Poll: Should the Spurs trade for Captain Jack ?
This topic has been covered over the course of the last few days by PTR as well as at another dedicated spurs website, http://www.48minutesofhell.com/ .However, there has not been a poll. Please cast your vote and feel free to interject.
Argument For:
This trade is a complete no brainer. Stephen is versed in San Antonios complicated offensive and defensive schemes and would contribute in a hurry. Hes an immediate upgrade at the shooting guard spot ( He played at the 2 guard spot in 03 ). He is worth any combination of Bonner/Fin/Mason. The improvement outweighs the fall off in depth.
Sure Stephens contract stinks. Some have speculated that it will hurt the potential re-signing of Manu Ginobili. But Manu has gone on record as saying that money is not the most important factor in his pro basketball decisions. We will be able to talk him into signing for less.
In addition , Stephen would be great insurance in the event that Manus injury proves to be chronic. Can you imagine what would happen if Manu were reinjured ? Our chances this season would go down the drain, whereas if we had Jackson, wed be in a much better position.
Why hold onto the expiring contracts when there will be no player better than Jackson available ?
The spurs would have a very formidable core for the next few years.
Argument against:
Stephens contract is horrendous, it would mortgage the Spurs for the next four years. More importantly , can you imagine trying to talk a spurs icon like Manu Ginobili into taking alot less money while we turn around and pay Stephen Jackson way more ? The gamble that Manu would sign for alot less is a big one. In addition, Stephen will be 32 years old by the beginning of next postseason. Can we really justify paying him an average of 9.5 million per season for the next four years AND potentially lose Manu Ginobili ?
This trade makes sense for about one year.

Poll of the week?

btw, alamo… did you get those tickets yet?

I have not purchased the tickets rikkido. The person selling those particular tickets will only sell all three at the same time. I would have to convince my lady friend to help me pay for hers, then find a third party willing to buy the third ticket. Hefty price but they seem like awesome seats.
Why do you ask ?
Sorry, I should have explained. SJax certainly hit some big shots for the Spurs in ‘03, esp. in the playoffs. He was also a turnover machine (and often the kind of turnovers that led to fast breaks for easy buckets). That 2002-’03 season was his best shooting year (regular season and playoffs), and he has shot under 42% for his career. He has a terrible tendency to take ill-advised shots, and I’m afraid that the freedom-to-chuck mentality that he got so used to with the Warriors would be very difficult to reign in. Plus, it could be that he is already past his prime. If you combine these things with his very burdensome contract (esp. the length of it), and I don’t think that the FO would pull the trigger. Besides, I think that the team as currently constructed is ready to go for the title.
Oh my gosh, I just read that Richard Jefferson is a free agent at the end of this season. I so did not know that….
He has a player option(~$14M). He’d be a fool not to take it – unless he wants to stick around, and enable the Spurs to give Manu and Tiago their due. But money-wise, he’d be a fool not to take it.

No to Jack. But I’m still not giving up on Battier.

I voted for the trade, but it is a risky gamble. I dont think his contract is bad, meaning that he is not overpaid, but it is bad contract for the spurs right now.
The main reasons I want Jack back is because of his defense and clutch shooting. He gives troubles to players like Dirk and he can be another guy to throw at kobe.
I voted yes, but only because of some weird poll inertia. I’m not sure what’s the right answer. I don’t envy our FO.
Great poll.

I really think theres at least a 50% chance that we lose Manu to free agency if we take on Jacksons contract. Main reason why I voted no.
Jackson would make great Manu insurance for the season, but i Dunno how wed be able to Pay Richardson AND keep Manu if we sign Jackson….I dont know crap about the cap so I guess it may be possible.
Richard+Jefferson=Richardson?

Dudes, you are not making it easy for me to choose. I love all of these — the unintentional capitalization of “Pay”, the mixing of the real first name and misspelled last name of “Jeffard Richerson” and the one name wonder of “Richardson.”
Since I can’t decide, I think it’s best that I do a mash-up and give the JTU to “Pay Richerson.” First, it pays homage to the initial mistake, second it includes a bit of all of them and finally, there are two references to the bloated contract we took when we signed him. Ladies and gentlemen of PtR, I submit to you Pay Richerson – then latest in an ever increasing list of potential nicknames for our new SF.
This is a nickname and so it’s not technically part of the Lexicon, and therefore, not strictly under my purview, but I gotta say I’m liking this one a lot.

Ok fairly sure now it is death of a salesman. Never read the book, watched the play or movie. Guess what gave it away? (if its even right)

Well, I guess I gave it away myself – months ago, when I named the image.
Bad on me, but I’ll still make good, LE. Which would you prefer? A post in your honor, or one on a topic of your choosing?
But it’s not Hoffman. It’s from a stage version, I believe.

Manu makes 10 or 11 million next year so its not like we are signing him and adding a salary. Duncan’s salary goes down by 2.5 million next year because it was structured to coincide with the FA market in 2010. I think the Spurs can make a very good offer to Manu, but they may have to give him one more year than other bidders.
+1
actually duncan’s salary goes down 3.3 M next year (according to shamsports ) I dont think that Manu’s contract is oing to be a problem. The real problem is that the spurs are going to in the luxury tax over next 2 years until RJ becomes a free agent.
Love some of the intangibles he brings to the table, but he’s too much of a streaky shooter and I’d rather have the cold-blooded Mason and/or Finley when it comes down to crunch time. How soon we forget what they’ve done for the Spurs!
Defensively he’d be marginally better, but I think the team improved on that end this off season.
xman130…
Yup, alot of promise on this team. If manu is healthy we are a very serious force. Good enough to make the WFC at the very least.
But to be honest, this team has such potential , that we maybe can compete even if Manu does get reinjured ( Yes, of course our chances would plummet, but wed be exponentially better than last season )
It’s not right to even mention such a possibility. Please show some respect to The Sickness, alamobro.
I expect better from you.

Not that it means anything, but I’ve been keeping a close eye on this poll, and although majority is still in favor of no trade, there has been (I believe) atleast a 10% jump in the YES category in the past few days. (Maybe due to Ian’s latest injury? Minor, also.)
