There WILL be regression to the mean… it’s only a matter of time, and praying it doesn’t hurt too bad.

by DrumsInTheDeep on Nov 7, 2010 6:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Ahhh, but where is the mean? One could well imagine that RJ 2.0 thus far in the season is pulling up his averages from last season up to his true mean.

I truly believe now that he can pose matchup nightmare that some teams won’t have an answer for, but I also think that, as teams around the league adjust to the idea of a “Fantastic Four” instead of a “Big Three” in Silver and Black, he’ll see fewer easy looks. I didn’t watch the game last night (yet), but I’ll bet that Battier played him pretty closely.

Still, Jefferson has been active, knows what he’s supposed to do and especially where he’s supposed to be, and those are good things. An active RJ can disrupt and break down defenses without the ball and with pass-happy teammates creating ball movement to further confuse defenses, well, let’s just say I expect to see a lot more easy baskets this year from mismatches and open looks created by all that activity on offense. A Pop-style motion offense, if you well.

And on the other side of the ball, an active RJ will be a pest, hawk the passing lanes, have a hand in his man’s face, etc. Add to that diving for loose balls and fast break offense/transition defense. I’m predicting he’ll do all those things even in games that he isn’t shooting well. (I have to predict that, because he hasn’t yet had a game like that this season.)

I guess what I’m saying is that, even as opposing teams adjust (or regression to the mean comes into play), RJ 2.0 will be doing a lot of things to help the team, and be a vast improvement over last year’s version. I’m excited, because I think it’s more significant than any team personnel change in the Western Conference.

What I mean to say is that I don’t think his slightly lower FG% is indicative of a regression to the mean effect. I think it’s a Shane Battier effect. I’m certain Bats knew all about RJ 2.0’s recent performance (especially after that 18-point 4th quarter in Phoenix), and was determined to shut him down. I guess if you call can holding someone to 61.5% shooting shutting ’em down, lol.

First of all, I didn’t watch the game live. Consider it my penance/sacrifice to the mojo gods for angering them… I wrote that the Rockets were 0-5 prematurely, and several PtR’rs seemed to have picked it up and repeated it.

(Actually, I was busy with my puppy and dinner, and didn’t get back to the game until the Spurs were walking back into their locker room. I caught a glimpse when the Spurs were up by 10 or so in the third.)

I will say that it seems to have been an ugly game, so I’m bracing myself. For the Spurs to let another team back into the game after going up double digits in the third is almost inexcusable. First half FG% by the Rockets indicates awful D, and allowing them three three-point attempts in the closing seconds of OT? Are you kidding me?

Still, a win is a win. And good teams don’t win pretty all the time, ugly wins are part of the deal. I’d just like to see some decisive, easy wins, so that our senior citizens don’t have to rack up the minutes during the regular season.

And Rockets only shot 45% so there are some things that look a bit better.

Oh crap, Yahoo didn’t update it. Should have just stuck with NBA.com. It’s actually 47.5 it ended at for Houston. So far Phoenix is their best game. The Clippers game was slightly better at 46.3.

All sad…

by grego21 on Nov 7, 2010 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, as bad as it was, this should make everyone feel slightly better.

The Spurs looked like they were lapsing into the defensive doldrums that have marked the early part of the season after allowing Houston to shoot 68.4 percent in the first quarter. But they bounced back to permit the Rockets to shoot only 30.4 in the second quarter and a collective 42.5 percent (34 of 80) during the rest of the game.

Very very nice cap. I love the roll call! I caught the end of the 3rd on the new League Pass that I coughed up the bread for tonight. As stated before, the free preview is like crack. Mission accomplished Stern. You win.

I saw the nice 11 point lead at end of the 3rd, and foolishly thought – once again- we were cruising to victory. As usual, I was wrong. Honestly, what a GREAT first game to watch on League Pass. Exciting. I broke my own world high jump record when Manu hit that shot, and topped it when Tim hit his, and cursed outloud when he clanked that free throw. (My girlfriend, on the couch, shot a glare.) But the Spurs eeked it out. Onto Charlotte.

What’s interesting to note is that the Jazz-Clippers game went to double overtime and they still didn’t score as many points as the Spurs-Rockets did. The offense is ridiculous! I don’t know how long we will be able to keep up this streak of scoring and winning if we don’t start playing better defense.

Still, this is the kind of nail-biting game the Spurs would have lost last year. At least the team is winning games.

This season is so strange. I know, I know, we aren’t even 10 games into the season yet. However I am honestly surprised by the results so far: Rockets at 0-5? Phoenix 2-3? And what is Golden State trying to pull with a 4-1 record? There are still many more games to be played but I honestly didn’t think the opening season would open so differently from last year.

by grego21 on Nov 7, 2010 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe just like 2 years ago we had a bad start, hmmm 0-3 or something then we still pulled a 54-26 record then yeah got kicked by Dall-ass.Our defense showed up where we needed it the most, but it needs to be tighten up.GSW,they have nice pieces but they won’t ride it for too long if they won’t play defense but they got a shot for an 8th seed, and NOLA,with the pieces that they have,I’m not surprised. They might even end up in the top 4 honestly(hate it).I think the west is going to be a tough conference to ride. This is going to be the survival of the fittest.Hou’s is still an enigma,I mean they got pieces but why are they 0-5?Well Yao is hurt and is just played through chosen games or in limited minutes,Aaron just got hurt so as Martin.I don’t know, but I think they might take a run for that 8th seed but end up again not going to the playoffs…again.I think Yao has little hate for Kobe since he did bumped Ming’s knee in that 08-09 playoff game.Phx,like Hou might have that run but end up not going to the playoffs,it means GSW might have that chance and another non-playoff team last year…hmmm who would it be?
This is definitely a strange season, unprecedented it is.

I think Yao’s 24-minute timer could be screwing up the Rockets. It shouldn’t be… even if he was fully healthy, he would play the full game, but knowing that he won’t be playing in crunch time could be screwing things up.

Adelman might look at what the Spurs do and consider not starting Ming and play him in the 4th. We start Blair, but McDyess finishes games for us (and quite well).

Yep. Especially that little stretch near the end where they kept passing the ball around forever, and I don’t mean in a classic Spurs perimeter ball movement sense. It was more like panicky passing and I kept expecting a turnover.
But I will take the ugly win over a pretty loss :-).

I think the lower FG% in the later quarters was deceiving. The Rockets missed a ton of open shots, particularly those corner threes. The team’s rotations were pretty awful.

Anderson was missed. Pop seems to refuse to play Gee, so Manu was the SF when Jefferson rested. With the game going overtime, both had to play over 39 minutes.

Sean Elliot commented a number of times with Tiago in the game how he was already winded and that he’s just now getting his training camp. It would seem the best way at this point to get into game shape as to play more minutes in game, but apparently the game stayed too close to be leaving in a worn out Tiago. It seems like Sean blamed Tiago’s missed shot on him being out of breath.

by Alamo on Nov 7, 2010 9:31 AM CST reply actions

The goal is to get the team used to these situations. Gee will be a Toro soon. He might bring something nice, but if anyone should have played, it should have been Temple, unless he’s going to the Toros as well. Neal also got more play at times with the missing Anderson.

Anyone have thoughts on Gary Neal’s shot selection? While it seems good that he has confidence in his shots, I couldn’t decide whether he was at times a little too quick to take a shot vs. looking for a teammate that had an even better shot. While watching the game, it didn’t seem he shot any particularly bad shots, despite being 2-9. Looking back over the play-by-play account, the majority of his shots looked late enough in the shot clock and the others seemed appropriate for the game situation. During the time he went 2-6 at the start of the 2nd qtr, Manu was also going 0-5. Blair and Hill were in the game at the same time, so I suppose the Spurs were looking for Neal to be the offense at the time.

Apparently, Brooks’ “sprain” will keep him out of the lineup for 4-6 weeks. Ouch. That’s a heck of a sprain.

It also means that it’ll give Houston’s game announcers a month or more to continue to whine and bash Manu. Sigh. By the time the Spurs visit the Rockets, the level of Manu-hate by Houston fans could get scary.

Then again, it could work to our advantage. Eff it, I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict that Manu will channel all that negative energy directed at him and break Rockets’ fans hearts all over again. It is, after all, who he is… and what he does. :)
