Since Hipuk’s a lazy immigrant who definitely won’t be taking your jobs.

California sheephead

Male and female sheephead have different color patterns and body shapes. Males are larger, with black tail and head sections, wide, reddish orange midriffs, red eyes and fleshy forehead bumps. Female sheephead are dull pink with white undersides. Both sexes sport white chins and large, protruding canine teeth that can pry hard-shelled animals from rocks. After powerful jaws and sharp teeth crush the prey, modified throat bones (a throat plate) grind the shells into small pieces.

Sheephead hunt actively during the day, but at night, as many wrasses do, they move to crevices and caves and wrap themselves in a mucus cocoon. Predators on the hunt can’t detect the fishes’ scent through the mucus covers. Sheephead appear to be asleep, but since fishes don’t have eyelids, we can only assume they’re sleeping.

During mating season (between July and September) male sheephead become territorial and defend their spawning territory. Dominant males lead the females in a circular pattern as they broadcast sperm and eggs, respectively. If a smaller male approaches, the male interrupts spawning activity to chase away the intruder. The females spawn between 36,000 and 296,000 eggs, which hatch into larvae. The young of the year sheephead don’t resemble adults; they’re a bright reddish orange with large black spots on their dorsal and upper tail fins and a white stripe running the length of their bodies.

All sheephead are born female. Most of them change to males following environmental clues we don’t fully understand. In 1990, Robert Cowen studied sheephead in four sites where the availability of food varied. In the area with the most food, females changed sex at about 13 years old and lived about 21 years. In the area with the least food, females changed sex at five to six years old and lived about nine years. At least in these two areas, the females changed sex about two-thirds of the way through their life spans.

TD played 39 mins, Pop will probably bench him in the next game

If you liked it then you should have put a 5th ring on it. Oh oh oh.

At some point in the season, we have to start beating the good teams. Preying on the bad time is good enough to get to the playoffs, but not much more than that.

WTF

Just got back from the Celtics/Hawks game. Last update I saw at the arena Spurs were up 80-67 Then I come home to find out we F(*#@) LOST.

How? Who is responsible for this crap?

I haven’t watch the game yet on league pass but I saw the stats.

And this is the one that stood out, REBOUNDS! dal-39 S.A.-32

Then I see Blair and Dice played a total of 20 mins.

FU#() Why? Why do we keep doing this crap? Small ball can go to hell.

Some one please help me understand what the F#*)@ is going on here because a 42pt 4th qtr should have some one fired.

Your big 4 was not where to be found in the 2nd half aside from Duncan.

Blair and Dice were in constant foul trouble. They couldn’t go 6 min straight without having another foul called on them.

by grego21 on Jan 8, 2010 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

And Theo? Why no Theo? Replay still not available yet. I am going crazy. I can’t believe we gave up a 42pt qtr. This is unbelievable. That has to be some kind of record. I don’t know about you guys but this beats all the Spurs’ low moments for the year. It is time to panic. If we don’t get some size before the all star break we are not going far in the playoffs.

They were atrocious in the first half, not so much in the second I dont blame them for the loss.

by spursfan87 on Jan 9, 2010 12:42 AM CST up reply actions

Yes, although the early touchy-feely fouls especially on Dice may have set them up in the late stages of the game. To adjust to the calls they had to be less physical and less aggressive on D. Taller defenders may have performed a better imitation of an upright pole. I didn’t get to watch the entire fourth (I had the case of the stutters) but the way Dirk took off, its going to be hard to stop a falling, flailing jump shooter when all you can do is stand as rigid as a post.

by TD21 on Jan 9, 2010 2:19 AM CST up reply actions

This is a terrible terrible lost. We could have given up a 30pt 4th Qtr which is also bad and still won this game. 42pts is unheard of.

What this lost tells me, is exactly what I already suspected. Our team is mentally WEAK as HELL.

It also tells me, we have nothing as far as an assistant coaching staff on the bench. Our defense is crap, our rebounding is crap. All those times we were barely beating sub .500 was no accident. We were playing about as good as we are going to get.

We are in trouble. Big trouble. You don’t easily bounce back from a lost like this, because in the back of our guys mind, they know, no matter what kind of lead they have going into the 4th, they can still lose because they are susceptible to giving up huge qtrs and blowing ANY lead.

Its time to push the panic button and get some trades done.

Mase, Manu, Bonner, Finley, Bogans, DICE and GHill put them all on the trading block and get TP and TD some help. Whatever it takes. Because these guys are crap, if you can’t buckle down and play hard for your coach, after he has been kicked out going to bat for you and you are in your own gym, then you don’t deserve to be a Spur.

This team can no longer ignore the fact that we are missing a very important position.

We need a true center. It doesn’t matter how good our perimeter game has become if we can’t protect the paint and rebound. If we have to trade away our bench, to get a center then that is what we better do, otherwise get used to the way we are feeling now, because more LOSING is a coming.

by GhosTown on Jan 8, 2010 11:24 PM CST reply actions

G town…Im not saying there is nothing wrong with the team, but the stats indicate that the Spurs are amongst the best at defense in the paint, as well as a very good rebounding team.

However, I cant argue that the Spurs team statistics have been padded by all of the bad competition they have faced early in the season. Im not ready to panic just yet. Besides, no one is coming to help the spurs. There will be no trade that lands us Wade or Marc Gasol.

Take a chill pill man. Alot of time left for these guys to improve on the defensive end.

This team can no longer ignore the fact that we are missing a very important position.

I agree, we need true starting center (Haywood). IMO Blair, Dice, Bonner Theo are good solid players, but they all are bench players and none of them are centers.

At the very least the spurs should give Ian a chance, we need a C.

by spursfan87 on Jan 9, 2010 12:53 AM CST up reply actions

I don’t think we need a center per se. We need someone tall and mobile enough to keep up with tall, mobile, perimeter shooting bigs that Duncan has a hard time covering on the run or hard to get back to since he’s always on help mode in the paint. I was really hoping they would use this game as a gauge as to where Haislip is at this point. Upon his signing, they said what they liked about him aside from being young and athletic was his capability to shoot the 3 and to defend face up bigs. I’m still hoping he pans out and at the very least be a slight defensive upgrade over Bonner.

by TD21 on Jan 9, 2010 2:32 AM CST up reply actions

TD we are like half ways through the season. I dont think Slip is gonna pan out…

...Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is forty five.

by alamobro on Jan 9, 2010 4:31 AM CST up reply actions

At this point, I think the entire idea behind the Haislip signing was to have someone to fill Bonner’s role after Bonner’s gone, but it seems like they are trying to make sure he learns the system this year before they’ll allow him any significant playing time.

This feels like Deja Vu for me. The Steelers went thru something similiar. They started losing games they should have won and people were saying, “Oh don’t worry, we are the Steelers we will bounce back.” Well we didn’t and we missed the playoffs.

Moral of the story.

You are what your record says you are. And our record says we are not good against ANY winning team. Last I checked they don’t let sub .500 teams into the post season, so come playoff time our record says we will not beat anyone.

I would love to join in on the optimism, if any exists. But I know a titantic when I see one.

And right now without a true center, there is a huge hole ripped into the side of our season, and while the lights are still on and the band is still playing, this ship will not float.

I bet Pop got kicked out of that game on purpose, just to see if that would light the proverbial fire for the Spurs. If that is what he was trying to do, well he got his answer. A resounding “NO”

This team is mentally weak. We can sit hear and try to make excuses, but this lost tonite showed a lack of mental toughness.

Yeah we have the lowly Nets next, and we will probably sneak by them for the win, but don’t be fooled. There is a reason we haven’t beaten any winning teams, and the reason is WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

I watch our 2 best wins against winning teams. The Houston game we won because Brooks had a terrible shooting night, it wasn’t anything we did. And the Dallas game we shot the lights out behind the arc, and they didn’t, so we lucked up there.

We can sit here and say for the next 10 games “I hope the Defense starts to play better” but let me tell you. HOPE is not a plan.

The Spurs better be willing to put up some real trade bait, because this team has to be reworked. And quickly….
