Game Preview #35: New Jersey Nets @ San Antonio Spurs

Oh, you think New Jersey sucks?  Did you happen to see the 4th quarter of Friday night's game against Dallas?  Yeah, exactly.

Star-divide

This might look a tiny little bit negative, so I apologize in advance.

Keys To The Game

  • Spine - Maybe we should look as if we have one.
  • Don't think about the upcoming game with the Lakers - We're not going to beat them, anyway.

Strength of Schedule

Both teams have had a day off, and will face one of the league elite teams next.  The Spurs will play the Lakers at home on Tuesday, while the Nets travel home for a game against Boston on Wednesday.

Last Time They Met

This is our first game against the Nets this year, but last season, the Spurs got a 108-93 win in New Jersey on February 10, 2009.

Some Other Reading

Nets

Nets Daily - This is allegedly the SBNation blog for Nets fans.  But, it still hasn't migrated to the SBN format, so I have no proof.
Nets Are Scorching - The TrueHoop blog for NJ. Pretty good stuff here, but they seem pretty jaded, for obvious reasons.

Spurs

48 Minutes of Hell:  The best TrueHoop team blog is now even better, after adding two new writers.  Congrats to Jesse and Andrew, who are already doing good work.
Project Spurs:  Check out their regular podcasts. I think they love Manu as much as we do, if that's possible.

Twitter Musings

MoneyMase Let one slip away tonight. This should have been a win. period

Where to Tune In

TV

This game will be aired on FSN Southwest in SA, and YES in the New York/New Jersey area.  If you have cable or satellite, you'll have to look up your individual channel. And of course, there's always League Pass for the haves.  For the have nots, read on.

Online

As always, NBA League Pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash.  Most Spurs games will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area.

Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.  In fact, nobody can stop you from googling "atdhe". You can also shoot an email to dmenendez@gmail.com for more assistance.

NBA League Pass audio is still free this year, so check it out.

Radio

If you're in the San Antonio area and aren't near a TV, tune in to WOAI (1200 AM).

We better win this. That’s all I can say. And Houston better not get Bosh, and the Mavs better not get Boozer.

Which ever Spur player that gets lit up by 20 points or more, should just get on the bus with Nets and head to New Jersey.

We will send the trade papers later.

yes we are sucking…but there is always space for improvement at sucking.

Lets loose this one after blowing a 29 point lead on a 58 point 4th quarter by the nets. Yi game high 42 points, all in 4th quarter.

Good job, Tim, with the negative preview. It had to be done. You did, however, forget to put in somewhere that the refs suck. We wouldn’t want them to get upset about not being included and toss the whole team, would we?

If the team needs to be whupped by the Nets just to awaken their defensive intensity then so be it.

by silverandblack_davis on Jan 10, 2010 9:52 AM CST reply actions

These will be hard, trying times if you are a Spurs fan; after what was a cakewalk of a schedule that left the Spurs with the fewest games played to date, and mostly against not-so-good competition (below .500), the Spurs are now bombarded with 12 of 17 games played against the league’s upper crust, right before the needed All Star break. This is the time where the Spurs’ D will be put to the test.

I am not too worried about the Spurs vs. Mavericks game because the Spurs were playing the best defense until Nowitzki’s Nuclear Reaction of a fourth quarter. As Andrew A McNeill from 48MoH had previewed, it would come down to the game of matchups. It turns out that, for now, we haven’t solved the Rubik’s Cube that is the Dallas Mavericks. But the rest of the league can’t stop the Spurs and how big of an offensive juggernaut they actually have become. After those three losses in early December that left the team 9-9, they’ve been playing at a .750 rate, and although they played against toilet scrubbers, they’ve improved immensely.

However, like I said before, these might be trying times if you’re a Spurs fan. They might lose a few games at first to over .500 teams, but have patience because they will pick up speed and start to get on a roll just in time for their February road trip. It will be interesting to watch.

by ZeusVizzle on Jan 10, 2010 10:47 AM CST reply actions

“The rest of the league can’t stop the Spurs”? Um, we do have 12 losses. The wins will come due to the parity in the league – the Nets, Knicks, Warriors. That seems to be how we’re playing it this year and it will probably squeak us into the playoffs.

My point (concern) is not about the winning percentage in December against “toilet scrubbers” but where the losses have come — quality opponents. Losses dating back to mid-November include: Dallas, Utah, Boston, Denver, Utah, Phoenix, Portland, Toronto and Dallas. I don’t care about the “toilet scrubbers” wins. We need quality wins against quality opponents. Lakers game on Tuesday will be very interesting.

by JustinBK on Jan 10, 2010 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

Very true argument. The Spurs do have 12 losses and all signs point to this coming stretch as the barometer for how far they have come in defense. If they do pile up the losses against the 12 games of competition .500 or better, things will turn to panic mode because we don’t want to hang around the Thunder, Rockets, Blazers, or Hornets when they get hot.

So, my point, if the Spurs rack up 6 more losses in the next 17 games, there should be a trade looming to bring an impact player like Antawn Jamison

by ZeusVizzle on Jan 10, 2010 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

Haha This preview was hilarious. A little we-are-all-going-to-hell mentality is just the elixer we Spurs fan need. Of course, winning would be better, but that’s out of the question.
Thanks for giving Tim the advantage over Yi. He earns that.

If less is more, imagine how much more more would be.
