Here’s the deal- We all complain about refs deciding the game and putting their own imprint on events. There’s no hypocrisy here. With a play/call like that, you HAVE to blow the whistle, there’s just too much contact. The play itself was the deciding factor in the game, and it was without debate. It would have been egregious to ignore the call in this instance.

Maybe, but I’m tend to view the designation more as “Did you come up through the US system of basketball or through the World system?” If a US-born player moved to Europe as a kid and played in the European leagues before coming to the NBA, I’d view him more as a “foreign” player.

If we go with your definition, then I’d put Nash ahead of Dirk. He is Canadian.

I just noticed that WaveOcean posted my comment above over at DenverStiffs as PtR’s response to the message from them that he posted above.

First, I don’t speak for all of PtR. I speak for myself.
Second, my comment was not intended as a response to the DenverStiffs message; I wrote it to say that I felt that anger towards opposing fans is misplaced when it’s the players who make things happen or not happen… and when the Spurs lose because they’re not playing well, it makes more sense to me to be mad at the players. I don’t understand why WaveOcean reposted my comment over there, because I had already stated that I felt there was no point in trying to convince them to agree with me.
Third, I am very angry with WaveOcean for taking my comments, posting it over at DenverStiffs out of context, and likely escalating their anger.

WaveOcean, if you ever pull a stunt like this again, I will use my limited powers here to delete your posts and do my best to get you banned.

Case in point — if the Spurs lost tonight, I would have been mad about the inbounds turnover, Hill’s offensive foul on Smith, the poor 1st quarter play, a ton of mental mistakes on defense, and all the other ‘gifts’ the Spurs gave the Nuggets… and yes, probably also about the refs for all the bad calls they made, but I wouldn’t have attributed the loss solely to a single bad call at the end of the game. And there would have been no point to get mad at Denver fans. It was the Spurs’ players’ game to win or lose.

He appears to be that weird “nice” troll. He will quote some other fan and then say, “Not my words… someone else’s.” Sure he might not have said it, but we’re not trying to troll Denver fans and posting our comments on their site is adding fuel to the fire.

by Jordan Leithart on Dec 17, 2010 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

I actually have some sympathy for WaveOcean. His team got LeBron’d, and he’s hurting. Watching the Cavs isn’t fun for him anymore, so he’s going to multiple SB fan blogs for… something. Something that LeBron took away from Cavs fans.

Problem is, cross-posting game thread and post-game comments between opposing teams isn’t going to win him many friends on either side. I think he’s figured it out, the Stiffs were less…. restrained about calling him a troll.

Also didn’t get to watch, but…

MANU = My. Mind. Is. Blown.

Had a look at the Denver SBN blog. Not pretty. Losing hurts, losing on a call that might be debatable hurts… ..but, your team losing and you can’t show any class, that really sucks.

PtR has really confirmed me in my Spur-ness. Fans with class, wit and sense, you guys reflect the team we support.

Kiwi, thanks for feeling at home here, but let’s not judge our Denver Stiffs brethren from one thread after a particularly tough loss.

I’ve seen some stuff posted to PtR following a defeat that I wasn’t particularly proud of. That’s all.

Anything that you can reference, that was openly tolerated by the remaining bulk of the blog? I think that’s what Kiwi’s getting at- that even when it does happen here it’s roundly and quickly condemned. A reaction you don’t typically see with as much respect and class as you do here.

That’s a point I won’t argue. We DO try to stop that kind of thing right away. I didn’t visit the DS link in question, so I’m not able to comment on how they reacted.

Also, it’s probably best to leave me in my ignorance. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for making me feel at home. I’ve lurked for a fair while on and off, and it’s the consistent tone and atmosphere of this site (PtR) that made me decide to register and post.

Moving away from specifics about Denver and Denver fans, I guess my reaction is that I just don’t see that kind of hostile, personal, hate-filled response to a tough loss as the way a fan of the game reacts. To me those posters came across as Denver fans, not as basketball fans who happen to support the Denver Nuggets.

I didn’t get to see the game, so I can’t comment on the officiating as a whole, but it seems that it was fairly even over the game as a whole. So the result wasn’t really down to that one call alone. Like in any game, there will have been many plays that the losing team could have executed better, that would have meant that one ‘bad’ call would not have been what decided things.

So unless there was a pattern of consistently biased calls, or a lot of cheating by one team or one player, that made a win into a loss, to react in such a way to me shows that you’re reacting emotionally and not from an understanding of the game of basketball. You’re looking for someone outside your team to vent your frustrations on, rather than getting annoyed about the way player X on your team didn’t defend, or player Y on your team ball-hogged and stifled the offense, or that the coach had a poor gameplan…

My team is never wrong, never plays poorly and if we lose, we wuz robbed!”

That kind of attitude to me seems the antithesis of the Spurs, PtR and the posters here, and it’s why I love this site, and the Spurs.

Actually S-Kiwi, I believe that ’Melo’s charge was the only one that was whistled on the Nuggets. The TNT color analyst showed at least one offensive clear-out foul that Nene got away with (he had several), as well as a loose ball that Denver knocked out but was attributed to San Antonio. There were also a number of 50-50 plays (mostly charges) that could have gone either way that went to the Nuggets (home team advantage, we figured).

Frankly, I was holding my breath thinking that they called a blocking foul on Manu the way the refs had been calling the game. I was stunned that they made the right call, even though you’d think that ‘Melo would’ve gotten the call if they weren’t absolutely sure. That’s one of the reasons I was sure the refs must have felt it was an egregious and obvious charge, even before I saw the replay.

And you’re right. Attributing the loss to one call by the refs misses the big picture. There were plenty of mistakes that the Nuggets players had made that could have changed the outcome of the game; the same was true for the Spurs players, had they lost the game (say, if ’Melo had made the smart play and pulled up for the jumper or dished it off to an open teammate).

Hey, if posting a sharp, insightful, yet non-sarcastic comment were that easy, even olf would do it.

I have to tell you how much it means to me that you feel this way about PtR. It’s all I could ask for. I can’t take credit for it, because it’s the work of an entire community to make this site what it is. But I can tell you that it’s the same way that I feel about it.

Thanks.

yes, it’s the PtR community as a whole, but the tone gets set at the top, jrw. Just like on the Spurs. Kudos.
