right about Capt Jack. We should have jumped at the opportunity to get him when he was leaving GS, I wonder what happened why we passed on him? Pride maybe???

I think we need RJ’s size at SF to compete in the West. I really don’t think he is the problem on defense. Unless we get another SF that can defend Melo or Artest or Dirk we are going to have a problem with these matchups.

I think our primary problem is we are giving up too many points in the paint. What SF in the ENTIRE NBA could stop all the points we are surrendering in paint?

The Lakers really exposed our weakness. Just attack us inside and you have a dam good chance of beating us. We are too old, to short and too slow reacting in the paint. RJ is not the problem on defense. He hurts the offense somewhat, but better defense can help him in this regard. If we were tougher on defense we could use our defense to score. This would allow RJ to do his thing in the open court. We have to get stops, as long as we keep getting the ball out of the nets, RJ will not blossom. He is a volume shooter on a team that values every possesion, not a good match offensively.

by GhosTown on Feb 17, 2010 3:01 AM CST up reply actions

i would rather trade fin/bonner for ty thomas…i would rather have mase on our team,if he wants a ring this year, then if i was him i would sign with another team with a ring, but really i would prefer him to be a spur, plus if there’s no more fin then mase could have some of his time…
