Game #32 Preview: Spurs @ Mavericks
The Spurs had a big win against the Lakers on Tuesday. Let's start another win streak tonight against our Texas rivals, the Cubans.
Tonight's contest is on TNT, so I'm sure we'll get a dose of Sir Charles once again proclaiming the Mavs as the best team in Texas. Let's hope we get a repeat of the following after the game.
Now for the preview:
San Antonio Spurs @ Dallas Mavericks Where: American Airlines Center When: 12/30/2010, 8:30PM Spurs Time - Timezone Converter Watch: FSSW, TNT

Starters
PG: Tony needs to dominate Kidd like he dominated Fisher. The Mavs will pack the paint, so The Wee Frenchman will need to drive and dish to the plethora of Spurs' shooters. Kidd is shooting 3-pointers fairly well this year, so Tony needs to force him to shoot long 2s.
SG: A day of rest will probably pep up The Anomaly. He had a bad offensive game against the Lakers, but his defense on Kobe was stellar. Manu should bounce back. Stevenson's numbers have been so-so this season.
SF: Butler has fit in nicely at Dallas, providing some scoring punch. However, RJ has the better all-around game, fully exhibited in the Lakers' win. RAGE needs to concentrate on shutting down Butler on defense and continue his aggressive play at the rim.
PF: Dirk is still listed as day-to-day. He will be a tough matchup for Blair if he plays, even with a bum knee. DeBeast continued his offensive improvement against the Lakers, but will need to continue to show patience with Chandler patrolling the paint. If Dirk doesn't play, Marion should start in his place.
C: Timmeh had a really bad offensive game against the Lakers, but he wasn't needed. He played limutes and should be rested. Chandler has helped shore up both the Dallas defense and rebounding this year.
Bench
The Gnat and The Nutpuncher have always given the Spurs problems. If Dirk doesn't play, that shortens the bench for Carlisle and really limits the offense. George is back; the defense looks better. Neal and Bonner continue to shoot whenever open. Dice plays Dirk as well as anyone.
Coaching
Carlisle has gotten the Mavs to really play defense, while still maintaining a potent offense. Pop has been brillian this season in managing the roster and throwing wrinkles into game plans.
Intangibles
Dallas busted a 12-game win streak that last time the teams played and always plays tough against the Spurs. The Spurs are coming off a huge win and have been otstanding on the road.
Mojo
The Spurs are off to their best start in franchise history. The Mavs lost to Toronto, not good even without Dirk.
Prediction
I'm trusting that the Spurs won't have a letdown. Even if Dirk doesn't play, this game won't be easy.
Key(s) to the Game
Turnovers - The Mavericks are middle of the pack in turnover rate. The Spurs need to continue their thieving ways, in order to start the fast break and get easy points. The Mavericks defense can't stop what it can't catch.
Offensive Passing - The Mavericks all-around defense has no glaring holes, so Tony and Manu are going to have to penetrate the defense and then look to kick out to the shooters. Ball movement needs to be crisp to provide open looks.

Lovely work as always, Cap Hizzle.
I can’t help loving Charles because he’s just . . . Charles . . . but that aside—I cannot wait to hear the sh*t he’s going to take tonight for being so wrong about the Spurs. And you know he’s just going to dig the hole deeper. Should be fun.
It’s not just Charles who still can’t get it right, though. During the Spurs win over the Lakers I heard one of the NBA TV studio crew (it might have been Kevin McHale, sigh, or even, double sigh, C-Webb), marvel that the “older” Spurs were able to prevail over a “younger” team like the Lakers.

Tony’s just mad because Fisher keeps beating him (in like April / June I mean, not December). I mean the last time the Spurs got past the Lakers Luke Walton, Kwame Brown and Smush Parker were starters.
Plus there’s all the rumors that Eva left him because she doesn’t want to be with a loser, right?
But this is a preview about the Mavs game – sorry Cap.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
What was the deal with Fisher running cross court to confront Jefferson, and then walking away when Jefferson gave him some of it back? It was odd. Like, I’m turning the other cheek, after running full speed to offer it up.
Probably just general frustration manifesting itself in other ways. Tensions always seem to be high on that team and you cannot really take it out on the main guy instigating the tension (Kobe).
Lauri: thank goodness I have you magnificent bastards to waste [the offseason] with.
I guess he didn’t like Jefferson pushing him to the ground to “get open” on that break and decided to mention it to him?
But it’s not really Jefferson’s fault he got away with it. And both teams give and take their share.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.
I understand people get upset, especially older and slower people like myself.
I just thought it humorous that someone can be so enraged, running across the court, but when it’s back in his face he takes the “I’m a gentleman approach” and walks away tootsweet.
Who knows, wouldn’t surprise me if it was just an effort to energize the rest of his team or something.
It could have been just built up frustration or making a point to the refs – but he’s usually smarter, more controlled and calculated than that. He’s not really known for losing his poise.
Hey if repeating as champions were that easy even the Spurs could do it.

The Mavs are playing great this season. I would definitely put them among the top three teams in the West. As much as people may be annoyed by Barkley’s claim that they are better than the Spurs, at this point it is hard to argue with him. They have played a tougher schedule, they have beaten San Antonio once, they have ended the streaks of several hot teams, they have so far played better defense than us, they have a lot of depth and playofff experience. There is a lot to like about them.
The Mavs who concern me the most are Chandler and Marion. Yes, we know all about Nowitzki and Terry. But Marion has a chance to be their Jefferson. He had a so-so year last year, and people may have prematurely written him off. It looks like he is playing much better in his second year as a Maverick, and that could mean a lot for them. Chandler is really fitting in well for them.
As much as I respect the Lakers, my feeling about their big men is that, aside from Bynum, they are soft. How many ridiculous lay-ups did Parker get the other night while Gasol and Odom stood around and watched? Those guys are highly skilled with the ball, but they are soft, as the Celtics demonstrated in the playoffs last season. I do not think that can be said about this version of the Mavericks. Nowitzki is still a big powder puff, but guys like Chandler, Butler, and Heywood are there to do all the physical work, allowing Dirk to be the seven foot shooting guard that he prefers to be. That is what concerns me most about them. I don’t think Parker will be able to break down their interior defense with impunity. I don’t think Jefferson will get ridunkulous ally oops. Those easy baskets will not be there. Hopefully we can get some easy baskets in transition, but in the half court things will be tougher than they were the other night against the Lakers. One of the things I want to see tonight is how Blair plays. I want to see that his play the other night wasn’t a fluke. If he can step up and give us a double double against the Mavericks front court, then I think this will give me a lot of confidence about what the Spurs are capable of this season.
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
I hear what you’re saying but the Mavericks will always be the same team to me, the team that for all the potential they had and all the hype that was produced about them nonetheless FAILED to remotely meet expectations. Ever since 2006, their championship aspirations have been on the decline. Short of a Kobe Bryant to Dallas trade, this team will not win a championship for the foreseeable future and for that I am thankful.
I confess I haven’t watched any Mavericks game this season. Maybe I am wrong. Perhaps they have changed; just as Richard Jefferson has become adjusted to the Spurs system so too Butler and Heywood have adjusted to the Mavericks system. I will most certainly watch the team tonight. With or without Dirk, this Mavericks team will be display and I will watch intently. Know this though, this is the regular season and the Mavericks have always performed well during the regular season only to crash and burn in the play offs. Ever since the double whammy of 2006 and 2007 my belief that this damnable team can accomplish anything has thankfully gotten smaller.
In fact I would argue that the day they traded Devin Harris to the Nets for Jason Kidd was the day they effectively closed their championship window. Besides the Teutonic barbarian, Harris was the only clear advantage they had over the Spurs. He might suck now but when he was on the Mavericks he had Parker dominated game after game because of his speed curiously enough.

Actually to make a long essay short, the fact that the Raptors beat the Mavericks in Dallas WITHOUT Dirk Nowitizki really tells where this team stands. As always, stopping Dallas is a matter of shutting down Dirk, which is exactly what McDyess, the unhailed warrior, did in last year’s play offs.
Dallas, thy team is forever doomed to the fate of mediocrity. Holding the Golden Trophy of Basketball Immortality is granted to teams only on a select basis; those who were given the opportunity, but nonetheless failed to grasp it once, will never be given the chance again. So it has been said, so shall it be written.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. Spurs wheel and deal, but they try to keep the core intact and minimize the impact of changes. An offseason of continuity may have been what the Mavs needed.
Lauri: thank goodness I have you magnificent bastards to waste [the offseason] with.
Maybe that’s what they needed all along but Cuban was just too antsy. Case in point: Can you imagine the Mavs with Devin Harris now instead of Kidd? I don’t care what Terry or Butler are doing, Harris would be the second leading star in that team.

The thing about ending long winning streaks doesn’t impress me as much as others. Once a team hits ten wins, they are due to lose, even if from bad luck. When you’ve got a long streak and play a good team, the opponent will play better more often than not just for that one game. The bigger issue is playing well enough to defeat someone four times out of seven over a two week period.

Well, I’ll take a +1 on the Mavs in the standings whenever I can get it this season. One of the reasons the Spurs wanted to get a better start was to give themselves a better chance in the playoffs. We need to take this series in case a tiebreaker is needed for seeding in April.
A win is a win—that’s true. I just hope the Spurs are up for it, because I think it will be a tough one.
I see no reason why this game should be a tough one. It might turn out to be a tough one, but then that will be on us. So far, the Spurs seem to lose against the Mavs only when Dirk has a great game, much like the game earlier this season and game 1 of the playoffs last year. Without Dirk, there is no reason why the Spurs shouldn’t beat the Mavs. If we lose, it’s on us.

This is a good time to mention some Dirk facts (at the risk of further inviting the jinx).
The Mavs are 26.6 points per hundo better in minutes with Dirk on the court than in minutes without him. Nobody else in the NBA is even close to that kind of difference. The splits of the Boston starters, Garnett and Pierce, are closest with 19 and 18 points per 100 poss. better.
When Dirk’s on the court, they shoot a 54.6 efg%, without him 45.4. They make 20 FTs per 48 in the Dirk minutes, 13 per in sans-Dirk moments.
His lineups are even better on defense, although reason suggests the starters’ defense will survive his absence. It’s 46.1% to 51.4% eFG for Dallas opponents depending on, you guessed it, Dirk Nowitski.
The Mavs are 26.6 points per hundo better in minutes with Dirk on the court than in minutes without him
Hope our guys can increase that number tonight!
