Spurs Waive Marcus Haislip
We received this bit of news:
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived forward Marcus Haislip to allow him to pursue opportunities outside of the NBA.
The 6-10, 230-lb Haislip appeared in 10 games for San Antonio and averaged 2.5 points and 1.0 rebounds in 4.4 minutes.
The Spurs roster stands at 14.
We hardly knew you, Marcus. Godspeed.

This is probably what’s best for him. He gets his NBA salary, plus anything a Euro team will pay him. Bummer that he didn’t really get a chance, though.
And I don’t think this will be the last roster move the Spurs make. Hopefully, they’ll go after another SF via trade or signing them off waivers.
The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!
Just read over at ST that he’s going to Panathinaikos… Since that’s one of the top-tier Euro teams, I wonder if there was any kind of buyout involved – it sure would have made it a sweeter deal for us.

I’ll be curious if he has a 1 year deal abroad and the Spurs are just letting him go play and then will sign him again next summer to replace Bonner. I’m sure he has learned a lot about the team in just this amount of time this season, but he was never going to see playing time. Maybe this is the equivalent of sending Hairston to the D-League.
Except that he will be paid very good money (much better than what he was earning at San Antonio) playing for arguably the 2nd best European team. He tried to make it to the NBA but he never really got his chance. When one sees the relative success of David Andersen, I think that Haislip could have been useful.
I think Pop is still intrigued by the stretch-4 player; I guess he didn’t really like what he saw from Haislip to really give him a shot. But from what it sounds like is that it was Haislip’s call and not the Spurs’.
But let see, who can the Spurs bring in to immediately help with similar qualities that Haislip had? How about Antawn Jamison? He’d be a heck of a lot better than Bonner, especially with 20-10 potential and he makes his flip-and-trick shots so effortlessly that he garners his points with Duncan-like fashion: nobody knows how much he scores until you check out the box score.
Well, maybe I’m just getting ahead of myself here…but what do the Spurs have up their sleeves this time? Hhhmmmm…
Am I the only one who doesn’t like the idea of the Spurs getting Jamison? o.0

Yep, but it’s not going to happen anyway, so don’t sweat it.

If this is the first step in a trade dance, I wonder where we will end up?

If we are going to have a trade, wouldn’t it be better to keep Haislip for it?

Not really… His salary was so little that it wouldn’t have made a major difference, and Mahinmi’s probably a much better trade asset at under $1M than Haislip ever was.

plus we were full up on roster spots so we couldn’t take more players than we were sending, but now we can
I know he wasn’t worth much, but still having another “toss in” could help. Although we now have a free roster spot, I think our main problem really is just working out our chemistry. I don’t see how adding 2 or more new players is going to help the team.
I do think you’re right about him working on a deal with the Spurs for another contract, though. It just makes sense to do it that way.

Ok so we have a free roster spot. What can we do with it?

I don’t think we need another center. Another true SF would be nice.

Trade Speculation Thread part II might be coming soon, if enough folks are interested.
The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!
Even at his old age he’s still a better defender than our “stopper” Keith Bogans. Bruce would be our second best perimiter defender behind Georgie, lord knows we need defense.

The whole situation with Bowen’s retirement felt weird, like there was some bad blood between him and Pop. In any case, the Spurs showed zero interest in bringing him back, so don’t hold your breath.

yeah, it was strange and kind of sad. I don’t know what happened between the two but Bruce should have been given carte blanche as far as retiring as a Spur goes. Those championships would have been a hell of a lot harder to get without him…………

Bruce
I’m with Tim C. It seems quite evident that he and Pop had a falling out. BB was such an integral part of our last three championship seasons and he fit that whole narrative about the guy who remakes himself halfway through his career. But I’ve not seen one story of Pop bringing him to work with guys like Hill, Hairston, RJ, Haislip, Bogans, etc. to give us that edge that BB brought. I think it’s only because the SA press is so afraid of Pop that no one has written that story.
What about Von Wafer, he’s a tenacious defender and might be that anti-Spur like Jack were looking for.
Spurs going nowhere
The Spurs are going nowhere this year. They are small and don’t run. No wonder McDyse and Jefferson were let go by other teams. Pops has done the worse coaching job of his career.
NO.....
First, I’m sorry but the Spurs are not signing Bruce Bowen. Anyone who watched last season saw that Bruce was a shadow of his former self. He’s old and by old I really do mean OLD (not like some of our other players who can last for a few more years). Was Bruce Bowen an excellent defender? Damn right. Was Bruce Bowen an integral part of three championships? Damn right. Should Bruce Bowen’s number be retired? Damn right. Should Bruce Bowen be re-signed? Hell no. Let us be content with good memories.
Second, I wouldn’t say this Spurs team is finished. Things look rather grim but I still have hope. I don’t know what the solution to our problem is. Could it be a trade? Could there be a “click” down the road sending the Spurs on a crazy long winning streak extending into the playoffs? I have no idea. What I can’t imagine is that the FO is going to let another inadequate year go by because Timmy is only getting older. What needs to be done will be done so the Spurs can at least COMPETE for a championship compared to the last two disgraceful years. Be content with the knowledge that the FO is as concerned as us and they are rapidly attempting to find a solution.
