I think a lot of the better teams will be playing each other later in the season. It would be interesting, to say the least.
True, but I think the league intentionally saved those games for TV. I’m more surprised that we’re nearly done with one division team and yet to have a game with another. Ah well, scheduling fluke.

We sucked against some top teams (0-7 combined Jazz & Blazers) and early against Celtics and Nuggets. I recall many of those being TV games. This year? Hmm. I’d have to count NBATV games since it’s not yet to the time of year where we have ABC games and we’ve yet to be on TNT Thursday nighters.
2-0 on ESPN.
2-1 NBATV? Can’t recall if we had more than three.

I think you’re right. It might be a marketing strategy. With teams jockeying for playoff seeding, games between playoff bound teams will have more meaning.
And the league had no idea that NOLA would be good. Of course LAL has yet to play NOLA or Dallas either. Lakers schedule takes a very sharp turn away from cream puff after Christmas.

I like invincible better. :)
But invisible teammates would explain all the steals, deflections, blocks, and loose balls the Spurs have gotten this year. I’m pretty sure though that NBA rules frown on having two extra players on the floor, much less invisible ones, so someone tell Neal not to let the cat out of the bag again. The less league office and the refs know about “Hustle” and “Effort,” the better. :)

The Spurs schedule remains relatively cakey. They dont play anyone really good until December 23rd when they go to Orlando
[ "Duncan, the Spurs' 34-year-old captain, was aghast when Splitter told him he used to watch him as a kid."]
"I didn't enjoy that at all," Duncan said
Having lost to the Slippers, and having had to come back — twice — against the Twolves, I don’t feel that the Spurs can overlook any team, or consider any schedule to be ‘relatively cakey.’ In fact, their better games seem to be against teams that are over 0.500. the losses to Dallas and NOOCH notwithstanding.

I think we’re gonna have to start calling Manu “The Anomaly”
One game after scoring 16 pts despite going 1-10 from the field, Manu has his first sub-double-digit scoring game of the season, despite garnering a team-high (with RJ 2.0) +27 in the ‘all-important plus-minus statistic.’ It seemed as though that, with everyone able to score at will, Manu was happy to be the decoy and facilitator today.
More games like this should do wonders for the health of our team… and their fans. :)

Late in the game I was about to say that Quinn might lose his job as he wasn’t handling the ball much for being a backup PG. Then suddenly the last three minutes or so he finally seemed to take charge of the offense, had a couple of assists and a basket and the Spurs score 10 points
he made some crap passes though, didn’t really look comfortable handling the ball and shot the ball poorly.
Considering he was playing New Orleans scrubs it’s not what i’d call a glowing endorsement.
I think defensive length really bothers him. Stops him from seeing the floor well enough to get in the groove.
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."
Honestly, Neal, ran the offensive nearly as well as Quinn which isn’t saying much either. Having said that, he did have 5 assists which is impressive.
It appeared to me that Neal became the main ball handler up at the top of the key from the point that Hill left the game with 10:03 left and the score at 94-62, while Quinn was running around in the wings. It appeared to me that’s how it continued up through the point where Neal made a running bank shot with 3:22 to go that made the score 99-78. The Spurs scored 5 points during that period while NO scored 16. During that particular period of time, Neal had none of his assists but had 2 turnovers. The Spurs also had a 24 second violation, and Blair had 2 turnovers.
From that point on, Quinn was bringing the ball down the court and seemed to be setting up the offense from the top of the key. The only turnover the remainder of the game was when Quinn’s pass to Tiago went off Tiago’s hands. The last 3 minutes, both Quinn and Neal had two assists. It seemed to me that Neal’s assists came more out of the flow of the offense rather than that he was running the offense. Neal’s earlier three assists all came while Parker, Ginobilli or Hill were in the game; and again seemed the flow of the offense rather than Neal running the offense.
Despite that opinion on my part, I’ve wondered whether Neal could do a better job of actually running the offense as the b/u point guard rather than Hill. It could be Pop was wondering himself and why it seemed to me that Neal was given that opportunity early in the 4th quarter. It didn’t seem to go that well to me, but I wouldn’t give up on the thought that Neal might turn out to be a better PG than Hill. Hill has been improving some recently, but with the Spurs having poor ball movement when both Tony & Manu out I’m wondering who will help out the most if one or the other is injured. I don’t think it’s Quinn, but to me it seemed like he only began running the offense in the last 3 minutes and things went more smoothly.

So how...
How are we supossed to throw a season late in Timmie’s career to get us another BIG man fresh off the draft if these guys continue to play so well with Timmie’s career whinding down. Only joking… kinda… I have wondered what direction the spurs would go in planning for a the great fundamentalless spurs. Seems to me that we need some kind of big catch in the draft to carry our great team part the timmie era… but wont be this year cause we are just playing too dame good.

As long as Tim is around I think they try for championships rather than lottery picks. This year the Spurs are 5-2 in games in which Tim has scored in single digits, and overall he is the #4 scorer on the team with an average of 14. They might miss his scoring less than his defense and rebounding.
Though he hasn’t really had a chance to show it yet, I think Tiago will be a good start towards replacing Tim. Even without a high lottery pick, once Tim and McDyess retire the Spurs will have a great deal of room under the salary cap (as presently exists, who knows quite what it will be at that time) to spend on free agent talent, whether it would be an NBA player or another international player. Considering some of the young talent that the Spurs will already have on their roster, having $24m off the books and available to sign a big man should get some interest. It’s rather difficult to think of a player that would match a Tim Duncan in his prime; though I think for about the same salary you could sign Kevin Love, Blake Griffin and Joakim Noah.
I think Misplaced-Texan was mostly joking, and perhaps forgot that the Spurs hit the jackpot with Timmy after a miserable year in which Robinson was injured. The Spurs then did not have any one comparable to Ginóbili and Parker who, with teammates like RJ 2.0, Hill, Dice, Blair, Neal, Splitter, etc. would be able to keep the team out of the lottery even if Timmy went down for a season. Hoping for a lottery jackpot again probably isn’t the best strategy, and the F.O. is doing a pretty good job of rebuilding (or really, renovating and refurbishing) on the fly.
I think you’re right, the Spurs will be in a good position to sign a quality big after Timmy’s and Dice’s salaries come off the books. Of course, Timmy might feel that his wheels are still good to go and he could pick up part of that $24M.
And though I’d love to get Noah, he won’t be available as a free-agent anytime soon ─ the Bulls signed him to an extension earlier this season. I like Love, but don’t see him as a foundation/centerpiece player… paired with Tony and Manu, he might be even better than he is in Minnesota, but we can’t know that for sure. (Also, the Twolves have about $11M in cap space available so I expect they’d fight to keep him.) Griffin I’m not so high on yet ─ sure, he has a ferocious dunk, but I’d like to see a better mid-range jumper, a post presence that demands consistent double-teams from the opposition, and shot-altering defense before pursuing him.
How about Gasol the Younger, who has a year left on his contract? Or Oden, if he weren’t so darned fragile? Roy Hibbert and Tyler Hansbrough both have 2 years left on their contracts… can Indiana afford to keep both? (Indiana is a whopping $34M over the cap, btw). I don’t see any of them as foundational guys you build a franchise around, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them wear the Silver and Black.
And, as you point out, there’s Splitter. We’ve not yet had the opportunity to see what he can do in the NBA. Great footwork, soft hands, and high BBIQ… let’s see it, Pop!
Hey, if posting a sharp, insightful, yet non-sarcastic comment were that easy, even olf would do it.

I was tossing out a few well-known names that added together would come up less than $24M. Marc Gasol and Hibbert were ones I thought of and would likely be preferable, but don’t seem to have the same name impact. There’s Dwight Howard, who would use up most ot the $24M, and of course there’s Haddadi ;)
True, Marc Gasol and Roy Hibbert don’t have the same impact name-wise. I thought of Gasol because he seems to play against his brother pretty well, and Hibbert seems to be having a breakout kind of season in Indiana after losing some extra poundage. And yeah, there’s Haddadi… I admit you’ve gotten me to consider him more seriously, but not to the tune of allocating a large part of that $24M to sign him. :)

Haddadi has been on the inactive list for several games, apparently considered the 5th or 6th big for Memphis. They are paying Thabeet nearly as much as Haddadi’s salary over what they pay Gasol. They’re not getting much from Thabeet, but since his contract goes through next season they’ll likely not re-sign Haddadi at the end of this season if he has not been traded.
I think Thabeet’s salary was set more or less because of his lottery pick ranking and there isn’t much Memphis can do about that. The mistake, if any, was in picking him in the first place. If Haddadi is available and relatively inexpensive to get as a free-agent next season, I agree that he might be an asset wearing Silver and Black. And we wouldn’t have to give up Hill to get him! :)
Still, a lot depends on how Blair and Splitter develop, and whether Timmy and/or Dice decide to play on beyond this season. And of course there’s the effect of the CBA negotiations and possible lockout to consider…. time enough to think about those things later, imho. Right now, one game at a time.

Great gifs, CD!
Correct me if I’m mistaken, please, but are the 2nd and 4th two more examples of a kind of slipped screen misdirection? In the first, it looks like Bonner gets free for an open three by faking a screen but then slipping away while the two Hornet defenders converge on Ginóbili (and Manu makes a great off-balance pass out of the double-team). In the second, I think Splitter pretends to set a screen for Parker but slips away towards the basket unmolested because his man sticks with the ball-handler and/or loses track of Tiago. RJ 2.0’s defender has to switch to cover the threat of an easy two for the open Splitter and is unable to recover in time when Parker swings the ball over to Rage, who was waiting behind the line in Bruce’s old corner office.
I’m liking these kinds of plays… they take advantage of defenders’ anticipation of the Spurs’ heavy use of screens. They create the kinds of breakdowns on defense that make coaches sit down in disgust and discourage opposing players from putting their energies into defending.
