I just logged on to post a DTOUR. Guess I’m going to wait a couple more days.
And Halloween isn’t something people in Belgium participate in.
Something else: am I the only Belgian on PtR?

I am sorry you guys don’t participate in Halloween. One would think being in relatively close proximity to Ireland (The birthplace of Halloween), you guys would celebrate it.

I’m not really a big baseball fan. I just want to give a shout-out to Filipino-American Giant’s pitcher Tim Lincecum. Good luck in the World Series.

Very interesting article. However, the Rangers will be too much for Lincecum and the Giants.

He’s Fil-Am? No way! How come they’re not pointing that out in the local broadsheets?

This was my first time seeing that mask, and I had to get one, despite being mentally scarred afterward. I don’t think I’ll be doing anything Halloween related, except for watching The Walking Dead on AMC. Is anyone else looking forward to that? I’ve never been a zombie movie fan, but with AMC’s current success and the show’s pedigree, I’m definitely giving it a shot.

It’s a new TV series based on a comic book that airs the first episode on Halloween night. It’s “written and executive produced by three-time Academy® Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), who also directs the pilot, and executive produced by Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens).” That’s what I mean by it’s pedigree.

Alright, a question.

I’m 19 years old, and still play youth basketball in my hometown. We have two adult teams (let’s call them One and Two). Two asked me at the beginning of the year to play with them. I played an avg. of 15 to 20 minutes per game (from 40, not 48). The last two weeks, I played the last 4 minutes, when the game was already over. In the first of those games, we were up by 23 at the half and eventually won by 52. The night before that game, our training wasn’t that good, and our coach himself said to a friend of mine that I was the best player (effort, defence) from that training… And then I get to play 4min!?! The same thing happened yesterday.

Do you think I should go and ask my coach what I’m doing wrong, what the reason for my (low amount of) minutes is? Or should I just keep playing and proving him wrong through my actions on the court (training, since I don’t play in games _’).

Do they celebrate Halloween in Argentina? Surely they must at least do a “Dia de los muertos” type of thing.

The Spurs = Not your granddaddies 7th seed !

by alamobro on Oct 24, 2010 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions

No. Día de los muertos doesn’t exist in Argentina, that I know of. Maybe in the north they have something like that, but I doubt it.

They’re trying to push Halloween in Buenos Aires, because it’s a great way to sell orange crap and costumes. I hate it with a passion.

I smell death... everywhere.

by LatinD on Oct 24, 2010 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

The name Hallow e’en actually is derived from being the Eve of All Hallows, or All Saints. The day following All Saints day in the Catholic world is All Souls day in which the Souls of the deceased are prayed for. Both events can be celebrated in odd ways in the secular world, particularly in the U.S. They would be celebrated in church universally.

by Alamo on Oct 24, 2010 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Ultimately, Halloween has its roots in an ancient Celtic festival thought to be about 2000 years old (predating All saints and all souls day) that was called “Sam Hain”. It was a festival mainly meant to honor the dead, and was held from October 31st, through November 1st

About 700 BC, Pop Boniface came up with a new holiday, All saints day, meant to honor the saints.
It is believed by some that Christianity, (realizing they could not eradicate this “pagan” holiday), decided to try to disguise it and put a religious spin on it. Hence, all Souls day was born.

I was at Halloween on Castro in San Francisco one year, and they had a full cheerleading team doing routines in the street. Only catch: all guys. Big tall muscular guys dressed in skimpy (women) cheerleader costumes doing perfect tucks and jumps. It was really funny.
This probably ruined whatever mental picture you were previously enjoying, but hey, this is PtR.

Killjoy! I love Halloween. My favorite party time of the year.
Talking of pushing merchandise – Hallmark and other card companies are now pushing thanksgiving cards! There will be some early adopters that will do it as a cool “something different nice gesture”, then next thing you know everyone expects Thanksgiving day cards and gifts. Those guys know how to market.

Well, I hate it because it represents cultural colonialism, not because I don’t like pumpkins or women decked in sexy costumes.

by LatinD on Oct 25, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah sexy costumes don’t really need halloween. Does cultural colonialism stem from the attempt to infiltrate Buenos Aires with Halloween or because every aspect of our US society is engulfed with Halloween this next week? Even our language takes on a different buuaahhhaahA to it.

by cojones2thewall on Oct 26, 2010 1:47 AM CDT up reply actions

The first one, c2tw. Halloween in Buenos Aires just doesn’t fit, and it’s an excuse to sell crap. Halloween in the States sounds fun. :)

by LatinD on Oct 28, 2010 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought maybe Argentina would celebrate dia de los muertos, it being a Catholic deal and Catholicism being the country’s main dominant religion.

As for Halloween, it certainly is a profitable holiday. I think I have read that it is the second highest grossing holiday in the US for total sales of goods.

I have always loved Halloween but I think its true meaning certainly can be lost amidst the candy, costumes and good times. It certainly was lost on me until a few years ago when I decided to research it. It seems several cultures have days of remembrance for the deceased at around this time of year, and It’s got me to thinking a little more about that. Not to mention I love getting dressed up and seeing the variety of costumes when I go out.

Combining Spurs and Halloween for the game Oct 30 – purple shirt with black bats on the front, black & purple stripe sleeves – added Manu’s number and name to the largest bats on the front, put a big 20 on the back with “BatManu” above that. We have to commemorate the Great Bat Capture somehow. I’ll accessorize with matching socks and bat earrings.
