Once again, the Spurs win every quarter on their way to a double-digit victory. But this time, they fall short of 100 pts.
Ah well. =]
RJ2.0: vive la différence.
I really enjoy this team. They fall short of 100 because they only shoot 43% (some normal open look makes just wouldn’t fall) yet still win by 17. This against a team that caused the Spurs some execution issues on both ends last season.
Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!

Blazers had a pretty good gameplan going in. They know Spurs cannot hit threes so just leave people open there and everyone collapse in. Especially do not worry about the corner three.

great point. that’s how they kept the Spurs under 100. they just concentrated on stopping mighty Spurs’ bigs from having a great offensive game and mostly ignored the weak backcourt.

How many games did Simmons have us winning? 50?
I have flying monkeys at my disposal, and I'm not afraid to use them.
I think 49 as a sixth seed. He then updated his rankings and elevated us to 50 wins and a fifth seed. At least he’ll openly gush over Duncan when he wins #5 this season.. And admit that he like all media people underestimated our guys. Again.

We won? We won!
So we can win when Bonner doesn’t make 5 threes? Good to know.
I smell death... everywhere.
Okay so all the Spurs had a positive or zero plus/ minus and all the Blazers had a negative one. Does that happen very often?
Such utter domination of another team is rare, but it happens. I remembered one such box-score from earlier this season, but forgot which game it was… checked, and it turns out to be the game against the Cavs.
There have been games this season that have had all but one Spur with a positive ± and all but one opposing player with a negative one; the most recent example being the game against the Hawks. Oddly, Manu was the Spur with the negative ±.

This team is truly deep. Nobody’s slumping and all our rookies are panning out. There are a lot of killer combinations for Pop to play with.
Manu was pretty bad against the Hawks. Actually, the whole team was playing pretty bad for like 44 minutes or so. Then we just threw the Hawks out of our building and called it a day. It was a very impressive win if you take into account how bad the team looked for the most of the night.
"Ginobili’s play grants the Spurs real, transformational power" - NY Times, Dec 2010
Watching this game in the arena, Manu did not look like a guy who is in a slump. He shot 50% tonight and had fewer turnovers (three is about normal for him with those unpredictable passes). Right now the rest of the team is playing so well that he doesn’t need to put them on his back like earlier in the season. Also, he hasn’t been needed to do his “fourth quarter magic” in the last few games.

To further show the drop, from November to December (5 games so far):
-He’s averaging 8 ppg less (21.8 vs. 13.8)
-Shooting 14.5 points less in fg% (49.1 vs. 34.6)
-Shooting 18.3 points less in 3pt% (41.4 vs. 23.1)
He might not have struggled as much in this game, but he has been slumping
slightly. Luckily, others like Hill are surging (and Parker has re-discovered his touch).
It’s good he’s getting to average less minutes though and that should help cut down on the fatigue factor, especially as Hill is able to carry some of the scoring load.
When Tony was nursing his hand briefly, I was thinking about George being in charge of the offense if Tony had to miss some games. George did a real nice job of scoring this game, but he’s looking more and more like a shooting guard and much less of a point guard.
He does, but a much more improved SG than last season’s. He’s slashing more and I’d say he’s back to his free throw-baiting self back when he was a rook. I doubt he’d ever be a true PG, but if Pop continues to play him alongside Tony or Manu for stretches, Hill will be alright.

All three our main guards play like combo guards, so each two can play very well with each other. And Hill seems to be good enough of a PG to run a second unit without Manu and Tony.

Portland’s currently in the 8th seed spot with Phoenix, Memphis and Houston chasing them. With Greg Oden being out for the year (again), it seems likely they miss the playoffs. They used to look like a young and up & coming team; they’re now looking rather old and often injured. I’d think they’re likely to go back into rebuilding mode and trade off some players before the trade deadline.

Despite D-Rose’s and Deng’s improved strokes and Korver’s presence, I still think they lack another shooter. Their big men are alright, though.

I say four teams for each conference: add to your list the Bulls from the East, and the Jazz from the West.

"Give me an army of West Point graduates, and I'll win a battle. Give me a handful of Texas Aggies, and I'll win a war." -Gen. George S. Patton
I like the Jazz a lot. I just have a hard time picturing them beating say the Lakers in a seven game series. (Maybe I have a hard time picturing the Spurs doing this also, at this point. But we have championship experience, size, and depth, things I don’t see with the Bulls or Jazz.)
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
Can the Mavs beat the Lakers in a 7-game series? Somehow I cannot see this happening this postseason unless something pretty drastic happens.

The good thing about LA is they have Odom to counter Dirk, but Dallas doesn’t have anybody to effectively limit Gasol. Artest will also have a field day destroying Butler’s psyche.

Chicago over Orlando.
I’d say there are two tiers. Top tier: Spurs and Lakers in the WC, Celtics in the EC. Second tier: Mavs and Jazz in the WC. Heat, Bulls and Magic in the EC.
Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
‘cept Lakers have been really stinky so far. Or at least they’ve been two teams – the one that started 8-0 and the one that’s gone 9-7 since.
Going on record, the ‘top tier’ is Spurs Celtics and Dallas. By point differential, Spurs Celtics and Miami. The Lakers are right beneath those three, no matter how you slice it, but they’re also benefiting from the second easiest schedule to date.
I wanna see how the Lakers do come late January, early Feb. when their schedule catches up to them.
The Knicks have had the easiest schedule. I don’t think they’re legit at all.
The Lakers will be all right. I don’t see this team collapsing on Phil’s and Kobe’s watch. Schedule doesn’t matter for the championship caliber teams. If they play well, they can beat anybody. If they are in a funk, like recently, they can lose half of their games. It’s way too early for the Lakers to panic, as well as way too early to discount Miami. Playoffs are not staring on Christmas Day.

But the Lakers and Heat are squaring off on Christmas Day!
But seriously, I agree with you. The ‘chip goes through the Lakers come playoff time. At some point though, I figure luck won’t always be at their side, and that starts with continuously riding Gasol. Although he’s in his prime, big men are more prone to injury and fatigue than guards, so PJ better know what he’s doing trying to milk Gasol for heavy minutes.

Those tiers are based one what is, what will likely be after 82, and the reality of who can win a best of seven. Mavs are 1-5 in their last six playoff series despite winning 50+ games every season. They’re also an older team with their key players and ride Dirk for most of their success. They’re not in the top tier of the Spurs or Lakers while being a legit threat to both, much like the Jazz and perhaps Thunder.
Lakers will be fine overall but the schedule gets much tougher starting with Christmas Day. They’ve yet to play the Spurs, Mavs, Hornets or Thunder. This scheduling fact combined with the minutes being played by Gasol and the age of Kobe, Odom and Fisher tells me that they will fall short of the #1 seed & 60 wins that most experts expected, yet will still be a top 3 seed that will be an incredibly tough out in the second round and beyond. If the Mavs and LAL played in a seven game series, on which team would you bet?

I think in the East it’s more about matchups than actual talent. For instance- The Heat can beat the Magic (IMO), but the Heat cant beat Boston. Boston would have a tough time with either Orlando or Chicago.
To me, the Bucks and Bulls are the wildcards in the east. If the Bucks can get rolling like they were last year, I think they can beat anyone in the conference. Last year, Bogut was the best all around big in the league- no contest. With Jennings, Maggette, Salmons, and Bogut, they’ve got the potential to be great. Skiles is a good coach with a rep for pushing players hard- and as long as they buy in, they do well. He even got a good year or two out of Gooden back in Chicago.

That is one of the most memorable things I have ever heard from Duncan. Great quote.

this makes me borderline weepy. The only person’s retirement who has actually brought tears to my eyes was Emmitt Smith’s. Duncan will probably do the same.
Great players come frequently. Classy players come every now and then. Those who have both come roughly once in a lifetime. We’ve been so blessed to have our giant Wizard for so long.

Don’t look now but the Hornets lost to the Sixers. I image it’s looking mighty unstable in NO right now.
Who was it that was saying Nuggets fans were, um, intelligence challenged? I just wandered over to the Bronco’s blog and their fans are pretty bad. Insults, infighting, ridiculous demands, the works. Is it Colorado or just coincidence?
Lauri: thank goodness I have you magnificent bastards to waste [the offseason] with.
Hey everyone! Great win. Another good sports day for me. My Bears got annihilated by the Patriots today. This weather here in Chi-town is absolutely absurd! Honestly, I cannot say I’m very surprised by this. I’d have bet on NE too. But, atleast the Packers lost… to the Lions! Didn’t see that one coming. But, atleast the Spurs won. All is well.
Aaron Rodgers got hurt, that is why. He may be held out next game too as I think he suffered another concussion. Hate to see that, I like Rodgers, super guy. Packers brought it on themselves by not fixing the OL last couple of years and letting Rodgers be a punching bag every single game.

I’d love to see a GIF of Przybilla’s takedowns on Tony and Blair. The white haired lady behind me was calling him a “mugger” and said he’d better not meet her in the parking lot after the game!

Honestly they were not as bad as they looked at first glance. First one looked like Przkryskbyeyyalla just is not coordinated enough to defend properly, and second one was really Blair holding on to the ball and forcing Przybilla down.
Lauri: thank goodness I have you magnificent bastards to waste [the offseason] with.
The replay in the arena showed him grabbing Blair’s jersey and throwing him down – snapped DJ’s neck. DeJuan took a long time to go to the line, waiting hear mid-court and flexing his neck, with his buddy Hill comforting him and his mentor McDyess also giving him reassurance – that was a good team thing to see.

Gheorghe Muresan Joel Fershizzla just lacks some mobility, lateral movement, quickness, coordination and occasional jock droppage.

For you, Josh. From Tim Griffin of Spurs Nation:
We were kidding in the chat during the game wondering when we might see a FreeTiago.com website pop up. Splitter was limited to only 3:33 of game action — and all of his playing time came at the end. It marked the second consecutive game where his playing time was low after playing only 1:04 in the game against Atlanta. Sunday’s game seemingly was an ideal game to put him in against Portland’s big inside players. But Popovich decided to go with other players — even inserting Duncan back into the game. It looks like Splitter’s role on the team will be as a gigantic insurance policy in case fatigue or injuries should strike any of the other Spurs’ big players.

It appears Pop is bringing Splitter along at the pace of understanding, 180 from last year with Jefferson.

The Knicks have won 13 of theyre last 14 games.=o0
I sh!t you not, go look if you dont believe me. Granted they have all been against patsies except for the win against the suddenly crappy Nooch and against the Hollinger 10th ranked Nuggets last night.
