Rec’d.

And man, can this team hang some quarters on opponents. Once they turn the tide with better focus on defense and get an outside shot to drop, it is on. Too much talent to hold down for all but the handful of no-legs games that every team has (see Spurs @ Clippers, December 1).

Spurs offensive rebound rate: 18%
Wolves offensive rebound rate: 45%

Simply brutal. Im’a have to see the last time we had a defensive rebounding fail of this magnitude. On the plus side, wolves were just 41.5% on FGs, 3 made threes and 17 TO.

I disappeared (puppy issues) just as the Spur got it to within single-digit striking range, and they tie it back up a 99 when I looked on gamechannel… and they go on to win?! Hold the Twolves to 15 in the 4th? Was it defense, or were the Twolves just missing shots they were making earlier, and vice versa, the Spurs making shots they were missing?

Shh, other teams might catch on what Quinn’s up to and account for every minutes he’s on the bench. But you’re right, Pop sneaked back to the bench with the ring. What? You thought he was in the locker room drinking his vino – he brought it out with him.

Ten minutes of defensive oppression that makes a young team wilt. Offensive execution that was a mixture of making shots that had been missing, plus easy scores that come from great defense.

Too often we had Manu and/or Hill boxing out Love and Beasley. It wasn’t just that our bigs got out-efforted (though that happened early in the game). We got cross matched on defense and could not control the paint.

Here’s a stat line to ponder, Manu 1-10 from the field (his only make was a three), yet he still ends up with 16 points, a perfect 13-13 from the line, 4 assists, 2 TOs, 1 steal, 1 board, plus-minus of +12. Even on an off-night shooting, the man imposes his will on a game.

On the other hand, just when we thought we’d stop seeing The Tim Duncan Line he went and put it up again (perhaps the first true Tim Duncan line of the year, since a triple dub is out of the ordinary). 9-14 FG for 22 points, 10 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals 4 blocks and 1 TO. And of course +19 in 35 minutes.

by greyberger on Dec 3, 2010 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

yes, a very TD-like line. But remember that he put up 16 points in the first half, so his second-half points production was not very impressive. I’m assuming though that he turned it up a notch on defense and grabbing boards in the 4th.

Well, I’m not worried about how long he plays, I’m more looking at how he plays when he does. The team seems to lose it rhythm when he is in. I hope it is a getting used to the game thing and he will get it with time. Also, I’m worried about his lower body strength, gets pushed around a bit. And oh yeah, rebounding.

I think Tiago’s 16 in the +/ stat is not at all a reflection of his play. Recall in his first stint there were 2 turnovers by Bonner on inbounds plays while Tiago was moving down to the other end of the court. The Spurs weren’t hitting their shots for the most part, and yet made 2 baskets on Tiago assists.

The 2nd time he came in was in the middle of Beasley shooting FT’s, which resulted in a -1 for him. He was in for less than 2 minutes, and during that time Pop got his 2 technicals to result in another -2 for Tiago.

Other than Love getting a quick two points while driving past Tiago in his first few seconds of his first stint, I don’t recall that it was Tiago’s man doing much scoring while he was in. It was often Beasley and Brewer doing the scoring. How much Tiago might have helped out is debatable, I think his assignment (Love and Koufos) were putting up 3 point shots that missed.

by Alamo on Dec 4, 2010 9:27 AM CST reply actions

The 2nd time he came in was in the middle of Beasley shooting FT’s, which resulted in a -1 for him.

I don’t think it works that way. I’m pretty sure FTs accrue to the players who were on the court when the foul was committed.

by doggydogworld on Dec 4, 2010 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

I’m not quite sure how it works, but for one thing the NBA boxscore shows Tiago with a -16 as does ESPN, while popcornmachine.net has a -15.

Tiago’s first stint began with Tony going to the line, with the score at 22-17 Spurs. He ended the stint with the score at 38-37MIN. That is a 6 point swing (-6), unless you count Tony’s FT as occurring from the foul prior to Tiago entering, in which case it’s only a -5.

Second stint Tiago comes in with Beasley at the line with the score at 76-71MIN and Beasley sinks his free throw to make it 77-71. Tiago leaves at the end of the third qtr with the score 86-71 MIN. If you don’t count the free throws to Tiago, the game goes from Minnesota up by 6 to up by 15, a -9 for Tiago.

So if you don’t count foul shots of a player already at the line, then it seems Tiago should have a -14. To get to -16 you’d have to include Tony’s free throw after Tiago came in and Beasley’s. That would be the first stint going from a 5 point Spurs lead (Tony’s FT made it a 6 point lead) to a 1 point Minnesota lead for a -6. The second stint going from a 5 point Minnesota lead (not counting Beasley’s FT after Tiago came in) to a 15 point Minnesota lead for a -10. That means Tiago received credit for an additional -2 points for FT shots occurring due to FTs that happened due to fouls while he was on the bench. He gets another -2 for Pops double technical, and -4 on Bonner’s turnovers on inbounds play for a total of -8. Again, half of Tiago’s -16 had little to do with Tiago’s play; and most of the other -8 wasn’t directly related to how Tiago was playing nor the team playing worse due to Tiago.

by Alamo on Dec 4, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

My error. If Tony’s FT counts as having occurred prior to Tiago’s first stint (being fouled while Tiago was on the bench) then the Spurs going from a 6 point lead to trailing by 1 is a 7 point swing in Tiago’s first stint. Then likewise not counting Beasley’s FT’s to Tiago when Tiago enters due to the foul committed before, then you go from a 6 pt TW lead to a 15 pt lead for -9 to make -16.

Popcornmachine’s gameflow agrees with a -7 for Tiago’s first stint, but indicated he had only a -8 on his second stint. If you don’t count Beasley’s FT to Tiago you get a -9, but if you do you get a -10. I’m not sure how they came up with -8 other than they erred.

Checking a couple of other players and as far as I could tell doggyworld’s principle of counting the FT’s according to who was in the game at the time of the foul seems to work.
