SPURS: Spurs Assign Hairston To Austin
Sign of somebody coming back, Finley(?) or sign of an impending trade. Interesting still.

Findog’s been practicing with the team, and Hairston’s been inactive the last couple of games before last night, so this isn’t too surprising. Hopefully, the playing time will be good for Malik.
The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!
Kinda sad that we haven’t seen more of Malik this year, but with the way that our bench has been playing I cant argue with Pop.
the way Bogans has been playing, I could.

eh, Bogans had a rough game last night, but the guy has been pretty solid this season. I think adds a toughness to our mostly soft team, kinda like Mario Elie.
you’re right, Bogans does bring toughness, and his defense is the only thing that’s kept him in the rotation thus far. I believe that Hairston’s offense is superior to Bogan’s but as far as his defense, i’m not sure. Considering Hairston should be pretty familiar with the system, I don’t there is much discrepancy in their defensive abilities though, but I guess Pop knows more than me. But once again, Bogans shows a lot more needed toughness than I’ve ever seen from Hairston. His offense really stinks though.

your right I always dread his 3 pt attempts, he looks dreadful shooting it and almost it never goes in.
What the hell?!? I know as Spurs fans we’re pretty spoiled, but this is getting pretty ridiculous when we’re complaining about a guy that shoots just under 40% from beyond the 3-point line. While some of Bogan’s misses are pretty ugly, the guy has been pretty decent on offense. He’s more consistent than Bowen was, at the very least.
“consistent” isn’t the word I would use. He’s a very streaky shooter, but when he’s on it’s a thing of beauty. It’s worth having him out there just for his D, though.

I don’t agree with that. Bowen was deadly from the corners, you could not leave him open. Good teams are making bogans shoot the basketball and he’s hurting us.
He’s an upgrade over last season’s Bowen. Bogans isn’t dead weight on offense, even if he’s limited. He can actually dribble and pass, something Bruce could never seem to do.
Very good. Whenever we compare Bogans favorably to Bowen, let’s not forget to add the “last season” tag.
Please. Bowen’s defense in the (one) Finals series against Detroit was already more valuable to us than Bogans will be his entire Spurs career.

Y’know what, forget games 1-6. Bowen’s game 7 defense is worth all he was paid for.

Yeah I think we’re all aware of this. I’m not downplaying Bowen’s career. I know all about his contributions to the organization. That said he was an absolute zero last season, and his ball handing was suspect.
Bogans is not a Bowen replacement and will never be better than him. All he is an average two guard that fits into the system the Spurs run now.
Have you forgotten when he drained those threes against L.A.? Also, Bowen knows a lot more about the court spacing needed by the Big Three.
just having fun...

Bowen had a 1.22 points per shot average for the 02-03 season and then never got it past 1.15, but was pretty consistent sticking around 1.12. Bogans currently sits at 1.29.
On top of that, he has a 2.18 A/TO ratio. I think Bogans helps the offense more than he hurts it and he is taking an appropriate amount of shots at 3.8 per game in his 20.4 minutes.
I think the key is how are we going to incorporate Findog back into the offense.
Notice I said offense, cause he doesn’t play defense…haha I made a funny!
really, I think the it’s more about how we’re going to incorporate Bonner back. Pop was having a pretty solid rotation with our bigs lately, and it seems like fitting Bonner back in will be kinda difficult. With the way Pop is, my guess is Blair’s minutes will drop, but after what he did, it’ll be hard to justify reducing Blair’s minutes. Oh well, it’s Pop.

Yeah, I worry about re-integrating Bonner too. I think giving him about half the minutes he was getting pre-injury is justifiable, maybe more if his shot is falling on a give night.

I like this, he could then see which player is having a better night, Blair or Bonner, and decide to go with them.

This is true. But what if both are not clicking and we just need solid defense. Who comes behind Dyess?
DaRat?

It is certainly going to depend on the match up.

yeah, but most of the match-ups would favor Bonner I think, since he can spread the floor and is somewhat better at guarding perimeter bigs than Blair at the moment.

I’m only comfortable with Bonner getting half his minutes if the match-ups call for it.
I’m a little upset by Hairston going back down because I think he really deserves to be on a NBA court somewhere. The guy does a good job (backups and junk minutes, I know) every time he gets out there.

“half of his old minutes”

I think Pop has given him confidence that he has Finley’s spot on the 12-man roster next year especially with it looking like it will be impossible to keep Mason after re-signing Manu and bringing over Splitter. I hope I’m wrong but I get the feeling that Mason is going to be on the Lakers next year as he is an improvement over both Farmar and Vujacic, and the Lakers lack role player depth at the moment.
I think this is more about Hairston stretching his legs and helping out the Toros than disrespecting his talent level. If he didn’t have a future with us or wasn’t helping out the Toros, it would be a million times better to have another big or PG on the roster at the veteran minimum than him.
First off, I’m going to assume that Hill improves and get a little more minutes at the shooting guard spot, secondly, I’m going to assume that the front office is going to extend Manu’s contract, because my mind rejects any other possibility. I also think that the front office will resign either Mason, or Bogans, or Bonner, at least one of those. Most likely one of the two guards since they’re grooming Haislip to replace Bonner. With that in mind, we have 3 players that can play the shooting guard spot, which will make it difficult for Pop to find minutes for Hairston at the spot. He’ll most likely get minutes behind Jefferson, and once we trade Jefferson’s expiring contract next year for a stretch defensive 4, he’ll get more minutes then.

hmm.. I was responding to your inquiry about incorporating Bonner back in the offense. If he is our backup SG he will be behind Bogans, Manu and Mason….. 4th stringer SG… he can shoot right?

I honestly don’t know if there is enough room in the rotation for another wing. Right we got Manu, RJ, Boogeyman, Mase, and sometimes Hilldog all bouncing between the two and three spots. With the way they’re all playing I would rather not try to work Fin in there and cut somebody’s minutes.
On the other hand when Rocket returns, we’ll have another big to play. With him back we’ll go small less.
After that Lakers game, I’ve been wondering, how do we match up when Gasol comes back. Timmeh could drive in that game coz Gasol wasn’t clogging the lanes. Pop didn’t play Blair coz it prob wasn’t a good idea against their length, though Blair might still have surprised.
I just wish there was a possibility for a more athletic center, good at small ball and defense. Blair is good, but man I wish Pop and guys would figure out a bit quicker if they can make Blair defend taller guys who shoot over him too easily. Gasol would kill him right now with umpteen ball and head fakes.
That’s exactly what the Spurs wanted from Mahinmi, but they don’t trust him.
The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!
Yeah. Since that hasn’t panned out, I hope there is a trade in the works, though I would hate to lose FinPerro or even Bonner.
I didnt get to see the first half when Theo was out there. How did he do in the short time he was out.
On O he couldn’t hold on to any passes. On D, I don’t really remember. He got the boards. But the thunder doesn’t have any big men who can work the post, so its not really a test.
Blair on the court while Bynum and Gasol are out there spells trouble.
Unless he’s trying to front them to deny the ball, but I can see Kobe trying to exploit that with lob passes and if not he’s out of position when going up for the rebound.
I’m not so sure. Duncan can guard and score on Pau. We didn’t get to see Bynum on Blair, but Blair is strong enough to not be pushed around in the post and Bynum isn’t much of a threat out of it. If the hook isn’t falling, Blair could stand up to him on D. On offense, Blair has tons of moves to get past his defender or use the rim to block the defender. Blair is the vastly superior rebounder of the two as well. On top of all that, Blair would have Timmy out there with him. With Pau out there, it will crowd the paint a little more than how they played us with Odom at the 4.
Timmeh scores on Pau pretty good. I don’t know this season. But the old Timmeh used to score on Pau pretty good. But Pau would also score back pretty decently as far as I remember.
This is Duncan’s splits on ESPN, but you can only see one season at a time. I want a site where it averages entire careers. Then I can go to say Pau Gasol’s page and scroll down to “vs. Spurs” and I’ll have a general idea how he does against Duncan in all the stats.
Basketball reference has those. For Duncan, go here. Click on the year you want to see the game logs, and then you still have to click on the date of the game to see the boxscore.
We’re expecting good results :)

Blair/Bonner
Well, I think both Gasol and Bynum would lick their chops to see Bonner as the other big, at least on the Lakers’ offensive end. On the defensive end, they’d likely put Odom on him. Not sure how Blair would fair against them, but I’d like to find out. I’d also like to find out how Ian and Haislip would do. Hope we get the chance before playoff time.
