Matthew Powell

I guess you could say this is an ode to this Web site's founder. Powell has since moved on to other things, but it's impressive to think what this site has become--so many users, posts and comments. And it all started at this blogspot location. Since then, the site became "Pounding the Rock." Eventually, it moved onto the Sports Blog Nation.

Star-divide

I think it is safe to say Matthew didn't foresee this much of an explosion from his original idea to start writing his personal opinions about his favorite basketball team (even if those opinions and ideas included trading Ginobili for Kevin Martin, or calling Michael Finley a dependable defender when we signed him). Who knows if Matt has checked out the Web Site recently or not? If he has, I would guess he would be impressed by what's going on. In fact, before "retiring" from PTR, I'm sure he was surprised by the quantity of witty, well-thought-out comments. And it all started with him. Others, such as Michael (stampler), really added to the quality, quantity and depth of writing. Since the blog's inception, there's been no looking back, and the snowball-like growth of PTR has continued.

So kudos to the founder of the best sports blog on the internets, with the best logo, too (based on the quote below, which is found at Spurs HQ... and by the way, pounding the rock into the shape of a Larry O'Brien trophy? Simply awsome! Quite the logo, if you ask me!)

When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

And yes, we all owe a debt to The Founder. This place would never have become what it has without him, or Stampler, or (more recently) ATS. Cheers!

I forget to mention this in the post, but I think we need to put Powell’s “The Pathology of Manu Ginobili” on the ‘featured stories’ list. Manu himself said something on his blog about liking that post.

What happened to his James White post? Unfeatured?

It don’t think it would be too much of a stretch if Manu himself logged onto PtR to thank Matthew. I found the story he wrote. Excellent story btw. Anyways, I read some of the comments and one commenter and first time PtRer, thanks Matthew for the story and says that Manu, through his blog, thanks him too. Naturally, I then clicked on the commenter’s profile and it was his first and only comment on PtR ever. I’m not sure how often that happens, and perhaps that’s the key to this whole thing, how often to we get one time, and only one time commenters. Anyways, I know this is a stretch, but I’m a dreamer. Or, maybe it isn’t Manu because he’s already a regular here at PtR! Everyone post pics of yourselves to see which one comes up as Manu Ginobili! =]

Everyone post pics of yourselves

You do realize that’s been done before at PtR, right? Although maybe it’s time to bring it back.

Manu wouldn’t speak in 3rd person about himself. He does post in his forum from time to time, though.

Wow, are you not aware that JRW is actually Cherokee Parks? I thought everyone knew that.

so thoughtful and serene

This is my favorite portrait of me, because I almost look capable of thinking deep thoughts in this pic. Almost, that is, until you see that I’ve had my fingers tattooed, and notice the amount of hair product it takes to support my hedgehog on the go look.

The really scary thing is that I said that as a joke, but looking at the pic it really isn’t that far off. Except for the whole “massively tattooed near-7footer” thing, you could pull it off.

That’s like saying (something strange) (previous PtR meme) (witty analogy) (bust on CMoney) (Spurs reference) (self-deprecating jab) (bust on Cherokee) (pithy ending).

he’s not dead, but it looks like his username recently changed to “sungo.” I clicked on the link someone posted about some PTR T-shirts from an old post. I thought the post had been written by Powell, but it said it was written by “sungo.” So I figured my memory had failed me. Then I saw “The Pathology of Manu Ginobili” and it said sungo was the author. At that point, I knew the name had changed.

Conspiracy theory

If you look carefully at the word SUNGO and rearrange its syllables you get:

GO SUN

which in the plural is GO SUNS.

I think he might be in a secret undercover mission assisting Steve Kerr in the destruction of the Phoenix franchise.
