Not ideal, but a win nonetheless. I am happy.
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
Tough crowd….sheesh. If Dallas doesnt hit those three BS treys, the Final score is closer to 99/84.

True, but some of the offensive execution in the 4th Q left much to be desired. Mistakes that were not caused by the Mavs’ defense also kept this from being a 12+point win.
Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I vow to never mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together again until we have a "quarterback."
And the Spurs did a much better job of contesting shots, especially down the stretch. Dallas got a few good looks after offensive rebounds that had the Spurs out of position, but by and large we got a hand in their face on everything else. I didn’t see the Spurs doing that a couple of weeks ago, and I thinks it’s a great sign.

Well, yes. The defense is getting better, but refresh my memory – why did we lose the almost 20 point lead in the 1st half. I’ve honestly forgotten. I should record these games.

A team full of streaky shooters hitting some shots at the same time the Spurs became a bit too fast and loose on offense. When the lead got reduced, Spurs refocused and started executing again. What aI see that is better than last season is that the Spurs would give up 8-0 runs to an opponent in two minutes, whereas now if a team makes up that much ground they are forced to expend more effort and time in doing so.

I don’t think we played lock down defense all game, but we are doing it for longer stretches than we were at the beginning of the season. It’s progress, and hopefully building.

to respond to bdj1der,
i’ve seen a Spurs logo with an hourglass in place of the spur.
Ah, Cleveland and Seattle. Two major cities locked in an eternal epic struggle to determine who's more tortured in sports. Due to the WNBA Champion Seattle Storm, Cleveland is starting to get the upper hand.
Why? Because we’re beating Father Time?

i dunno. I saw it on ESPN2. This was back in 2009. Maybe they were calling the Spurs old, boring, and slow.

I knew what they meant with that but the reason I stated seemed more fitting.

i think timmy won this game for us, when we were struggling he slowed the pace down and got some points in the post. he got a lot of rebounds and got a few well placed assists to keep us rolling.

Agreed. He slowed down the pace and kept the crowd out of it. This created the scoreboard space that allowed him to rest for most of the 4th Q.

Spurs have everything to be a champion, a star player in the clutch (Ginobili), A scorer (Parker), 3 point shooters (Neal, Bonner), a reliable inside presence (Duncan). One thing they lack though is depth in the frontcourt, specially against the Lakers.

It's a fez, I wear a fez now, fezzes are cool

It’s because he’s CHOSEN to be against the Spurs as part of his job this season: the part where he needs to “have a take” and he’s sticking with it. It generates buzz for the games and the league, as well as ratings for his employer.
But he doesn’t have a good reason as to what it would take, because he didn’t come to this lack of respect by anything other that (at most) a gut reaction – and perhaps much less. Maybe just a coin flip.
It’s all a show, and nothing more.

I have to say that, setting aside Nowitzki’s absence, which was of course important, I was a lot less impressed by Dallas’s front court tonight. They did do a good job of clogging the lane, especially on Parker. But the Spurs clobbered them on the boards, and also had several plays that really exposed the vulnerability of that zone they like to sit in. You can tell the Spurs did their homework after their first meeting. And I frankly think Tim Duncan dominated while he was on the floor. All in all, this game made me feel better about the way we match up with them.
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
Barkley is over-playing his hand now. Beyond the “Spurs are second best in Texas,” now he’s saying that Miami and Orlando are better than Boston. And that San Antonio might lose in the first round depending on the match up. Methinks he’s overplaying his “create come internet buzz” hand.

Yes, Chuck has this kind of personality where if he’s challenged he won’t back down, be it in a debate or on the basketball court. I think at this point he’s trying to convince himself the Spurs aren’t as good as he thought they were. Deep down he knows it, there is really no logical reason to believe the Mavs are a better team, what’s going on is he’s doubling down on a bad call and hoping the an injury to duncan or manu bails him out

I don’t recall so many media people last season pointing out that the Mavs’ 3-1 regular season record against the Spurs included an OT win in Dallas where Tony and Manu did not play, an end of season win where TD and Manu did not play, and an early season Spurs win where TD and Tony did not play.
Mavs got three 3-pt makes from Cardinal, 7 points from Ajinca, and a 30 point night from Butler. Those three things don’t happen if Dirk plays. The Mavs ended up about where they’d be in terms of point total had Dirk played considering the Spurs have upped their defense since the first time these teams played.

I vow to never mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together again until we have a "quarterback."
I never see missing your “star” player as an excuse for a loss. It’s a team and others, almost, always step-up.
Excuses, excuses.

Very true. It certainly matters but those things usually even out over an 82 game run. What counts is being healthy when it is time to defeat opponents four out of seven. I remind myself that when a player sits out, it’s not as though the team is playing 4 on 5. For a very short stretch of games you usually end up with your other key players over-producing plus the new player in the rotation contributing. Since Dirk’s contributions are more about offense than defense, the Mavs were able to make up the scoring difference more easily. Yet still lost.

I can see where you’re coming from. Guys always step up and find brand new ways to exist without the star, and the newness of it can be an advantage too.
But I disagree completely about the Mavs. Without Dirk they don’t have an identity or much of a fighting chance against elite teams. I think they played really well tonight, and the Spurs let them off the hook somewhat.
But… but… Jason Terry spreads his wings like R. Kelly after he makes a shot!
That’s GOT to count for something.

I would argue that even with Dirk, they hardly have an identity come the post-season. The Mavericks are the living and breathing epitome of fool’s gold. Outside of Nowitzki, the rest of the team is a bunch of role players who infrequently decide to show up.

The only valid reason to use it as an excuse, as I see it, is when your “star” player is out for an entire playoff series (didn’t Duncan injure his ankle at the end of like the 2002? season and we lost to the suns?).
Anyway, GSG.
We’re one of the few teams that are still “winners” even if we don’t win it all. Classy organization, classy fans.

2000, our first attempt at repeating. That, and the Manu-less 2009 playoffs, are the only first round exits in the Pop/Duncan era. As we agreed earlier, a few regular season games can be overcome (Mavs now 19-15 without Dirk all-time). A playoff series can not. You have to have your best players.

A year ago, RJ would have just sucked throughout the game. Was nice to see him bounce back a little bit. Still wasn’t ideal, but he made some good points and played much better defender afterwards.
I really like the two consecutive excellent defensive job he did in the 4th. And he continues his improvement in the rebounding aspect.

I’m thinking that Booner and Duncan will stay twit-less. If they join, Pop would be next. And that ain’t happening.

I’m hoping Duncan doesn’t go on Twitter. Twitters just destroys your image of people you once admired.
I did a lot of soul searching. I didn't find anything.
I don’t think Duncan would go and try Twitter.

He’s pretty sarcastic when in front of the cameras. I think his twitter would be full of one liners’

Perhaps the world needs an @FakeTimDuncan.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you need to go here asap.
I live to digress
Ho boy. How brilliant would that be?
If we found out that Tim Duncan was FakeCoachPop I would have to pack my things and quit the Internets, because nothing that perfect would or could ever happen again.

I think I’ll go now and set up a FakeTimDuncan account.

One of those games you felt you haven’t really won because they were missing their best player but if you lose it stings even more. Spurs did what they had to do. We have OCD for W’s and keep hoarding them.

Ah, Cleveland and Seattle. Two major cities locked in an eternal epic struggle to determine who's more tortured in sports. Due to the WNBA Champion Seattle Storm, Cleveland is starting to get the upper hand.
I see this comment in mysa.com
“Still, it’s nice to pile up the victories, even while running in an unbelievable streak of luck–Memphis without Gay, a short-handed post-trade Phoenix team, Denver without Anthony, LA in a team-wide funk, Dallas without Nowitzki, and now it looks as if Boston will be without both Rondo and Garnett when the Spurs come to town. So, even with the impressive record, it’s still way too early to be thinking about trophy #5.”
28-4, but it doesnt feel like that
And I know that the spurs had a lot of injuries in the past so, who cares about other teams problems, but still i dont like to win like this
How lucky were those Spurs opponents the past three seasons when multiple games were missing various pieces of the big-3? Oh yeah, that was a sign that the Spurs were too old and not good enough. I guess Boston, Dallas, and LA are just too old and no longer good enough.

The third-leading vote getter at All-Star Center got a DNP-CD? I suppose now that Bynum has a start under his belt he’ll get the job with Yao out.
Tough game against Boston coming up. They might not have Rondo or KG, but it will be a little evened out because it will be San Antonios segababa.

After playing the Knicks, no less, who may have struggled against Orlando but are not the wretched team of years past.
