Poll: Most exciting new Spur?

With all the changes to the Spurs' roster this summer it got me to wondering which new Spur has the fans most excited.

Star-divide

So I went to Spurs.com and copied the roster and deleted out the ones I remember from last season.  (If I made a mistake, well sorry.)

Now things will undoubtedly change as we see them play.  And of course not all of these players will make the roster come opening day.  But as of now, which new Spur are you most excited about?

It was a toss-up between RJ and Dice for me, but I went with RJ. He sort of fell off my radar in Milwaukee, so I’m interested in seeing how well he can still play.

First, I don’t think Ian should be on there. I would have voted for him but I don’t consider him new.

I voted for Haislip which some might see as odd so I thought I would explain my vote. RJ is the biggest/best addition but I see him as a known quantity. I know he is good. Similarly, McDyess and Ratliff are veterans and I don’t think they are suddenly going to have career years now that they are in SA. DeJuan Blair is a rookie and I’m excited to see him play, but despite what Pop and RC say, I’m doubtful of his minutes. He was impressive in summer league, but he also seemed really rough. That could have been coaching and lack of practice with the team and system though. McClinton, Williams, and De Colo are all non-events for me because even if they are on the roster during the season, they won’t see much playing time. I am very excited about De Colo in a year or two though. I think he is a really solid late second round prospect.

That leaves my vote, Haislip. He is the wild card. He is the unknown. He could be the X-factor. I know he is physically and athletically capable. He was a standout at Tennessee which is a decent program. He played limited minutes in the pros in tough situations and then goes to Europe and leads a quality team to good results while improving on his fundamentals. He supposedly is very hungry and is sacrificing some pay to be here. All of this screams Spurs journeyman archetype to me. I’m just really excited to see him play and to see what he has. I have my fingers crossed that altruistic stories of good deeds are soon to come (or not come because he is humble and keeps things quiet).

Everyone needs to get on the Haislip bandwagon. The other thing is he fills a role Bonner currently occupies. I like Bonner, but I’d like to see him knocked further down the bench, especially since he is likely gone after this season.

Oops. Sorry about Ian. I am not too familiar with him from last year.

“tough situations”
“knocked further down”

I think Haislip’s gonna be exciting this season. I like him, but he doesn’t keep his hands up, and rarely uses his long arms for jabs. His right straight could be a secret NBA offensive/defensive weapon we can unleash during the playoffs. Imagine Artest/Melo with his left eye shut tight, while all we get is a suspended Haislip and a fine deducted from his pay. I like.

I voted for Blair though.

based on your comments, Haislip would do a fine big shot Rob impersonation the next time we need to have some of the oppositions players suspended in order to gain a dubious and shamefull yet undoubtedly effective advantage.

McDyess

he’s the guy I wanted from the start of the offseason. I think he’s a perfect fit for the team and has been very underrated by a lot of Spurs fans.

It’s a toss up for me, but I voted RJ. I was extremely excited to get him. And I think he will be the most ‘exciting’. By exciting, I mean highlight reel worthy. I know that we Spurs fans are not about that, though.

When I heard that Rasheed Wallace ditched the Spurs to sign with Boston, I was a tad pissed. Later that week, when we signed McDyess, I learned- once again -that things happened for a reason. Because of his defense, and rebounding, no bs attitude, McDyess is my favorite.

Thanks Cap but I’m purple & gold through & through. I’m getting geared up for an epic title defense this season. I spend most time at the L A Times Laker Blog during the season. But it drives me nuts that you can’t respond directly to a comment and that the comments have to be approved by a moderator before they’re posted. The SBN Laker blog is still new and a work in progress.

(Thanks for the tip about bellasa. I have been scolded a couple of times. :)

Malik!!!!

Ok, I’ll fess up, I’m the 1 fool who voted for Hairston.

Here’s the deal: I’ve been thoroughly unimpressed with R-Mas doing anything but shooting and I love Fin, but he is getting a little long in the tooth.

Hairston had a great summer league and I’m hoping he can provide some gritty minutes behind RJ and Manu.

Besides, it has been entirely too long since I’ve been able to root for a Spur named Malik.

I voted Blair because I’m a huge whore for defense and rebounds. I’m excited to see if Blair can own the paint and bring the energy we need under the basket. (Add. note: I need to see a Blair block so vicious the victim/opponent breaks down and cries right in front of everybody.)

Jefferson is a close second because the idea of Tony, Manu, and Dickie-J running the fast break makes me giddy.

by Hirschof on Sep 4, 2009 10:57 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

hmmm…I thought Blair was weaker/rougher on the defensive end…..I don’t really know though. I thought his disgusting rebound totals were because of his incredible knack for crashing the offensive glass and being athletic enough to get his own rebounds off missed put-backs.

Draft Express lists these as weaknesses:

  • Ability to defend position at next level?
  • Defensive fundamentals
  • Lateral quickness
  • Pick and roll defense

His only uniquely defensive strength listed is “ability to get in passing lanes”. Draft Express also lists Conditioning and Athleticism as weaknesses which are kind of BS in my opinion though.

by BlaseE on Sep 4, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep in mind, that was prior to the summer – conditioning and athleticism are probably greatly improved since he lost all that weight prior to the draft. He’s been hitting the Spurs’ gym facilities since being drafted as well.

I think we don’t need him to score more than 15ppg, but I think he will. I predict our games this year to be higher scoring than previous ones. Hopefully our turtly pace doesn’t suffer, but it can be achieved through foul shouts, which Jefferson can generate and make too.
