We know the greats. I'll try to keep this brief and as close to 75 words as possible! Who is your favorite Spur? Ever. Ever? Yep, ever. I did my best with the nicknames. Your favorite can be your favorite for whatever reason you want, just tell us why. Is he the GOaT? Or a roleplayer? I included some front office folks, some players who gave the Spurs some good years in their prime, and a few memorable 12th men. Your favorite is not listed? Other.

Looks like the results are going to be similar to the last poll. My answer is still the same, although there’s a lot of great choices there. It’s nearly impossible to go wrong with a list like this.

Gotta go with Tim. He’s the reason I started liking the Spurs. I saw him at Wake and fell in love with his fundamental game. Before Duncan I was so young I just chose the Bulls because of Jordan.
I also have to give much respect to The Admiral for laying such a great foundation for this franchise. I really liked him too when I started rooting for the silver and black although I didn’t get to see his most dominant years.

Seems like Horry had a couple or three good years in L A. Once we got the Hou & Pho “exhaust” off him. So I voted for him. But then he fell to the dark side.

Timmy is the best player to suit up for the silver and black. He’s the best power forward ever—hands down, the reason we won those rings. But my vote goes to Bruce: You will not be underappreciated on my watch.

Timmeh is mah man. Manu and Robinson are probably tied, and lastly… I also like the Worm. He’s a thug, I know, but I love his blue-collar game.

I have to go with the Iceman, b/c he was such a unique player. To paraphrase coach Doug Moe: “Most of us poor stiffs don’t have it, but Ice has it.” I’ve never seen anyone who could score in so many different ways. His move to shooting guard at 6’7" forever changed the way that basketball was played.
On the night that Gervin scored 63 points to win the scoring title after David Thompson had scored 73 points earlier that day, most people forget that Ice sat out some of the third quarter and all of the fourth!
It’s just too bad that the Spurs of those years never made the Finals (though they came within a whisker in 1979). If they had, so many more people would have been able to appreciate the greatness of the Iceman.

Damn, this is a though one. I voted for Robinson only because he’s the reason I became a Spurs fan. He was my favorite NBA Player/Person for the longest time. Manu & Tim are a close second. :)

Hell yeah, I loved how Mario Elie lit a fire In David in ‘99. And who knows? If he hadn’t maybe Tim would be without that killer instinct like David had. I love the Admiral, but he didn’t have that fire to win it all.

Very true, 4H. David Robinson’s status, career, etc. would have been much greater if he hadn’t been loyal to SA. He rarely receives the credit he deserves.

About D. Robinson,
A. Could any of the Lakers teams potentially have won with David Robinson instead of Shaq?
B. Could any of the Rockets teams potentially have won with Robinson instead of Hakeem?
C. Could D. Robinson replace K. Malone on the Jazz rosters and lose to Jordan in the Finals?
My answer to most of those questions is yes. Sometimes, teams are just better/luckier, but Robinson, with or without supposed fire, could have won it with a champion level team. David Robinson was a beast before and after Duncan. It was just with Duncan, the team was able to get over the championship hump.
Now, could the Spurs have won with two Davids instead of a David and a Tim…? I’m pretty sure most PF’s could be guarded by Robinson back in ‘99. I think there are a lot more players that could have replaced Elie’s roster spot than David’s for the Spurs to still win a championship as well. Far be it for me to judge who someone picks as their favorite player, but if you’re main reason for picking Elie is that he lit a supposed fire under Robinson then your favorite player of all time must be Mark Madsen.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your comments, and I don’t mean to nitpick, but I think David wasn’t as much a beast anymore after Duncan arrived.
Pre-Duncan (minus the injury year): 25.5ppg, 11.8rpg, 3.09apg, 3.62bpg, 1.69spg, 38.07mpg = BEAST
Post-Duncan: 15.05ppg, 9.17rpg, 1.72apg, 2.22bpg, 1.07spg, 30.45mpg = mellowed down
Is it a slight to David that he mellowed down after Duncan arrived? Hell, no. He didn’t need to do as much anymore, but did what was needed to help the team win. (Not that his numbers weren’t good after Duncan, but that his stats were even waaay better before he shared the floor with his twin tower.)
Did he need help to win his first ring? Sure. But did he need help to be a beast? No. He could/would have dominated just as much with any other team. If the Clippers or the Nets had won the 1987 draft lottery (rather, if they won it and picked David; you know how the Clippers FO sometimes think—or not think), they would have had 50-win seasons as early as Robinson’s rookie year too. He’s that good.

Some of my thoughts on this:
A. Yes, just because you have Kobe the assassin on that team, who’d be the one to finish games or hit the big shot. David will most probably replicate Shaq’s numbers, or post a little lower or higher stats, whichever way you want to think of it.
B. Probably not. I am basing this on Dennis Rodman’s thoughts in his book. Yeah, I’m using a crazy person as reference but I believe there’s some truth to what Dennis said about the 1999 (or was it 2000?) western finals, when David folded up to the pressure when it was placed squarely on his shoulders. Remember, the Spurs had the best record in the league that time and the Rockets beat them primarily because of Olajuwon. If that was D. Rob on that Rockets team, I doubt he’d replicate what Hakeem did.
C. Malone, D-Rob, Shaq, Hakeem – whoever you put there with the Jazz would’ve lost simply because they were going up against MJ.

1995 actually was the year Houston took out the Spurs with Hakeem leading the way. As far as those questions go, I think I have to assume we are talking about the in-prime David b/c there is no way the 2000-2002 Laker teams win with the 2000-2002 Robinson in place of Shaq. With the prime Robinson? It’s quite possible, although I wonder if this hypothetical team could have gotten by in those series against POR in 2000 and SAC in ‘02. Those were obviously very close series, as was the ’94 Finals when the Rockets beat NYK. If there were any drop-off from the play of Shaq/Dream to the play of the Admiral, they probably wouldn’t win in those particular years. I don’t think David would match Hakeem’s insane ’95 playoff run, and therefore I would answer no on that one.
Filling in for the Mailman? They could probably still be in the FInals, and still lose to CHI.

I don’t know if my words were very clear, but when I mentioned drop-off from the play of Shaq/Dream to the play of the Admiral what I mean is that David would have to be just as good as Shaq or Hakeem were in those particular series in order for his team (hypothetical Lakers and Rockets teams featuring Robinson) to win a ’chip.
