Just looking at that boxscore… Wow! Great offensive game. Timmy 11-13, RJ 9-13 (4-5 3PT).
Defensively… Uhm.

Like I said in the game thread, anyone who’s be saying (or even thinking) that Timmy is too old and/or doubted RJ would be better after his hard work this summer should watch this game again. Seriously.

Three straight triples from the corner by RJ in the fourth quarter took the Spurs from down 3 to up 6. It might have been four straight from the same spot, if Timmy hadn’t gotten the ball stolen from him when he was trying to pass it out to RAGE again (in the same spot). As it was, he made another trey a little while later. I think the Spurs may have found a the guy to occupy Bruce Bowen’s old corner office. :)

love this win for us!
1 quality win against a team that was a match up problem for us
2 Timmy comes to life for his first really good game even though he had to many turnovers
3 not only does Jefferson have his 4 really good game in a row its his best and he came through in the end when it mattered

before that triple, he made three straight treys from Bruce’s old ‘corner office’ bringing the Spurs back from 3 down to 6 up. A 9-0 run all by himself… well, nearly. Gotta give credit to the guys who saw that he was open and passed it out to him.

by freshtunarightofftheboat on Nov 3, 2010 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

before that triple, he made three straight treys

Then Tony, Manu and company froze him out for the next seven plays. The hottest player on the floor literally did not touch the ball for 3+ minutes. The Spurs were 0-3 with four turnovers during that stretch, transforming a 6 point lead into a 3 point deficit. At this point RJ realized that in the Spurs system, making consecutive threes is considered “showing off” and cause for punishment. Duly chastened, he made sure to shuffle his feet and get called for traveling when he finally did touch the ball, contributing to team unity by bringing himself down to their level of incompetence. But then Pop screamed at him so RJ scored our next 5 points and all was well.

Despite the freeze-out, RJ scored 14 of our last 18 points. In the 4th quarter he was 6-6 from the field (4-4 from the arc) and 2-2 from the line.

by doggydogworld on Nov 4, 2010 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually, it looked to me that Duncan was trying to pass it out from beneath the basket to an open RJ 2.0 in the corner in the time between Rage’s third and fourth triple, but unfortunately he was triple?-teamed and Phoenix stripped away the ball.

You’re suggesting that the Big Three have egos that care more about not ‘showing off’ than about winning…. I doubt they really think that way.

Hill may have learned something from last year’s experience.

Despite Nash’s shooting woes tonight, Temple still managed to get schooled by him.

Right now, I’d play a healthy Hill ahead of Temple, even against Phoenix.

I actually thought Temple did really well at cutting off Nash’s inside passing lanes. Went Nash sent him into a screen, however…

by Tim C. on Nov 4, 2010 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. Temple held his ground a lot more consistently than Hill did last season. However, Temple doesn’t have the luxury of getting a lot of consistent play time, sadly.

Hill last post season used his hands and grabbed which caused him to pick up fouls. Temple used his body positioning better to avoid those fouls which Parker was picking up (like Hill did last post season).

Hopefully that will get him going. Anderson and Splitter both made solid contributions. A really nice early road win, against a dastardly foe v

Splitter appears to be quite able to handle the NBA-game. Well done, sir!

'Offensive rebounding' is a gross understatement of DeJuan Blair's skill. It is far beyond 'offensive' and should be qualified as 'Get The Hell Out of My Way Or I'll Tear Your Arms Off and Eat Your Babies' rebounding.

Perfect example of the difficulties in using +/- to determine how someone plays: Blair was +9 and RJ was +8. Doesn’t seem fair to me.

Usually you need to carry in a per score or efficiency score along with that to help tie it all together. But nothing can replace being able to see the game.

by grego21 on Nov 4, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

True, but the popcornmachine.net site that greyberger turned us onto in a recent FanPost is sometimes even better than just watching the game. It proved to me where +/- doesn’t adequately capture what’s really going on. I use it to figure out which players are on the floor during extended runs (both for and against the team) and it’s made me rethink some assumptions I had just from watching the games and looking at the box scores afterwards. It’s a very powerful tool.

even more interesting, i had -1 on the spurs. rage probably, maybe, might have, could have, possibly, theoretically won it for me.

but i didnt see it, so it didnt happen. for all i know we were up five and nash threw a full court heave with 0.3 to go. ignorance IS bliss.

Also, I’m not sure I understand why Neal played so few minutes… was it because Pop was concerned that J.Rich would light him up, and therefore decided to play Temple instead? Or because the game was so tight and he needed Parker and Ginobili to log heavy minutes? Anyone know?

In this case, it actually followed what could have been predicted to some degree.

by grego21 on Nov 4, 2010 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Without Hill, Neal loses some luster when Pop is thinking defense.

Temple is the defensive guard and also got extra time because Parker was in foul trouble. Manu took on the majority of Hill’s ball distribution duties though.

Honestly, the Suns played defense on Neal well when he was off the ball. They know what he can do. I think that’s partly why his stay was short timed. He got off a shot or two, but Suns made sure he didn’t see daylight, which was smart.

Spurs tried to stay bigger with Temple/Anderson/RJ/Manu aside from Parker.

by grego21 on Nov 4, 2010 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Also, keep in mind that Gentry is more defensive oriented and Neal just went off as well. He’s in there to shoot.

by freshtunarightofftheboat on Nov 4, 2010 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

OK, I got some things right and some wrong.

The bad stuff first:

  • I expected our bench to outplay theirs, but we were outscored 45-26. But in my defense, Warrick’s 19 points and 31:20 minutes on the floor makes him more of a starter than Turkey-Glue’s 6 pts. and 16:40; also, I expected Neal to be more of a factor off the bench.
  • I was worried about Frye and Dragic, but they only combined for 11 points. And Childress added only 6 points and 2 rebounds.
  • DeBeast didn’t have his breakout game (and he’s due).
  • I suggested that Manu might best be the backup PG tonight, because of Hill’s injury, but he started anyway. That said, he had much of the ball-handling duties when Parker was resting.

The good stuff:

  • I predicted back in the off-season that an aggressive RJ (I’ve been calling him RJ 2.0) could well be a match-up nightmare for some teams to defend. Tonight’s RJ was that guy.
  • I suggested that Phoenix might regret not re-signing Amundson, and I think his disruptive energy could’ve helped the Suns.
  • I wasn’t too worried about the Suns mid-range jumpers and the shot charts seem to bear me out. It could’ve been our defense, or just the way the ball bounced. Not sure if I was just lucky or if the Spurs defense played a major role.

I would say a healthy Bonner and Hill would have bolstered the bench.

Also, even though it doesn’t show in the numbers, McDyess was great. Tiago, in his 2nd game was good, especially for a second game.

And Temple actually wasn’t that bad. He still got beat a few times, but he stayed with Nash fairly well and didn’t pick up the touch fouls which Parker and Hill (playoffs) picked up while playing him. A few times he went under the screen and got killed though.

by grego21 on Nov 4, 2010 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

In the stretches when Temple was on the floor, the Suns reeled off runs of 5-0, 12-3, 5-0 again, 13-4, 8-4, and 6-1 against the Spurs. His units had no runs against the Suns. His +/-, understandably, was a team-low -12.

Now, defense is a team deal, and it’s certainly unfair to assign all the responsibility for those Suns runs to one player. But it looked to me that Temple wasn’t able to stop Nash on a night when Nash wasn’t shooting particularly well, and given that he was playing instead of Neal for his better defense, I think it might’ve been worth giving Neal a try.

In Temple’s defense, when he played with Duncan, he did better on Nash. He did get killed by Goran as well. But no one could stop him. I’m almost sure that most of his -12 came against Dragic.

by grego21 on Nov 4, 2010 2:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Nope. It was slightly more Dragic than Nash, but both led monster runs against units of which Temple was a part.

Oh yeah, our second unit was tagged with a 12-3 run against them at the beginning of the 2nd quarter by the Suns’ second unit. Our starters, otoh, put a 17-4 run against the Suns’ starter at the beginning of the 3rd quarter that should have been decisive. It wasn’t, partly due to some Phoenix runs that were against some two-starter/three-bench units, so it took that 8-0 run by the Fantastic Four plus Dice late in the 4th to win the game.

Interestingly, the popcornmachine’s gameflow chart doesn’t show the 9-2 run in which RJ made three straight triples.

Damn RJ just put a smile on my face and the last three that he had to give as the lead,I just know it was going in.And tony had +10 in the box score but I can say he played atrocious defense and on offense he had some questionable shots.I think we really need to improve our D and Timmeh is back, now it is up for Blair to stop over doing things and go back to the ‘09-’10 Blair. And let’s just hope GHill can rust it off after 10 games after his injury, the pre-season and 2 games in the reg season wasn’t that good. And for RJ,keep it up,Neal will be a better is not going to be Mason and JA is someone to be proud of in the defensive end of the court and he sure does can shoot it.Tiago is very good at hustling but I can see his stroke in the FT line and yeah it’s so Spurs like, well if he kinda adjust himself with the game and get accustomed to it by 30 games or after all-star break then he can surely help cause I’ve seen 2 or 3 plays where he kinda wanders or just standing there in the offensive end,not much PnR action with him.Overall we had a hell of a game, let’s admit it RJ bailed us out,our bench was outplayed but I guess that not much though,Warrick was ala Apostrophe and nash despite the 8-22,I kinda feel that Tony’s defense wasn’t enough and thank God Temple played some nice D against Nash and(I guess we need a new Bruce-esque ’cause they are making a new Nash) Goran was there to eat us alive, nice D on JRich by Manu.I guess what we lack right now is defense and needs to be tighten up and some of our guys back into their old or much improve form then we can surely ball with anybody in the league.Nice win.Gotta thank the peanut man.

by bones on Nov 4, 2010 10:22 AM CDT reply actions

While Tiago hasn’t quite earned a starting spot, Blair seems to be losing his. Though I’d consider leaving Blair in if Charlotte were next, I think Houston might cause problems if he were in. McDyess has perhaps earned the starter’s role, but I think the Spurs are better off with him coming off the bench. Since Yao will be playing limited minutes as well, I think I’d go ahead and give Tiago the start and have him in the game whenever Yao is in the game.

by Alamo on Nov 4, 2010 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions

I think its too early to pull Blair. Give him a full 10-15 games before you start evaluating. Remember, most of his minutes last year came against backups, the kid is just 21, and he’s still adjusting. Give him time and see what happens.

by SpursfanSteve on Nov 4, 2010 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Blair had a nice first quarter against Houston in the first exhibition game with about 8 points and 4 rebounds. Later on he had consecutive shots blocked by Yao. It’s likely easier to make adjustments to a 6’7" center as an opponent than a 7’4" center. Blair is not going to adjust his height, but it might boost his confidence if he has a good game against Houston’s backups.
