Happy Birthday to the Admiral
Today, August 6th, is David Robinson's Birthday. I know many of us here started rooting for the Spurs because of Mr. Robinson so today I would like to wish him a very Happy Birthday! I know we've kind of done this before, but if you've got a good Admiral story feel free to share.
My story is fairly recent. My niece goes to school with one Mr. Robinson's boys. We went to the Christmas play this last year. My niece is 7 so this is a little kids play. The kids were all doing really well telling the story of the birth of Christ and singing songs and so on. It was then time for the part of the story where Cesar, the Emperor of Rome, comes and declares that he wanted a census. Guess who's played Cesar? That's right, 7 foot 1 inch David Robinson comes out in full Roman garb. It was great! He didn't take over the play, but it was great to see him interact with the kids. You could tell he really enjoys being with the kids. My wife and I got a picture (which I can't find) with him afterward and he was as nice as he could be.
That was the 3rd or 4th time I've met Mr. Robinson and he has always been classy and nice. I think he defined what most of us like about the Spurs. Hard working, classy and always humble. I think the Spurs have kept up with getting classy guys like David Robinson and they obviously have kept the winning up. David Robinson will always have a special place in my heart, to me he started it all. Have a great and blessed birthday Mr. Robinson!

My story is more lame. I got him to autograph a napkin once at a restaurant when I was 10. But that was a very proud moment for me at the time. I only wish I could have met him later on, when I became a more serious fan.
Re-sign Bruce Bowen!
Not a napkin, but still...
I once had Robert Horry sign a sheet of receipt paper that I pulled out of the register I was working at the GAP when he came in to pick up some clothes he was buying for a buddy of his. This was his 2nd year in Houston. My co-worker said I looked so nervous that she thought I was about to ask him out. That was the day after he got 7 steals in a game against the Clippers, IIRC.

I interviewed Horry (briefly) in the visiting locker room after a Spurs-Jazz game. And Pop made fun of me.
…That one deserves more than two measly sentences, Gino20. Elaborate please.

Never met Mr. Robinson in person (regretfully), but my mom did get his autograph when he visited Randolph AFB in 1990. She still has the book he signed, too.

Here’s my lame story: during the 2005 finals, at the end of the three game stretch in Detroit, i caught a connecting flight in Dallas(or Houston) from the east coast. Mr Robinson and his kids were on my flight back to SA! He towered over everyone at the boarding gate but made no fuss and to my surprise he actually sat in coach and not in first class. As i walked past him to my even coachier seat in the far back i tried to look and figure out how he was able to squeeze his tall stature in coach. I don’t know how he did it but somehow he was able to.
by the way, he gets inducted into the hall of fame September 11, in Springfield, MA. the day before my birthday. Ya know, just in case anyone is looking for that last minute gift idea….

A young Dave
I met David Robinson right after he was drafted by the Spurs and still in the Navy. He came to Mare Island Naval Shipyard to play(not sure why the Navy team was there). At the time I was player/coach for one of the shops on base(shop 31). Met Dave in the gym office then later that night played against him and the Navy team. Of course we didn’t fair well against them. Side note: At the time my mother worked for Artis Gilmore and Willie Andersen back in San Antonio and is still a rabid fan of the Spurs today. Dave is a class act!!
