DTOUR: It's Tuesday
Another Tuesday, another DTOUR. Is this Tuesday any more special than any other Tuesday? No, except that we haven't had a DTOUR thread in a while, so now today is more special. On to Today's Theme:
Human Victory Cigar (hyoo'-muhn vik'-tuh-ree si'-gahr) noun. The 12th man on a basketball team, usually exiled to the end of the bench until the team is involved in a major blowout and there are only a few minutes left in the game.
If the latest Game Thread is any indication, there is some confusion amongst the PtR Collective. So who is the current HVC on the Spurs roster?
As always, discuss/share anything you want here. Grab your coffee!

So, I was reading GSOM earlier, and discovered that both Udoh and Amundson are expected to be healthy and play “sometime this week”. The Dubs are in Dallas tonight, and in SA tomorrow. I’m really curious to see what the Dubs look like at full strength.

Fatality might be the HVC when &erson heals and plays himself back into the rotation. But until then, I gotta go with Quinn.

Definitely Quinn.
OT (ah, who am I kidding- it’s a DTOUR): Has anybody else here seen 127 Hours? It’s pretty amazing. Not nearly as graphic as I expected, but definitely powerful.
And a total of 3 fouls in 21 minutes, with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 blocked shot and no turnovers in a 105-100 victory. Ian clearly had a better game than starter Haywood, who in nearly 18 minutes had 4 points, 6 rebounds, 0 steals, 3 blocked shots and 3 turnovers.
Four of Golden State’s starters played over 40 minutes, the exception being Biedrens with 31 minutes. They might be a bit tired when they play the Spurs tomorrow night, though they are a young team.
meh, he’s playing well with Dallas, he never had a real chance with the Spurs

Don’t look now, but the Mavs are hot on the Spurs’ heels, winners of their last 10 games.

Thus denying Coach Karl his 1K milestone for at least one more game.

Speaking of the 1000-win club, Coach Karl apparently mentioned that he thought that Pop might be the only other coach to join that elite club within his lifetime. Coach Pop is at 753 (?) victories… do y’all think he’ll reach a thousand?
Part of me hopes that he will. But as much as winning motivates Pop (or rather, coaching/teaching players how to win), I don’t feel that he would chase an arbitrary numerical record for its own sake, so I could easily imagine him choosing to retire with 980+ victories. And if he decides to hang up his whistle and ride off into the sunset with TD after a lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign, he may not even have 900 notches in his belt.

This may qualify for PtR Understatement of the Week, freshtuna. Even if you don’t win, you’re at least in the running. And you know, from watching the Oscars, that it’s an honor just to be nominated.

While Quinn comes closest, I’m thinking that his role will increase with time so that he’ll be used in certain sets of circumstances beyond garbage time. If they just wanted a player to fill a roster spot and no plans beyond using him in garbage time; why sign Quinn and then release Simmons, Temple and Gee? I expect his role is mainly ball control due to his above average assist/turnover ratio, and think as he becomes more familiar with the system he’ll start seeing more first half minutes.
Quinn is a terrible ball player don’t say that.
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."
In his total of 49 minutes he has 12 points, 9 assists and zero turnovers. While that’s rather limited statistics occurring mainly during garbage time, his career totals are 413 assists vs 119 turnovers with 26 games started. I don’t think any of the other guards has a ratio at all close to that. One of the Spurs biggest problems is often turnovers, and it seems they often get sloppy when there is a lead to protect. I would expect that in situations like that Quinn might start seeing some playing time in order to stabilize things and protect a lead.
Alamo, that’s a truly excellent point.
When the conversation turns to the last guy off the bench (the HVC, if you will) you’re talking about a niche player, and you can consider nothing but a single trait; signing a player for just one quality he has.
That said, it’s very possible that the only thing Pop and the FO (PATFO) care about with an HVC is that he has a high assist to turnover ratio. When your team has a huge lead, the other team is no longer the opponent. The clock is. As long as you keep the ball for a full possession every time, the chances of blowing the lead are slim. That would explain the loss of Jerrells, Temple and all the rest. Like I said, this is a really good point.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t explain the signing of Udoka.

That’s my guess as well. They wanted someone to play about 6 mpg at SF until Anderson is back so that they didn’t have to use Manu, and felt more confident about what they would get from Ime than they did about Green.
I’m not sure who they figure to put on the inactive list once Anderson does return. They could use it from time to time on either Tim or McDyess to give them some rest, but I’d think they’ll normally be suited up even when they’re getting some rest. I expect it may depend upon what Quinn and Ime do before then, and if they even keep Ime. I would think they stand pat with their roster, but I’d like them to have a 6’9" or taller forward that moves like a SF.
That said, it’s very possible that the only thing Pop and the FO (PATFO) care about with an HVC is that he has a high assist to turnover ratio.

Picked up a crap load of toilet paper there yesterday evening; always a good buy.

transgo, that’s awesome. I had no idea that such a place existed.
In fact, I love this so much that I declare that from now on, this is the way I’ll be referring to Pop, RC and the rest of the front office.

I actually have a new batch of terms for the Lexicon that I’ve been putting together for a while, and researching one of them led me to the very thread bella refers to a couple of comments above. It was a playoff game and it was actually, the beginning of a dark time for the Spurs.
If that’s not enough of a hint for you, then watch out this Tuesday for the Lexicon Update post and the revelation of the date of the Ate Oh Sicks Fahve Event.

It actually happened more than once with that particulat individual. In particular, I remember a regular-season (08-09) game thread that basically went the same way.

Guys. Since this is the DTOUR, if you’re not scared of boring HTML layouts and a complete lack of vivid colors, please check this out and tell me what you think. I need ideas.
I smell death... everywhere.
It looks very bland as a web page though I don’t believe thats a negative these days to be honest.
Are you talking regarding the context or just the visual?
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."
Nah, not aesthetically. I mean, I know that has to change. That’s the easy part. I mean… conceptually. Content, involvement of the readers, whatever. Anything. Functionality… anything, really.
I smell death... everywhere.
Well written as usual, LD! My question is why would anybody want more than a Cheers/ Spurs blog? (great comparisons btw;)
Honestly. You kids today, with your hippity-hop music and your Twiddle. - Lauri
Well, Wayne wants to keep on blogging. Community wise, I think PTR is pretty much perfect. :)
I smell death... everywhere.
I agree wtih Bushka in that the page itself needs something more visually—not a lot but something—a picture or graphic.
Gosh, content is tough. As you mentioned in the post, it is going to be hard to find a niche. I come to PTR first for my Spurs info and for the community on the site, I’ll check Project Spurs occasionally because they’re frequently first with new info (i.e. trades, releases etc.) and occasionally 48MOH for their in depth analysis.
I enjoy reading what both you and Wayne write so I’ll definitely come and visit, but honestly, I’m not sure another site is needed.
Just continue to be who you are… you’ll be fine.
