Anyone think Lakers attempt a trade before the deadline?

by ramirezm315 on Dec 28, 2010 9:55 PM CST reply actions

what do they need?

Ah, Cleveland and Seattle. Two major cities locked in an eternal epic struggle to determine who's more tortured in sports. Due to the WNBA Champion Seattle Storm, Cleveland is starting to get the upper hand.

I wouldn’t mind trading for some Ann & Nancy. For me, I mean… the Spurs have enough heart. :)

For who and for what need? And what would they give up?

They have the talent to win….. they need to focus on basketball. Maybe they figure they can turn it on for the playoffs.

I could see the Lakers as a team Steve Nash might go to, if Phoenix is interested in moving him and he’d like a championship. I think it would likely be a multi-team trade if they went for it to get the right pieces to replace players (maybe Odom) that they’d have to give up. It would change Kobe’s role quite a bit, but it would seem to make things much easier for him. I could see Gasol getting a lot of easy shots.

by Alamo on Dec 29, 2010 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

Well, it’s not like LA’s defense from the PG position would take a hit if they make a move for Nash. Tony did whatever he wanted to last night.

Enjoying the trip to # 172 as much as humanly possible

by J.R. Wilco on Dec 29, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Who would be getting the better of a Phoenix-Lakers trade in which Nash, Frye and Dudley go to L.A. for Odom, Artest and Blake? I’d think that the Lakers would improve on offense (if Kobe let’s Nash run the offense) while the Suns would be better defensively.

And wonderful defense on Bryant from Ginobilli. Other guys made life hard for Bryant as well, but Manu really harassed him effectively and got him flustered. Beautiful.

Fish’s T and Kobe’s exchange with Hill were both great. Our guys George and RJ more than kept their cool. Both Kobe and Fish like to f*ck with an opposition. Like in their series against Houston. This time they didn’t just lost the game, they also lost these psychological battles.

I never take the high road, but I tell other people to, that way there is more room for me on the low road.

by SinCitySpur on Dec 28, 2010 9:59 PM CST reply actions

I think that is what the Lakers would like everyone to beleive. This was their third straight loss, they should have been hungrier for the win than the Spurs. Bryant’s and Fisher’s T’s, Fisher’s offensive foul and Jackson’s immediate call for a timeout just shows how important any win is right now for them. Of course if your a Laker fan, you’d likely brush this off as just another game.

by TD21 on Dec 28, 2010 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

It both is and it isn’t. The Lakers’ coaches all had this date circled. It certainly meant a lot to Kobe, and probably to his teammates. Yes, it’s just one (more) loss for them, only one more game back in the standings. But as much as this game was an indication for Spurs fans of where the team stacks up against the Lakers, it was the same thing in reverse for Lakers fans. The papers tomorrow will have a field day on them.

I wandered into another team’s blog (Was?) right after the Spurs beat them, and they were wondering how the Spurs have their record with Duncan’s meager numbers. Unless you’ve watched a lot of Spurs games or read a lot of Spurs news, a lot of people are still unfamiliar with our offensive play which doesn’t feature Timmeh as our 1st option a lot.

That’s a mature attitude, I can respect that. I’d feel the same way if it were the other way around (even though I thought Artest shoulda gotten a flagrant 1 for taking down Parker). In fact I felt like that after losing to the Magic last week.

Mike Monroe: ...the uninformed presume Parker is expendable.

by freshtunarightofftheboat on Dec 28, 2010 11:23 PM CST up reply actions

I would have agreed with a flagrant for Artest, except he actually got the ball. I dont think the refs should be able to call it a flagrant if the player actually gets the ball.

And you have to remember, that was a little like Horry/Nash (which didnt deserve the flagrant). You’ve got a tiny guy, and a really, really big guy- the big guy is going to win. And it’s going to look bad.

I’d also factor in that it looked like Artest kind of tried to hold him up after the contact, too. It definitely wasnt malicious- just a good, hard “no easy baskets” foul.

Bonner with the nice box out!

by SpursfanSteve on Dec 28, 2010 11:26 PM CST up reply actions

To me, it looked like Artest horse-collared TP with his other arm (the one not going for the ball) and spun him around. But I only had the broadcast view and the replay; the refs were there on the spot.

I saw both of Artest’s arms come down on TP’s arms- and since Artest was behind him and the angle TP was going up for the shot, he pretty much had to spin. One of Artests arms got the ball, the other got shoulder/arm. Was a hard foul, but not dirty. I’d be more upset if it had injured Tony.

Honestly, the play Tiago got clotheslined was worse- and it happened later in the game too. One of the Lakers backup bigs while “fighting through a screen” pretty much wrapped his arm around Tiago’s throat. THAT was dirty and unnecessary.

i said in the game thread that the artest foul wasn’t flagrant, but didn’t get any agreement. the splitter one was worse.

Hi SCG,
I was curious so just went over to SilverScreen for the first time, and have to say I was impressed. The Laker fans were pretty civil and mature. I am so used to the walmart Laker fans all around me that it totally surprised me. The only other time I have wandered to another site after a win was to the Denver site, and I was not at all impressed. Expected Lakers to be worse, but they were pretty cool.

Lauri: thank goodness I have you magnificent bastards to waste [the offseason] with.

by swgeek on Dec 28, 2010 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, I never wander because I don't want to be accused of trolling, and we get lots of trolls on SS&R.

I just wanted to come over and see what you guys were about. Had some interaction with JRW earlier and he was cool. True Lakers fans, and most members of SS&R, are pretty awesome. Of course there are the bandwagoners and there’s nothing we can do about them, even though they do their best to make the rest of us look douche-y. We try to treat opposing fans respectfully, and crack down on those who don’t, but we don’t always get the same treatment in return. So I normally stay on my home site.

Never been a Spurs fan, but hey, when you get your butt handed to you by a team that plays better, why be mad at the team, right? We sucked and that’s all there was to it. Congrats on your win and may it go our way next time around. ;-)

You’re a good representative for Laker fandom, SoCalGal. I live north of LA, and really don’t respect Lakers fans who don’t know anything about the game, just show up around the playoffs and expect their local team to win every year. I’m glad that true Lakers fans don’t like the bandwagoners either. :)

Did you say plus? That reminds me…Bonner played tonight. Very respectable 8/5 with a KILLER BUZZER BEATER to top it off. +10 for the night. Not too shabby.

+1. He was excellent.

And so was Blair. Between tonight, and his 20/20 games last year, does anyone else want to doubt that he’s capable of bringing it against the biggest and best?

Nor did Bynums (Blair gave him a pretty post move).

And if you watched Blair, he was CALLING for the ball a LOT against them. He wanted to run 4-Down. He knows hes got something to prove. He can be so much more than a pick and roll big.

But as just a pick and roll big…he aint half bad ;)

And the most recent PtR quotes are at the very bottom of the page. So I not sure that’s the best way to present them, but that’s the setup right now.

For a guy with his tenure in the NBA, he had to know how difficult he was making it on the guy interviewing him by giving him a one word answer and then just standing there. He must have just been absolutely hating life in Toronto and despising his time on the court to act like that.

Neal will see some dropage. Neal sometimes gets put in as a backup for the 3. However, this allows Spurs to rest Manu/Parker more at times. So it should just reduce minutes overall.

I’m not sure just how much Neal’s minutes will go down, although there’s sure to be some slippage.

Neal’s proving to be quite valuable.

From ESPN Lakers blog:

All told, it was a 4-for-5 start for 24, and it looked as if he was going to roll. Or maybe not. He’d finish the first quarter 4-of-10, and go to the half 4-for-14. In the third, he managed to hit a shot. Singular. Heading into the fourth, Bryant had missed 14 of 19. A brief flurry in the fourth brought up his point total, but in the end he finished 8-of-27.

For those keeping score at home, that’s 16 more than any of his teammates. Nineteen more than Pau Gasol, 18 more than Lamar Odom.

yes, but let’s give the Spurs’ D some credit. And… what if San Antonio makes more three’s next time? Or Timmy has a double-double? Or Manu goes into God-mode? The Spurs’ defense was awesome, but they have plenty of room for improvement on the other side of the ball. I don’t know if I’m more impressed with their D or that they won by 15 despite not playing their best ball.

But she’s soooo sweet and friendly and most dog-lovers fall in love with her immediately. DeBeast was great! Those second chance points courtesy of his offensive rebounding made a lot of difference in the game. The ball movement was also superb. by freshtunarightofftheboat on Dec 29, 2010 12:09 AM CST up reply actions

As the commentators were saying, the Lakers couldn’t take advantage of their size. The Spurs were setting up traps for the the Lakers’ bigs. If they pass the ball to either Gasol or Bynum, a second Spurs defender immediately comes into help. They swarmed them like bees which resulted to ball strips and deflections. Overall a great team effort.

Yes. The ball was staying too long in Kobe’s hands as he was forcing a lot of shots (8/27 from the field). He had a bad night so the better choice was to look for teammates but apparently, he didn’t. Meanwhile, the Spurs took advantage by moving the ball well and playing some good D not to mention the energy and focus.

He’ll be wrong about the Mavs having the better record, but I still think it’ll come down to which team wins on Thursday, at least as far as Charles is concerned.

Anyway, his opinion, our opinion, Jason Terry’s opinion…. none of them matter to the Spurs. They don’t pay attention to it because they know it’ll be settled on the court by the two teams, regardless of what the pundits say.

I think you’re right. Barkley will intensify his rhetoric if the Spurs lose, even if that doesn’t make his previous prediction true. Sir Chas’s business is to stir the populace for the almighty market share. I don’t even think he believes what he says though – I believe he is a closet Spurs fan.

I’ve thought for more than a week now that the Dallas game is more important than this Lakers game was as happy as I am about the result tonight. I hope Dirk plays, but even that could be played against the Spurs if Dirk seems hobbled – ‘heroic Mavs stalwart Nowitzki valiantly defends his team’s losing effort’ – . We just need to get that win.

The Spurs, as you hint, seem to have a good take on things: the ‘W’ matters the most. That is all.

I do that too… all the time. It has to do with the way the parser interprets two minus signs together… sometimes you get a long dash, like you have above, sometimes it invokes the tag to strike out text. I still don’t understand how it decides which to do, so I simply type 196 on the numeric keyboard with the Alt key held down to get the long dash. And, of course there’s the ‘Preview’ button to check comments before posting…. a neat shortcut someone (jrw?) suggested to do this quickly is to type the “Tab” key, then press the space-bar. If all looks as you intend it to be, press the space-bar again to post it.

It’s no accident that San Antonio’s uncharacteristically permissive defense of late coincided with Hill’s absence as a result of a sprained ankle. With him out, the Spurs allowed four straight opponents to hit the century mark, culminating in the 123 they permitted Orlando on Thursday. For the season, San Antonio gives up 4.6 points per 100 possessions fewer with Hill on the floor.

Props to RJ. A year ago, he would be afraid even to take as many shots as he did. Even though his shot stopped falling (which would have broken the game open early on), he still stayed involved and tried to score in many ways.

Tied for team high +18 with Timmy. 15 pts, 7 reb, 2 assists, 1blk and no turnovers. His D was pretty good as well even if he didn’t end up guarding Kobe or any specific player.

Oh and loved the little push on floppy Fisher. That was nice.

From Andre McNeill:

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Kobe Bryant’s 13 straight misses marks the worst run he’s had in any game in his career.

An amazing thing to note: The Spurs won despite the bad shooting night from Duncan and Ginobili.

Bad shooting nights from RJ and Neal as well. If they hit half of theirs the game would have been blown open sooner.

The Spurs shot 42.5 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from 3-point range, and 66.7 percent from the line. A quick check of Basketball-Reference.com shows they hadn’t won a game with that sort of statistical combination since beating the Phoenix Suns in November, 2005.

I guess there’s something to those Trade Tony rumors, earlier in the season, after all. All those ‘guests’ egging us to trade Tony was a conspiracy to divest us of one of our most effective weapons this season.

Over 600 comments. I guess a number of people were following this game. A defense-first victory that could’ve been by a wider margin.

Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I vow to never mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together again until we have a "quarterback."
