So Russia is getting the 2018 World Cup and it looks like the 2022 WC will be held in Qatar, at least for now. FIFA has been getting reamed for all sorts of corruption recently. Of course that's not surprising, both Russia and Qatar have some immensely wealthy people and FIFA has lots of people that wish they were.
The other contenders for 2018 were England, Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal. Other 2022 contenders were the USA, Japan, South Korea and Australia. I, of course was hoping the US would get it, but I thought that it would be fairest for the Aussies to host, they have never had a WC and are a solid and viable option.
I guess Russia will be a good host, I don't know why they wouldn't be. I thought England might get it since they seem to have the stadiums and what not that Russia is supposedly lacking. I think that Japan and South Korea were doomed by having just held the WC in 2002. Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal were in tough spots since they'd be splitting the WC. From what I've heard FIFA was trying to avoid doing that again after 2002. Qatar just boggles my mind. That is the least stable region in the world, with the hottest summers and the worst infrastructure. I guess a lot can change in 11/12 years, but it's hard for me to see how that made sense.
Share your thoughts. Do you think FIFA is corrupt? Do you think that Russia and Qatar will be able to host good WC's? Are you disappointed that one of the other nations didn't win the bid?
