I'm sure I can't be the only one here who is terrified by the prospect of this team. I've been following the Spurs since just after they drafted Duncan and just before the lockout of '98 (that's a little bit of Ethos thrown out there). Unfortunately for me, I haven't been able to watch the Spurs until last year, cause of moving out of the house and finally getting a place where I can get satellite up here in the cold Pacific Northwest. I watched my Spurs "fail" to a lowly 50 win total for the season. I raged (pun intended) at Princess Peanut nearly every game, and watched as Parker and Ginobili seemed to fall to the injury bug over and over again. Everything just seemed to go so wrong for the team last year, and I thought we would end up as a playoff team that just waited to be swept by the Suns' liberal use of small forwards and the mid-range shot year after year. This year opened with a win for the goodies. And then we lost to the Hornets. Immediately I thought, "This team can't contend. We won't be able to beat the Lakers." And then that double-digit win steak happened. And now I'm scared. I'm scared to root for this team with my heart and soul like I used to. When I did last year (didn't miss watching a game), I would get in a horrible funk when the team lost. And when we got swept by the Suns, I woke up with the worst hangover. Now, I am terrified that the moment I start putting my all into this team, they'll start losing.
Say what you will about superstition, but I don't wash my Duncan jersey until they lose a game. And I'm pretty sure that if I start caring too much like I did last year, the Spurs will go into a funk, Manu will suddenly lose both knees and Parker will get involved with a Kardashian.
In short, I'm scared to really root for these Spurs because I always thought that November didn't mean anything. I'm scared because I still feel like we haven't been truly tested. But most of all, I'm scared that they're actually good and the thought of how much joy I would get if we took it all in June terrifies me. Go Spurs Go!
