Blazersedge: Blogs reviews
Fairly critical of PTR. Take it with a grain of salt, but it's not an unfair review.

Well… we DO do all of those things that are mentioned. They’re just not always front-paged. To bad they weren’t grading on quality of community.

Quality of community is hard to judge on a quick fly-by...

I get what he’s saying, but I disagree with his basic premise:
Everybody wants to write about A game, very few people seem to want to write about THE game.
Speaking for me personally, I don’t want to write about THE game, I want to write/read about the SPURS. I think that’s a definitive distinction. However, this does open the discussion about what PtR could do to improve the experience. So add your two cents.
With all due respect, gentlemen, we're not as crazy as she is.

I think he meant that we didn’t write so much about the inner, big-picture working of the Spurs as much as we did about a game in particular. I think that shows he doesn’t really read many of the recaps, but hey.
And yes, that was my idea. It’s a good place to think about what we want from PTR.
I smell death... everywhere.
Yeah, that's my thinking. Recaps are swell, but macro- perspective struck me as being on the short side — not just here, but in general.

anyone who writes in the subject line gets an automatic eye/elbow roll and negative 20,000,000 arbitrary points in my book. My book of other books that you should be reading before this one.
I did this the other day. So embarrassing. I blame the iPhone.

Some observations:
48 Minutes of Hell is indeed one of the best at what they do, but PtR isn’t trying to do the same thing, so comparing them doesn’t really make sense.
PtR is a community blog. So are most of the SBN blogs, for that matter. It kind of cracks me up that SBN wised up and harnessed this energy source in order to generate profits. “Hey, there are thousands of fans for every team online at any given minute, and they create loads of content every day simply because they love their teams! And all this content is scattered across their lonely personal blogs and Facebook pages and whatnot and it’s just sitting there, ripe for the taking! Let’s talk them into posting for us and then we can sell advertising!” I mean, kudos to them. It’s brilliant. But PtR is basically a fan blog. Yes, you have a masthead and writers who generate content, but those writers aren’t getting paid. The writers at 48 Minutes of Hell are (maybe not a lot, but they ARE). Big difference. Pay the PtR writers and I promise you would see podcasts and videotaped discussions and more.
As for what PtR does want to do—as Drums pointed out, it’s about creating and maintaining a sense of community. The comments at 48MoH are (generally) good, yes, but they aren’t intended as dialogue, and they don’t become an integral part of the nature of the coverage the way comments on PtR do.
I see that timbo mentions traffic stats when discussing certain blogs but doesn’t mention traffic stats for PtR. Assuming (as I can assure you the honchos at TrueHoop and SBN do) that unique visits are the lifeblood and the raison d’etre for any blog on their networks, it would be interesting to see what the traffic stats are for all members. You know the stats for LA and Miami will be tops, simply because the fan base is so big. But what about, say, traffic stats for all the Spurs blogs we know about? Another nugget (haha, I said nugget) of information that would be hell to compile but interesting to see would be how many times blog entries are mentioned in aggregators and on NBA teams’ official pages. In other words, who is best at creating content that is good enough to be picked up and disseminated across the Internet?
As for the “not enough content” angle . . . that’s just laughable. Looking at one day and saying “there was only one story posted! Get on the stick!” is unfair. You have to look at a range of days. In a way, I think that having so many previews and quick caps and recaps tends to obscure the excellent analytical posts that pop up now and then from some of our stats and charts wizards (I won’t list names because I’m afraid I’d leave someone off, but you know who you are). But then again, maybe that’s the trade-off PtR has to be willing to make to give as many fans as possible a voice. PtR also manages to maintain a really high standard of thoughtful commentary while allowing just bout everyone to speak, and keeps civility at a maximum to boot. Anyone with even a day’s experience of moderating a blog where all are welcome to comment will tell you that’s a small miracle in itself.
PtR fills a certain kind of niche. If changes were to be made, the niche would have to be altered and the community would alter as a result. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s a BIG thing.
That said, I would love to see more in-depth coverage of THE game, but that may properly be work for a different kind of blog. I’m frustrated at times (UNDERSTATEMENT) by the blogs that purport to provide whole-league coverage. I’ve been on the lookout lately for articles and essays about the basics of NBA basketball and how the game is or isn’t changing. I’m painfully aware that my understanding of the game and its strategies is shallow at best, but it’s getting really damn hard to find content (at least online—maybe I should go to the library) that will help me develop my own BBIQ. Okay, I’m really rambling afield now, but I’ll just mention that I LOVE NBA Playbook and Hardwood Paroxysm’s “Have Ball, Will Travel” features and various other let’s-break-it-down examples of analysis. If we had more of that, I would be thrilled. As Cap said, this is a SPURS blog, so maybe it could be done with a specific Spurs slant.
Good lord, my boss just wandered by to tell me “You’re in charge for the rest of the day” because she’s leaving and I have this wall of text up on my monitor that clearly has NOTHING to do with the page proofs I am supposed to be reviewing. Heh.

Wow. That was long.

Well said Lauri, and definately rec’d. I am more thankful for PTR than anyone knows, and off the top of my head, I cannot think of anything I’d like to change. I like the Spurs, I come here to read and comment about the Spurs, with other Spurs fans. What a concept!
Now, on the league-wide angle, I think our bloggers/posters/fanshot-ers do a more than adequate job of posting fanshots of league wide content. Just judging from various threads/posts, most of us seem to keep up with the the NBA’s (and sports in general) daily happenings. I know the Spurs are not the only sports team most PTRockers follow. Myself definately included. Everyone here does their best, and we have a great community.

I quickly scanned the referenced article and immediately began compiling my thoughts for how to objectively comment about it. Dealing with a mix of frustration and exasperation and apathy, I tried to organize things mentally so that I could write something thoughtful and insightful in response to timbo’s “ASSessment.”
Then I scrolled through all the comments over here and read yours. One of the best comments I’ve ever read on PtR; you said it all. There’s nothing I can say. Well done, and spot on.
And recced to the massive quantity of free time this goober apparently has.

I spend a lot of my writing time hanging out in the comments and keeping the discussion going. It’s what I’ve always done on PtR (and with all of the additional administrative duties now on my plate having taken over for Wayne) it’s about all I have time for what with Mrs JRW, our five kids, and my paying job.
But if the site would improve by my moving some/all of that time over to writing about THE game instead, and posting new content to the front page, I’d be willing to do it. I figure I write between four to five thousand words in the comments on a given week. Sometimes that number is even higher — and I’m not counting GOL‘s and verra nize’s.
Is consolidating/revising/shifting that writing to a slightly different format what many of you would like to see? Obviously it’s what timbo is expecting, but how does PtR feel about it? And what would best attract new readers?
Enjoying the trip to # 172 as much as humanly possible
No i like PTR the way it is, it’s not the prototypical sports blog and that’s what makes unique. I come here so i can read about my spurs and also have a few laughs reading the comments while i do it. I don’t comment much but ive been coming here for about 2 years wouldn’gt change a thing.

Please don’t. Don’t change anything, you’re doing well. I don’t see us or you or this in the business of pleasing outsiders’ half-hearted critiques; I see PtR as simply a great big couch that a whole bunch of friends are simply sitting on, watching a game/season together. That’s what originally brought me here, and that’s what I feel currently brings others here. We’re not USA Today. We’re not Spurs.com. There’s no reason for you to be reactionary to an individual or group.
I’ll speak on behalf of everyone here and say:
You have a responsibility that most of us cannot even fathom. Everyone else has the luxury of not knowing what you know, or having to do what you do. Outsiders don’t want to understand because deep down in places they don’t talk about while alone in their basements, they want you on the masthead; they NEED you on the masthead. We use words like otstanding, amazine, brillian. We use these words as a backbone of an internet existence spent cheering for a team. They use them as a punchline. You have neither the time nor the inclination to explain yourself to someone who rises and sleeps under the very freedom of blogging quality that you provide, and then questions the manner in which you provide it. We would rather they just said thank you, and went on their way. Otherwise, we suggest they just pick up a keyboard and register a domain, either way we don’t give a damn what they think they’re entitled to.

GOLD STAR — denotes a basketball blog that is one of the standards of the genre. The blog has superior content, is frequently updated, and demonstrates a large and actively participatory readership.
I fail to see how this isn’t PtR. Can things improve? Always, but to say that we need to “get on the stick” is ridiculous to say the least. Keep on pounding!
For me though the main value of PTR that is not that measurable is in it’s open forum nature, with a sense of unity between its memebers that makes this place your home, your getaway and you support during our Spurs (or else) bad moments, at least for me it is (therefore my sign-in name).
That’s beyond Gold Star template rating.
Certainly, keep on Pounding!

It’s a review by one guy who admittedly posts occasionally on Blazers Edge and also on a Lakers blog, so I don’t put too much stock in it. I like the sense of community we have here at PTR. I can get my info on THE game elsewhere. I don’t want us to be everything to all people, especially because of one, non-professional, opinion of one “foreigner” who doesn’t read us regularly. He hit us for a lack of photos, so I KNOW he doens’t pay much attention!

agreed with this to a T.
Blazersedge is all the sudden the standard to which all blogs are judged/rated? it must be given the ranking they gave “themselves.” i didnt really take much from this other than the dude who reviewed it didnt see a specific post about something on the day he looked AND had some specfic criteria he thought blogs should meet.
this blog absolutely brings folks into the same place over a specific topic and isn’t that why we visit? either SiMA or CMoney once posted that coming in here during a game was like the virtual equivalent hanging out with your buddies watching the game. THAT is really what its all about to me.
there are plenty of places to go for team news and game recaps and all that, really. i’m here for the game threads and the informed takes of like-minded spurs fans on team-related topics. that’s not something I find so easily in other places 1000 miles away from south Texas.
Now, if i can only stop the beating i will take from BOTH SiMA and CMoney (wherever he went to).
Well, timbo did this last year too, and I thought it was interesting, if only as a talking point.

If I were to get started about blazers edge I would fall into an unholy rant that’s not worth anyone’s time…I’ll just say this. It doesn’t surprise in the least that blazers edge feels the need to go out and rate other blogs and then come back and tell themselves how much better then everyone else they are.

One may or may not disagree with timbo’s ratings, but he does them on his own. He is not affiliated with Blazers Edge. He even wrote that.
Personally, i think some of his Reviews are subjectively unmarginally weighed a little to much.

I know your not Bedge timbo. I like the conversations I’ve had with Timmay! and poorwebguy. I also thought it was supremely cool of section323 to share her and DTL’s trip to pheonix. So when I say blazers edge I do realize that may be unfairly generalizing. I like interacting with other fans (yourself included) but to be honest some of your stuff does have a hollyer then thou lean to it IMO, and blazers edge can tend lean the same way. That said BSoTS and Bedge have had their history, and that may be affecting my impartiality.

It is nice to get an outside opinion… as we’ve seen in the comments here, it’s generated a lot of good discussion about what we like about PTR and what we want out of PTR.
That being said, whoever did these reviews has a case of ‘cool kids table’ syndrome. Without visiting these sites every day for a good amount of time, there’s no way to compare them except to compare them with what you’re familiar with. So the reviews boil down to, “This blog is different from BlazersEdge in the following ways:”, and it’s never a favorable comparison.
What this guy wants out of an NBA blog, and what the community at BE wants out of an NBA blog, is definitely not what every community wants. I’ve just started to poke around in the other SBN sites, but one thing I’ve already noticed is how distinct each is in the content and tone.
The cerebral Xs and Os content that BE members love wouldn’t go over so well at the Denver or Orlando sites. Blazers fans would have no ability to enjoy the smack-talking, homerish cheer-leading that fills some SBN blogs. That doesn’t mean fan-friendly smack talk is any worse than in-depth egg-headed theorizing, and both can be done poorly or well.
I don’t mind a challenge to step our game up, but it’s going to be towards goals that make sense for Spurs fans, and so next year our review could be even worse. Worry about content and leave questions of style to the cool kids.
Not to put too fine of a point on it, but you can tell what he’s looking for in other blogs by reading the review of BE:
featuring long and thoughtful essays designed to provoke extended reader discussion…Deckard’s lengthy reviews and essays on the front page remain regular and thoughtful…but seemingly finding himself torn between the blog and his “real job” as a contributor of NBA content to CBSSports.com — last year’s essays have become this year’s mainpage FanShots…
Gimme a break. Is it an NBA community site or the Grand Salon in the Hôtel Grimod de La Reynière?

First, I want to thank LatinD for finding and posting this. I found the review to be interesting, I don’t agree completely, but it was interesting. Timbo did preface his review with the comments below.
" My free time being limited, I do not read more than a few of these blogs with any regularity, and so I may be wrong about this or that particular. Please don’t take anything here as gospel. This is the subjective list of one person, okay?"I must also admit I didn’t read his reviews on many of the other blogs. I have to agree with his comments; most of what we have during the season is previews and reviews. That is what I go to PtR for, what did others think of the game. The other reason I go to PtR is the in-game posting(?). Whatever you call all of us following the game and commenting during the game on what we see and what we want to have happen. I don’t agree with what everyone says, or their language. And others probably feel the same about what I post. I also look forward to Janieannie pictures of what happened at the home games. At different time of the year, different things are available. During the off-season, there are articles about what is happening with the team, information on the draft pick, new players and the summer league. Year round there are links to other blogs if they have posts related to the Spurs. PtR seems to be connected to all things Spurs.
The only thing we seem to be short on, according to Timbo is podcasts. OK, do we want more, I don’t know. I am not against them, but not having them isn’t at large drawback. PtR always has a link the ‘48’ whenever they have one, so….
Bottomline, PtR has what I am looking for. If we are not one of timbo’s leaders that is OK to me. Let’s keep doing what we are doing.
GO SPURS GO!!
I think one of the strengths of the PtR community is good writing. Even in the heat of a game, there are a lot of smart, often funny, comments. Having more podcasts would be fine and well, but it’s the written word that shines here.
A few posters use profanity. I tend not to, but I have absolutely no problem with it, and I think it’s good to just let people express themselves freely. (I mainly avoid cussing because I have chosen to use my actual name as my screen name, and I’m a teacher and know that I have students who also read Spurs blogs. So I need to watch my language!) But I rarely have ever sensed anyone being malicious, condescending, or mean on this site. Mostly it’s having fun, venting frustration, joking around with fellow readers/posters. I wouldn’t change that.
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
I was surprised that PtR wasn’t marked down for failure to use the Subject Line. All the really good blogs do, I’m sure.
48MOH is worth looking at once a day or so, and very easy to catch up on what’s being said.
On the other hand, I look at PtR numerous times per day and it isn’t easy to keep up with all the comments. Isn’t that what sponsors prefer?
Personally I pay more attention to the comments outside of game threads. During the game the comments come in faster than I can usually keep up with without losing track of the actual game. Many of those are just something like:“Maaaanuuu” or “Bonner wth?”. In a certain way it gives a bit of a feel to actually being at a game with other fans so I do try to follow them some but it is easy to fall behind due to the pace.
Another thing I also consider interesting. I’m a huge believer in Web 2.0 community sites. The more access the fans have to the site, the more I like it. My ideal is Digg, for instance. I bugged Wayne for a long time to add more writers, but jolly was the one that went ahead with it. I think it’s a good thing.
Is it enough? Ideally, I’d like to see a hundred people in the masthead. We all have works, and our free time increases and decreases like the tides. I’m really happy that once Wayne quit PTR and I got busy, Tim, Davis, Cap and jolly took over. Now Josh does so much, it’s incredible. But my experience tells me that sooner or later they might get tired, and someone else will have to step up. The more we are, the more evenly the effort of carrying a big blog is spread among the regulars. And there’s more content, which brings more readers, which creates a positive loop that leads to taking over the Internet.
Or something.
I’d like that.
I smell death... everywhere.

The point of reading this particular blog, at least the main point, is to read the thoughts of unabashed Spurs fans, and to have a forum to discuss the team and especially the games with fellow Spurs fans. I don’t necessarily come to Pounding the Rock for basketball expertise, although there are some very knowledgeable writers and commenters that I enjoy reading here. But the main attraction is the respectful but partisan enthusiasm. Maybe it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it fits for me.
PtR is a little like being in a sports bar watching the game with semi-raucous yet friendly and informed patrons. Without the booze.
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
PtR is a little like being in a sports bar watching the game with semi-raucous yet friendly and informed patrons.
This analogy has been used before and it perfectly fits the bill.
Also, I’ve read some of the reviews on blogs that got a star, and this one struck me in particular:
The Gameday Open Threads are a real joy to participate in, just the right size of crowd with a copious number of smartasses and a worship of site-specific memes.
Memes? Smartasses? PtR! Oh wait… it’s Silver Screen & Roll.
Not much to add that the people above me have said (especially Lauri — I love you to pieces), ’cept that I appreciate timbo for coming out with his annual review of blogs. It makes for good discussion and can only be helpful for sites still wanting to improve.
That being said, a message to timbo: there’s also some good “suggestions” said on here that you can take into account the next time you conduct your blog rundown, like, oh… I don’t know, maybe hanging out for a few days in each blog? If you want your blog reviews taken more seriously, that’s a great place to start — although I admit it’d take a lot of work and time. It’s done wonders for some of our non-Spurs fan regulars like 2NASHTY, olf and even WaveOcean.

I’m confused? Who cares what timbo thinks? I certainly don’t. He’s entitle to his opinion, but it doesn’t make it relevant to me.
I like PtR because I get lots of Spurs-related news as well as opinions from informed fans. The writing is good and it doesn’t all come from one or two writers (which seems to be the case at BlazersEdge), so I get a spectrum of pro-Spurs opinions. It suits me best, even more than 48MoH, which I enjoy but doesn’t have the variety or amount of content available here.

Where the hell have you been in the last two years? I want Stampler in this blog as much as any of you, but no one kicked him out. He left on his own. He left after telling Michael that this was his blog, talking about dildos up people’s asses and making a lot of lousy rape jokes and then messing around with Wayne and Matthew both in the posts for months. He was mad. I’m not judging him, but it’s the truth. SB Nation wanted to ban him, even. And believe me, I wasted lots of paragraphs defending him, even if you weren’t privy to them.
And this was after people donated so that he could dedicate his time to blogging. In fact, Wayne even offered to pay 1 dollar for every dollar that people donated, and did exactly that. I’m as excited as anyone else to see him blogging again? But why don’t you both get off your high horses and realize that to even have this blog you’re forced to accept a lot of sucky rules (many of which I despise), and that there’s always someone in the background answering for all the cussing when it makes it to the front page?
I love Stampler, but he’s not the victim.

Would you believe that I was only going to write the first paragraph, and then it kind of got away from me? Sorry.
I smell death... everywhere.

What’s up guys? Why all the fuss?
I don’t understand why everyone’s so stressed out about this review thingy that timba wrote. I haven’t read it myself, but my mom sent me some quotes she clipped from it and it’s not half bad.
Quote # 1: “the venerable Pounding the Rock” — apparently this is from the beginning of the post before the actual review, but venerable means “accorded a great deal of respect” and respect is still a good thing, unless I’m much mistaken.
Quote #2: “Top quality network blogs like this” — top quality things make me smile. In fact, quality is almost as good as value.
Quote # 3: “higher standard” — Stop it! I’m getting all embarrassed here. Being complimented is FUN!
Quote # 4: “PtR actually is not the worst” — This one isn’t terrifically positive (left-handed compliments rarely are) but anytime you’re not the worst, that means there’s always room slip further down the slide of unmet expectations into the deep dark pool of vaguely warm milk and mashed potatoes. Ummmm. Yummy!
Enjoying the trip to # 172 as much as humanly possible

I agree here. Honestly, I think he makes fair statements, except for the fact that, as others have stated, that comparing PTR to a blog such as 48MoH is problematic. 48 Minutes of Hell is a professional blog with the backing of ESPN with, as far as I can tell, a formal paid staff. They obviously do excellent work, and its success is a credit to its founders. However, all of us here have real lives and just volunteer our time here at different levels for the friendly, intelligent banter. We are what we are, and shouldn’t change a thing.
