Standings and rankings don’t really matter so much in the beginning of the season, but with losing today, the Hornets dropped to 5th in the West.
"Rip it and grip it!" -Kevin Costner
Just prior to last year’s playoffs a friend passed on an article talking about how the NBA Season was way too long and that things were pretty much determine after 16 games, the length of the NFL regular season. This had been written about this time last year, and the standings after 16 games looked eerily like the playoff seedings. Other than Orlando being upset by the Celtics, he had otherwise given the Lakers an edge in the finals despite having a slightly lower winning percentage due to Gaso being out for a few of the first 16 games.
Seems unlikely to happen two years in a row, but the standings today wouldn’t have too many surprises compared to what you might expect for the final standings. So, if that were the case, San Antonio vs. Portland in round 1, then the winner of Utah/New Orleans in round 2, the Lakers in the Western Finals, and the winner of a Boston/Orlando Eastern Finals for the championship. Sounds about right.
Whoa, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Alamo. It’s a long season…. one game at a time.

Hill played great. You know, when he is on, if you squint, he looks like part Ginobilli, part Parker. He really does a pretty good job of imitating both of those guys.
All these GIFs are breaking my browser.
I like it that he did not force his shots and focused on defense, playmaking and rebounding.

To me, it’s much sweeter when they quiet the opposing arena than when they fire up the home crowd. Maybe that’s because I only attend away games, but still.
Other than @PHO, which games are you able to easily attend?
"Sometimes the Spurs make you play ugly. That's just the way they are." - Gary Bender
A few years ago, I lived in Sacramento. I attended a regular season game in Oakland, and(due to a lucky draw in the first round) a playoff game in Sacto. Spurs lost both. :(
Hey I might have been at that same Sacramento playoffs game loss. Was in ’06 I think. We lost that game but of course went on to win…everything. I remember a guy had good seats with his whole family wearing black Bowen jersey, loved it.

3-1 through the gauntlet isn’t bad… I’m happy with the W-L. What I didn’t like about the Mavs game is the way the team played, or rather, failed to play. But today’s bounce-back against the Hornets (esp. the way they came back in the 2nd half) is a great indication that this team is locked in, in the Spurs’ “pounding the rock” fashion.

On reconsideration, the Twolves should not be considered to be a TARP for the Spurs…. after the scare up north, I don’t think the team or Spurs fans will take them lightly again this year.
What I’m most interested in for this game are the adjustments that both teams will make from the last meeting. Will Pop give Blair the opportunity to redeem himself vs. Love? Will Coach Rambis allow Beasley to handle the ball in critical situations? Will the Spurs shooters wait until the closing seconds to decide the outcome?
But that’s in the future…. one game at a time. Warriors are a young, up-and-down team… the Lakers totally took them out in the first quarter. Hopefully the Spurs can make it look that easy as well.

Not a Tarp game, but Darko and Love present problems. Darko fouled out which stopped him from doing further damage, but he was gaming all throughout the match. I’m almost sure this will be another tough game.
Let’s focus on the game at hand first… we can worry about Love and Darko later, they’re not going anywhere.

No, this isn’t always going to work. We just have to wait until Splitter’s ready to start.
by DrumsInTheDeep on Nov 28, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions
Honestly, it would make more sense to have Duncan/Dice or Duncan/Bonner because they work in better tandem. I’d feel more comfy with Splitter leading the 2nd unit until maybe the end of the year.
He drew a foul on the majority of those, though it did seem he could have made the basket and had a +1. While he’s shooting FT’s at 72% for the season, he made only 1 of 4 today. If he’d gone hard to the rim to finish, he might have easily finished in double figures.
I have to say, I think spending some time in the weight room could help him out.

Probably not, but he’ll lose it to Splitter/Dyess/Bonner sooner or later. You don’t want to kill your bench by taking Hill out.
Yeah, Hill is the new Ginobili. Obviously not nearly on that level, but he is our sixth man. I think once Anderson gets back and Splitter gets more acclimated, a bench of Hill/Anderson/Splitter/Bonner/Neal has the potential to be the best in the NBA. I think Dyess should take Blair’s starting spot. As much as I like Blair, right now his defensive handicaps make him only our 5th best big. If he continues to play like the 5th best, he won’t be a starter for long.
by slipstream21 on Nov 28, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions
That’s a scary bench (in a good way), but the Spurs are so deep that pretty much any second unit (assuming a healthy &erson) is probably one of the top 3 in the league, on both ends of the floor.

They can score, but the bench versatility isn’t really there yet until Anderson is back and in rhythm. It has holes they try to cover up with the starting lineup more so than what it could be. But we’ll see since Hill wasn’t starting to break out of his slump when Anderson was playing well.
assuming a healthy &erson
And… how about a bench with Ginobili/Neal/Anderson/Splitter/Blair? On offense, Manu running the PnR with Tiago, with two dangerous shooter/slashers, and Blair to gobble up the leftovers; on defense, Splitter anchoring the middle, the wings/guards causing havoc in the passing lanes, and DeBeast grabbing boards.

Spurs are a better 2nd half team at the moment so you should just skip looking at scores or watching the 1st half of games.

Especially on the road. They really hammer people in the 4Q. Their offense is tough to keep down for a full game. Most teams don’t have the bench to survive and respond to them.

They really hammer people in the 4Q. Their offense is tough to keep down for a full game. Most teams don’t have the bench to survive and respond to them.
Maybe this is partly due to the Spurs’ depth, and consequently, ability to play rested players in fourth quarters and to substitute players until they find who has the hot hand. And I think teams are surprised at how quickly the Spurs are able to make 10+ point leads disappear. To me, it looked like the Spurs had beat the Bulls and Thunder psychologically way before the end of those games, because they couldn’t believe how quickly things turn around against them.

The scary thing about this win….if you toss out the first half ( and I think you have to, the deciding half made the first part of the game a moot point ) the Hornets were completely bludgeoned and never had a chance to compete with the Spurs, let alone win the game.

So apparently Pop’s new concoction is: make the opposing team comfortable in the 1st, start chipping on the offensive end in the 2nd, tighten the defensive screws in the 3rd, then rain daggers in the 4th. Awesome recipe for fans interested in contracting varying stress induced ailments.
In other news, ESPN continues to live up to ignoring us by putting up highlights of the Nuggets Friday win over the Bulls as the top NBA story instead of our win over the Hornets, which is the biggest game of the day by far. I don’t know why I still follow ESPN.

Marcus Cousin has come back down to earth since the Toro’s first two games. Against Rio Grande Valley yesterday he had 4 pts & 4 rbs in 28 minutes. Same team today and at half he has only 3 pts and 2 rbs with 3 PF in 6:47.
Most likely shows that the Spurs won’t be in any hurry to signing him to an NBA contract just to insure that he won’t go elsewhere.
Maybe his coach told him to cool it because the Spurs aren’t ready just yet to sign him to a deal? :)

Patrick Sullivan started at center for both games. First game he played 29 minutes and had 15 points and 4 blocks. Second game he got into foul trouble along with Cousin, and played only 7 minutes vs. nearly 20 minutes for Cousin. Mickell Gladness is their backup center, but he as well only played 7 minutes. I’d guess that Patrick Patterson may have picked up the remaining minutes for RGV going against Cousin, as most everyone else on their roster that got into the game is no taller than 6’6".
Cousin wound up the game with 5 points and 7 rebounds, and the Toros won 116-109. I think it’s premature to call Cousin a bust. Next game is Tuesday vs. the Texas Legends with Antonio Daniels. Their leading scorer and rebounder had been Joe Alexander, but he is no longer listed on their roster. I would guess some NBA team is about to announce having signed him, or he left to play overseas.
Rashad McCants has apparently decided to join the Legends, joining their cast of former NBA first-rounders. He won’t be matched up against Cooz, but it’s possible that he took Joe Alexander’s roster spot.
It looks like either Sean Williams or Matt Rogers (who the Legends picked in the first round in this year’s D-League draft) are the forward/centers that Cousin is likely to face… should be a good test for him.

Saw the first half of the game before heading out to work. Impression was as follows " Wow, they are kicking our ass, maybe that NBA best record is fools gold". Then I get to work and tuned back into the game, just a complete 180, wow, we hung 109 points on one of the best defensive teams, locking up their own offense in the process.
What a great win , on the road.

But that’s unfair to say they aren’t fools gold just off one game. They’ve had solid games here and there. Some guys have struggled recently though and that has hurt them slightly.
Good point, but with every subsequent win over a quality oppenent, the Spurs look more and more convincing. They have now beaten Chicago, Orlando, Utah and Charlotte. And it looked to me like they could have played better against Dallas.

Add game out of first place Indy to that list. Yep, those Pacers who won in @MIA and @ LAL.
I know it’s still November but winning by double digits in someone elses arena is an eye catcher. Doing it in OKC, Utah and NOLA in a fashion where we’re extending the lead in the 4Q while shutting down their scoring (and not playing at some methodical pace) is some impressive stuff.

The fact that the team is able to win despite sub-par performances from different players in different games is actually encouraging to me. They’re not just a one-dimensional (or even just a three-dimensional) team… if they were winning only because all cylinders are firing, well that would be fool’s gold imho.

Pop must read PTR. He cost us the game against Dallas by going small on their big front line. He does it again against the Hornets and it wins the game. I just hope he dosen’t fall in love with small ball again and think it will work against LA, Dallas, and Boston. It won’t work against them as Dallas already proved.
But he had to do it. He went big before going small ball and it didn’t work. With New Orleans it works since they aren’t that big with West as their 4.
And let’s not forget the game Minnesota coulda/shoulda won.

Hell yeah! We now have a two game cushion at the top of the West!!!

Hell yes! What a great freking sports day! My Bears win, the Packers lose, most importantly our Spurs win…
and…
The Lakers Lose!
That second seed in the West is going to be quite the scrum. Naturally, we all know who’s finishing first. :D
Back to back losses is what is even better. Utah on the road and Pacers at home. Pacers first win in Staples. They haven’t won since Great Western Forum in 1999.
Pacers are legitimately decent. Along with the Lakers lossing, I like seeing that Pau played 46 minutes, Kobe 40. No one knows that the Lakers are kinda an old team.
Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
hah I was rooting for the eagles, but when cutler takes care of the ball the Bears ae difficult to beat

Tim I hope you’re right.
Cutler is having a much better year this year. I was very skeptical after going 7-9 the last 3 seasons. It’s a comfort thing, I think… kinda like RJ.

I love when Kobe plays Kobe-ball and forgets about everyone on the team

I’m still completely 100% convinced that if Kobe could go out there and play 1 on 5 every night, he would.

crazy stats!
David West got 33 min. 23 pts. 7 rbs. 2 stls. 1 blk. 1 asst.
Manu played 34 min. and got 23 pts. 7 rbs. 2 stls 1 blk 8 assts.
sure West isn’t a traditional big but still!
There just isn’t enough exclamation points for Manu’s game.
forgot to add, Manu had no turnovers? and only fouled once!
(compared to West’s 2 TOs and 5 fouls)
Just goes to show how a little rest between seasons can be beneficial. :D
