I think Pops to blame for this loss. Towards the end of the game Dallas went big and Pop countered by going small RJ was playing the four spot. What’s Pops deal? Stop playing small ball already.

by spurlover on Nov 27, 2010 5:12 AM CST up reply actions

I understand why he went small with his shooters but the problem is that they missed their shots. I blame Pop for putting Bonner on Dirk in the 4th when Dirk had been scoring at will on Bonner

And for two consecutive playoff series the past two years. This is why I’ve been griping about Bonner’s playing time, he’s getting the benefit of the doubt, even when it’s hurting the team.

However, this game reeked of a Pop hiding his cards. The match ups and play calling reeked of Pop playing wanting to not enlighten Dallas to anything early in the season. Dallas is the type of team who gets overconfident winning meaningless games only to crash and burn later on. After seeing the Dallas players preen like they won the Championship, my immediate sentiment was that they’re falling prey to CIA Pop’s rope-a-dope.

Watching the game, it was obvious that the Spurs were the more talented team. Their ball movement was horrid, play all around sloppy, and Dallas was getting the benefit of the refs and a lot of lucky BS, yet the Spurs hung in for most of the game.

Had this been a playoff game the Spurs would have taken over in the 4th

Thanks for this good explanation. Makes this shitty loss not seem so bad. The Mavericks flipping out over this win just seemed pathetic.

by M3D1T8R on Nov 27, 2010 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Concur on all points. This was exactly how I felt as the game wound down and I thought about it afterward. I wonder if they give out banners for meaningless regular season wins? Mavs’ rafters need something to display.

And Blair needs to be like the 4th big off the bench.

by grego21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

He will eventually. I think Pop knows that once he’s the starter there’s no going back. And both minutes and familiarity within the system are a concern this early in the season. I think Tiago builds toward a huge increase in PT during the RRT, after which he starts next to TD. Which is okay. Championships are not won in December, only seeding can be hurt. With a 13-2 start the latter is not a problem. Pop is building toward this being the best rotation in the spring instead of late fall.

tf4e, you’re confusing the Spurs with our other fave team. But while the Titans have to play four good quarters to have a shot at winning, it’s looking more and more like one or two good quarters is enough for the Spurs to win in the regular season.

Shoot, against the Bulls, all they needed was the 3rd!

I agree. Just because we can shoot it doesn’t mean it has to be our main option. We were not penetrating enough tonight. Yeah, they have a shotblocker there in Chandler but we should have moved the ball more to at least unbalance their defense..

by TD21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

Well, we got all these shooters so if some have an off night, we can put someone else in. Manu was the only good shooter tonight… Neal passed up a few and tried to drive instead, which I just don’t understand.

Pop doesn’t seem to want to play him with Tim in the game, he only used him as a sub for Tim. But he also gave McDyess a good number of Tim’s minutes. I don’t think Tiago got in during the 2nd half at all, despite looking good when he was in during the first half.

And we would have…without the turnovers & missed 3s.

by titansfan4ever on Nov 27, 2010 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

Mavs make one big offensive driven run per game, where they score on 9 of 10 possessions. One key is to make sure that we don’t go dry on offense at the same time. The other key is to have a lead when they make their run. When it happens in the 4th Q it can be more devastating but the big issue wasn’t be outscored 32-21. It was opening the 4th only up 2. After Hill made a 3 for a five point lead, the offense went dry. If the team had entered the 4th with the 6-10 point lead they would’ve had without the turnovers, the Mavs’ run would’ve pulled them to a tie, where the Spurs would have stayed in normal offense to win the game. I can’t believe this team committed 17 TOs and go out-rebounded.

by the little o on Nov 26, 2010 10:03 PM CST reply actions

I think too much hack-a-Chandler earlier in the game hurt us. Too much stoppage, means we had no flow and bad rhythmn. And since Chandler was making his FT’s it was all negative for us.

by TD21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:04 PM CST reply actions

It’s kind of hard to stop Chandler. You have to work early and not let him inside. Blair is strong, he could muscle Chandler out, but he gives up too much in height. Tiago or Timmy would have been ideal, but tiring out Timmy would be bad. Why didn’t Pop play Tiago on Chandler more?

by magnuskrauss on Nov 26, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

I really don’t know about Tiago’s limited minutes, unless it really is to rest him because he had an extended season. I’m surprised we didn’t try to take Chandler out of the equation through early foul trouble. I guess tha’t what they tried with hack-a-Chandler, to take him out if he was seen as a liability on the offensive end.

by TD21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Pop loves playing small ball to much. Tiago is not 6’4 so he dosen’t want to play him.

by spurlover on Nov 27, 2010 5:23 AM CST up reply actions

We’ll see if Pop’s in love with small ball once April and the playoffs come around.

Something tells me that small ball in the regular season might be the best way to chew up minutes while preserving our bigs for the time we’ll need them most.

RJ2.0: vive la différence.

by J.R. Wilco on Nov 29, 2010 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

um, hack-a-Chandler was not actually a tactic to see if he missed free throws it was because he was unstoppable once he had the ball in his hand under the rim. Chandler is an 82% free throw shooter, there is no way that Pop plays that game on purpose – unless it is to take away an easy bucket

No, there have been games where TD has scored fewer than 10 points and the rest of the team picks it up and the Spurs win. It’s not about the Big Three. It’s as Sean said, poor ball movement, too much one-on-one iso and drive leading to a very un-Spurs-like result.

Strangely, I dont feel bad for this loss. We need to lose this game to improve our defense. Can’t rely on scoring 100+ every game. We have gotten used to it and that is the issue. This would help us tighten up our defense.

That may be, and we know Pop likes to give life lessons to the team, but this is not a new team. Those lessons were given last year. This years is more about tweaking and building from what they learned las year. Early last year, we sacrificed wins over the learning process. Now is the time to implement what they learned. I’d be dissapointed if Pop let this one slip just to give the team another lesson.

Yeah our average or below average stats on turnovers I was worried about. Every game we start turning it over carelessly, I think its going to be the death of us. Somehow we’ve still managed to pull off the wins, so it gets a bit ignored. Tonight it finally caught up on us.

by M3D1T8R on Nov 26, 2010 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Yup, those turnovers cost us a lot. Bad communication all around there.

by magnuskrauss on Nov 26, 2010 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

Last night seemed as though they came from poor ball movement and bass passing. In other games some of them seem to be from different lineups of players adapting to each other mixd with playing a faster pace.I expect the ones from other game to reduce over the course of the season. I expect that last night was just an aberration of bad offense. Once in ten games or so is not bad.

Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!

Rich, it’s okay to feel bad because we always want a W against the Mavs. But in the bigger scheme of things, it’s just one game that ended a streak that will eventually end anyway. I just hope we learn from this, move on and go work on starting another steak.

by TD21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:50 PM CST up reply actions

My luck sucks.

Earlier today I bought expensive (to me) tickets for the Warriors game Tuesday. Thought with a little luck we might get through Dallas and then what I thought would be the tougher one in New Orleans, to go into Oakland going for 15 in a row.

Oh well, still looking forward to it, but damn. Now there’s a good chance we will go into Oakland trying to avoid a 3 game skid.

All cos of a bad final couple minutes tonight.

Where the hell was RJ tonight? 2pts, 2 turnovers, 0 assists in 22 minutes, seriously?

Shitty time for RJ 1.0 to come back. Of he had done anything tonight we would have won.

And that doesn’t even take into account Tonys dogshit game.

As is I feel like the loss should have been worse than it was. We were unusually great from the foul line, while Dirk didn’t shoot one.

And now my wife tells me shes having an allergic reaction to something tonight and is having trouble breaking.

Ball movement was complete crap. Parker was a big part of that, but even Manu in the second half didn’t get enough going with the team. Some of his passes were to the knees of guys like Duncan for instance.

by grego21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

TP better play his best game against CP3. We’ll be seeing more passes this time for him.

Well if he plays even close to how he has normally been playing, he should be fine. The problem is no one played smart consistently. Parker was the main culprit, but everyone was pretty bad.

Our starting backcourt playing great has been the key to our wins. If they play great, then it will rub-off to the other guys. It’s like a good infection or something. But if only Manu plays well or TP, then we’ll get the bad infection.

The problem is neither of them played that well from the floor general aspect. Manu had a nice scoring game, but his floor general game was poor (below normal Manu standards). I think Timmy picked up a few turnovers that weren’t really his from passes from Manu or Tony.

by grego21 on Nov 26, 2010 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Well said, alot of the second half consisted of us bringing the ball up then running the “spurs last play of the quarter play”, with ginobili taking a outside shot or coming off a pick, and when he did pass alot of them were off the mark. george hill did alot of the same either pulled up for a jumper or tried to get to the line. Bottom line 11 assists as a team is unaccceptable

M3D, you had better have that looked into, unless she had it before and you have some anti-allergy ready. Internal inflammation of the respiratory tract is not a good thing. RJ didn’t help much tonight. And since he was mostly guarding the fourth option on the Mavs team, his defensive contribution would not have been significant.

Nice find, A.

This was a lot like Game 1 of last year’s Dallas-S.A. series. We could have won it, but when Dirk goes 12-14, the margin for error is so low. It wouldn’t have even been a game in the 4th if the Spurs hadn’t shot an un-Spurslike percentage of their free throws. Yes, their defense did give us problems in the 4th, but the staff will watch the video figure out how to attack them.

What you can guarantee, is that Dirk won’t shoot that % from the field every game.

I seem to remember a game where Parker was deliberately put on Dirk and bothered him by bodying him up so much that Dirk shot so poorly in that game. I saw a few rotations where Parker was on Dirk, but they gave Dirk so much space that they were practically begging him to shoot. Why, Pop, why?

Tony was sleep walking thru the whole game. To be outplayed by JK is pathetic. RJ reverted to "09-‘10 form. Why didn’t Pop try Tiago against Dirk in the 4th. Dirk had 4 fouls the entire 4th and we never went at him. Stupid.

great point

I didn’t realize how many fouls he had. I was cheering every time they fouled us, hoping they were going to go into the penalty so we could maybe steal it at the line.

Tony was nowhere to be seen. RJ didn’t do shit, got the ball, stood there with it half a second, and passed it like he didnt know what it was for.

Lots and lots of stagnant offense. Turning point of the game, if you need one, was that acrobatic play by George Hill down the sideline to get the lay-up. Dallas immediately scored back, nipping any kind of run. The Spurs have been making a lot of those timely fourth quarter plays lately, but Dallas was the one making them last night.

All these GIFs are breaking my browser.

by quincyscott on Nov 27, 2010 11:04 AM CST reply actions

There was a point I think a bit before that where someone I think Manu or Bonner missed a 3 when we were up 4, would have put us up 7. I remember thinking that would have been the biggest shot of the game. Instead I believe Dallas scored, maybe a 3pter or 3pt play and it was back to a 1pt game grind just like that.

by M3D1T8R on Nov 27, 2010 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

Not only did they get a basket, they got an And One off of a stupid foul by Manu to add to the horrible defense. They took a 1 one point lead off of that.

by grego21 on Nov 27, 2010 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

And I don’t quibble with the way the Spurs defended Nowitski. It was the scoring of other players, combined with our own bad shooting and decision making, that sunk us last night. Nowitski can score. That’s about as well as he can be expected to be contained on a given night.

Another way of looking at it is that we got out-hustled, really for the second game in a row. We didn’t get enough rebounds, didn’t move the ball enough, didn’t find the open man enough, were timid when shots were even mildly challenged. We looked very uncomfortable on offense. Part of that is certainly their defense getting us into uncomfortable scenarios, but I also think a lot of it was unforced mistakes.

Well, I read a line from Bobby Jones, the golfer, stating that he never learned anything from a win. Maybe there is some truth in that, and these guys need to lose to learn. I’m sure they have plenty to look at on game film today.

All these GIFs are breaking my browser.

by quincyscott on Nov 27, 2010 11:12 AM CST reply actions

All win streaks end and when they do it’s likely because the streaking (better) team has an off night and/or the opponent plays their best. Defense was not up to par but the Mavs shot 53% in large part due to Dirk and Marion having great nights. The former happens. The latter rarely so. So long as we bounce back in NOLA and start a new win streak, Friday night means nothing. Until we play the Mavs next month.

What caught my eye was this Spurs team scoring 94 points on a night that TP and RJ combined for 11 while TD just has his normal 15. Cut the unforced turnovers, play Splitter in the post more often and have Tony play better and they beat a Mavs team having great nights from three players. This tells me they’ll win the future match-ups with Dallas. For now? Hang a banner, Dallas. You ended a second big win streak. The highlights of your season, no doubt.

Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
