This has to be one of the coolest marine animals I have ever seen.

Elysia chlorotica

SEATTLE — It’s easy being green for a sea slug that has stolen enough genes to become the first animal shown to make chlorophyll like a plant.

Shaped like a leaf itself, the slug Elysia chlorotica already has a reputation for kidnapping the photosynthesizing organelles and some genes from algae. Now it turns out that the slug has acquired enough stolen goods to make an entire plant chemical-making pathway work inside an animal body, says Sidney K. Pierce of the University of South Florida in Tampa.
The slugs can manufacture the most common form of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants that captures energy from sunlight, Pierce reported January 7 at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. Pierce used a radioactive tracer to show that the slugs were making the pigment, called chlorophyll a, themselves and not simply relying on chlorophyll reserves stolen from the algae the slugs dine on.
Some related slugs also engulf chloroplasts but E. chlorotica alone preserves the organelles in working order for a whole slug lifetime of nearly a year. The slug readily sucks the innards out of algal filaments whenever they’re available, but in good light, multiple meals aren’t essential. Scientists have shown that once a young slug has slurped its first chloroplast meal from one of its few favored species of Vaucheria algae, the slug does not have to eat again for the rest of its life. All it has to do is sunbathe.
Zardus, who says that he tries to maintain healthy skepticism as a matter of principle, would like to hear more about how the team controlled for algal contamination. The possibilities for the borrowed photosynthesis are intriguing though, he says. Mixing the genomes of algae and animals could certainly complicate tracing out evolutionary history. In the tree of life, he said, the green sea slug "raises the possibility of branch tips touching."

"Bizarre," said Gary Martin, a crustacean biologist at Occidental College in Los Angeles. "Steps in evolution can be more creative than I ever imagined."

Yeah, it’s nice to look into things first—and really, Haiti’s having been so very poor before this, there already were a lot of good charities involved there. DWB is just one of my personal favorites.

I gave to DWB, as 3 of their existing facilities were taken out by the earthquake, and Haiti had too few medical facilities before the earthquake.

Rather than the Red Cross, I would donate to a Haiti-specific organization like Wyclef Jean’s Yele. If you really care about your money going specifically to Haiti, that is. Plus, it’s Wyclef Jean, man. How cool is he?

You can text “yele” (no quotes) to 501501 to make a quick $5 donation, or you can donate via the website I linked above.

Dont Let the Score fool ya

Someone please get AJ on the phone.

Some body needs to call Avery Johnson.

I am sorry Pop is done. He just got out coached by a pissant. After every game I am critical of Pop because, basically, he is coaching terrible.

Now you guys should see what I mean after tonight’s game. That other coach basically schooled him.

What did I say all day. Take the ball out of KD’s hand. And what did Pop do? Let him light us up for 35pts. Besides KD there is no one on this team that can kill you, so why would you let him iso Ghill. WHY???

There is no defense for the dumbness that I saw to tonite. NONE. Pop should be thanking RJ for bailing his butt out, cause he let his team down.

by GhosTown on Jan 13, 2010 10:14 PM CST reply actions

I disagree. But I’ll watch the game again, and take note of adjustments. We’ll see.

You don’t have to tell me that. I know about Blair. I have been begging to see him, because I knew he could do what he did tonite.

But obviously Pop didn’t.

If you read any of my post you will see all I ever do is say let Blair play. I know game when I see it.

But that still don’t let Pop off the hook.

Even the Commentators knew Pop got outcoached tonite, if not for RJ hitting a lucky shot, off a lucky save from Manu we would have lost a game we should have won.

Defend Pop if you like but I can’t sit idlely by and witness such terrible coaching.

It was a short recap not more than a minute long. They mentioned Blair’s numbers but didn’t sound impressed by it. they only showed like 2 Blair plays. Oh, and they started the highlights at like the 3rd quarter. They were amazed by Manu’s save at the end though. Still, I felt the game deserved more time for them to recap, the game of the night was Houston Minny game. Which got around 2 or 3 minutes.

RJ’s dunk made the top 10 plays of the night at number 3. Guess who was number 2? Manu F’en Ginobili with the Rodman-like save. The top play was Corey Brewer’s half court shot of course. Damn Rockets.

They were more impressed with Al’s performance.

I love how the boxscore at nba.com says “Rest” next to Tim Duncan’s DNP-CD. I’ve never seen that before.

Isn’t it actually DND instead of DNP? I’m thinking, what the hell does that stand for? Did Not Dress?

oh you’re right, my eyes just focused on the Rest part. Yeah, it means Did Not Dress. =o

At least, it didn’t say “DNP-OLD AGE” like it did for Robert Horry a few seasons ago.

Good evening friends! I am happy we ended up winning this game, despite it going into OT. No Duncan, 35 from Durant…. but Blair?? Wow. All Rookie 2nd Team, for sure.

What other rookie big men are making the first team?

The Spurs - now playing like sh*t again!

Well, shoot…off the top of my head I can think of … none? Hmm, you think Blair could sneak onto the 1st Team?

Tyreke, Jennings, no Griffin, no Thabeet…

I think it’s possible.

it was a bad joke. Okay lets see, top rookie big men so far this season. Taj Gibson, uhh… Jonas Jerbko, maybe Jon Brockman? So yeah, Blair is definitely the best rookie big man so far.
