Alonzo Gee, Where Are you?
I was a little surprised when we didn't see James Anderson get much playing time, but I was more surprised that Alonzo Gee logged ZERO mins. I know McDyess was given the night off for rest, Splitter couldn't play due to injury, but what could have kept Gee from being in the game altogether. What do you think was the reason for this move? Please fill free to take the poll below. Also please give your thoughts because I would love to hear what you all think is the reason.

heh. It was just odd that the only two guys who didn’t play last night both went to school at Alabama, that’s all.

I’m guessing he’s the de facto backup SF, so Pop wants to see who has a chance of unseating him. Plus, if somebody does, he’s still D-League eligible, right?
Yes, he’s still D-League eligible. He’s also cheap as far as contracts go, so Spurs can wait on him to hopefully improve.
I think the Spurs are right near the point where the luxury tax kicks in, or at least where they miss out on a distribution. That would make an NBA contract for someone playing in the d-league more expensive than just what the player gets. They might also qualify for some money to help pay a veteran like Simmons while not for the less experienced Gee.
Those considerations may be somewhat minor if they feel Gee improved his game in the areas they felt were deficient. If he hasn’t, they might feel that they’d take a chance by releasing him and then offering him a Toros contract. They could lose him, but it would require another NBA team to drop an additional player from their roster at the end of training camp to make room for Gee.
This could be like Malik not playing in the Summer League. A deal with another team in the works and they don’t want him to get hurt in the meantime. Essentially means he doesn’t make the Spurs, but a trade is nearly complete or a contract with a European club.
