Mon.1.4.10 Loser Thread
Good evening all. No Spurs tonight, but we do have four other games around the league. The Atlanta Hawks travel to Miami for a rematch of last years first round series with the Heat, while the Chicago Bulls host our favorite opponent - the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Nooch travel to Utah, and Portland travels to Staples to take on the Clips. Only one Southwest team plays. Sorry no logos. Short, sweet and to the point. Who's your big loser?

I went with the Blazers because I think they’re getting a little too high over their heads with the wins. I’m so cruel.

Well, I’m here. Can’t say I’m excited about any of these games…
By the way, anyone saw Fatality screw the pooch the other day against the Lakers?

No vacations for me till the last week of January, when I travel to SA. So far 2010 has been pretty shitty. My sciatica’s killing me, and my IBS is being… irritable. :)
I think I might just fly to the US on a medichopper.
And yes, I saw your YouTube channel and just had to comment on that unique piece of video. :)

Dude, I hope your health (back and whatever ailments you have there) holds up while in the US. It’s gonna be a blast and I’m excited for you.
I didn’t even know it got uploaded. It took forever to put it up with a sucky connection. Ah, I’ll have to take that monstrosity down when I get home. I was experimenting on a new video editing software, hence the crappiness.

I sure hope so, too. I’m taking the strongest shot I can find before hopping onto that plane… :)

By the way, I suggest getting this book over Simmons’ piece.
by silverandblack_davis on Jan 4, 2010 8:43 PM CST up reply actions
Heh, it has a chapter dedicated to analyzing LeBron as a physical specimen. That might drive you away.
by silverandblack_davis on Jan 4, 2010 8:46 PM CST up reply actions
It’s about the author analyzing the game through the players, their techniques, nuances, what makes them tick. Lots of player interviews, if you like that kind of stuff.
Or would you prefer something more related to the history of basketball? Here’s what Simmons offers: half of it is dedicated to breaking down his top-95 players of all time. He also writes about the best NBA team of all-time, and his hand-picked fantasy team among players in the post-merger NBA.

Honestly, I want to buy a good book about the Spurs’ history. Does that even exist?
Failing that, I want to buy a book about the history of the league. Sounds like Simmon’s… (Although it’s probably too expensive.)
Bone breaking? -340
Dunkin' Cheerleaders
Sadly, there’s none. Would’ve bought it, too, if there was one. It’s all about books on the Lakers and Celtics. Even the last Celtics championship (2008) had a book written about it, and the Spurs already had 4 with zero books. Sadness.

Meh. I actually plan to talk to everyone I can when I visit the AT&T Center, see if I can find any information or anecdotes to write about. I thought there’d be a book or two I could buy…

And the lack of books about the Spurs… I think insider access to the Duncan-Popovich era is quite difficult compared to the other teams. That, or maybe the team is just too boring for them.

What about the Robinson years? Or the Gervin era? Has to be the lack of interest, or something.

I don’t want to disappoint you but there was also a book about the 2008 Lakers when they lost in The Finals to Beantown.
I think that was just an update of a previous book though.

So, Pau… seems pretty injury prone this year. Lakers shouldn’t rush him back, that’s how Manu ended up with the groin injury earlier in the year.
The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!
Yeah, he caught a lot of shit for playing in the European thing instead of resting this summer. But there is only so much you can do about it.
I don’t think they were playing him major minutes. Kobe is the one I worry most about. He’s already banged up and won’t let Phil sit him down.

Don’t imagine it is a best seller among the Longhorn crowd. (Btw, you’re not headed toward Pasadena this weekend are you?)
The Lakers "Too big, too strong, too long, too good."
Why do you ask? Do you want to buy me a beer as we leaf through the Kobe book and talk about how he could be worn out by the time the real season arrives? Or do you have a more sinister intention in mind?
Sure, all that. We just had Oregon and Ohio State through last week. They had a parade and stuff.
I know this is a Spurs blog but I am just surprised that I haven’t heard a peep about this next weekend here – and especially about how the last time they played, against USC, Vince Young, blah, blah, blah.

So… during the holiday break, I watched 500 days of summer and Where The Wild Things Are. Both pretty interesting movies.
by silverandblack_davis on Jan 4, 2010 8:45 PM CST reply actions
Hm. I watched an old movie, from the 70s, called Sleuth. Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. It was incredible.
I also watched The Day the Earth Stood Still, both the 1951 and the 2008 versions. Both were pretty boring, but somehow the 2008 movie was even more so. Despite Jennifer Connelly.

Friday Night Lights is based on a football team in Texas. High drama. But I like the story lines, and great acting. The lead is Kyle Chandler, the guy from Early Edition.

I don’t think so. Season 3 is ongoing… or at least that’s what I know? Haven’t started on it yet.
by silverandblack_davis on Jan 4, 2010 9:26 PM CST up reply actions
No, in fact, it has been renewed for two more seasons. But it’s a weird deal—each season is aired first ONLY on DirecTV (satellite), and then on network television. The latest season has already finished airing on satellite, so NBC could start showing it now, but they have decided to sit on it until summer 2010. Which is idiotic. But that’s network television for you.

Nic Cage. It’s not even close.

Good point. I did love The Rock, Face Off and maybe Con-Air, so Nic has that going for him. I haven’t watched any Clooney movie that I did like.

Clooney has a couple of good movies. The one where he’s a bank robber (with J-Lo of all people) has a pacing I love for some reason. Michael Clayton was well done, Syriana too. Good Night, and Good Luck. is a good movie, but he had an easy role.
I’ve heard good things from The Men Who Stare at Goats, but I haven’t watched it yet.

I lost one too. To the Spurs, ironically. By four points or something.

I must’ve done something wrong to displease the fantasy gods. First, Hedo underperforms (the whole season), then Delonte gets arrested, then Alston gets waived.

He was showing great promise in the summer while playing for the WeeFwench team. I would expect him to get some minutes.
When the tooth fairy's own tooth falls out, it is taken during the night by Princess Peanut.
He’ll definitely get minutes, but I really have no idea what’s going on with him. Back in October, he was supposed to miss 4-6 weeks. It’s been a lot longer than that.

I was going to watch the Nooch game just for the Peja heads, but it’s not even in Nooch land, and seeing only 1 peja head isn’t as fun.

They weren’t talking crap about the Lakers, at least I didn’t hear them. It was funny when there was a Kobe jersey behind them though, and they told the guy holding it to get it out of there, this is a clippers show, or something like that. They called Kobe the mvp of the season so far too.
