Stephen Jackson Sweepstakes? (48moh post)
EDIT: BlasE's post already started a conversation on this question but I'll leave this up just in case some of you people need to be updated on 48 moh.
From our soulmates over at 48 minutes of hell.
As many of you may already know, Stephen Jackson has stated publicly that he would like to be traded by the Golden State Warriors. He mentioned the Texas Three-Step, Cleveland, and New York as potential landing spots. This all begs the question: should the Spurs attempt to trade for Stephen Jackson?
Well, PtR junkies... should they?
Jackson back in silver and black? Some of us would be shocked too.

I’d really hate to see Mason go…

The problem is it moves $6 million expiring into $7 million next year and growing each year after. We have to resign Manu and sign Tiago next offseason. It is definitely a roster improvement but I’m not sure it is worth the cost or even needed.
Lets say that a trade is made and we ship Mason/Finley/Bonner or some other combo out the door…
is it fair to say the team is probably prepared/settled/ready/etc. to move on without Manu? (I hope not)

No, its not fair to say that. We need to lock Manu into a 3 year deal for like 21 million total asap. By asap, I mean before he rips through the league and is holding a championship trophy over his head and his stock is at a ridiculous high. Right now, his stock is unfairly low coming off the injury season so we should sign him now. In 2010, a lot of teams will have set aside money for Wade, LeBron, and Bosh, and when teams miss on those players, they will headhunt Manu and other players with all that money. There is an amount of money where business is business and we can’t ask him to stay for less.
That isn't what I asked
I’m asking IF the team made a trade.

…not whether or not we need to do now financially (team salary and Manu’s price tag).
If the team was to kill the available money waiting in 2010… then what would that say outside of “win now?”

I answered your question and then added what I thought about Manu.
is it fair to say the team is probably prepared/settled/ready/etc. to move on without Manu? (I hope not)
No, it is not fair to say that the team is prepared/settled/ready to move on without Manu IF the trade went through. That is what I said in the first place. So if we are not ready to move on without Manu, then signing him now would be advantageous. I was clearly outlining this as a related aside to your question.
Your reply read differently to me.

Anyways… I agree on signing sooner than later. That has really been the wish of most fans since, well, almost a year (if not longer). But mostly because of 2010 fears and not reduction of value.

Hirschof, I think the only scenario in which this trade is a boon , is if we can somehow convince Manu to resign for alot less ( making a big assumption that his injury is not chronic), after bringing the captain aboard. Then the spurs are set for a few more years.
However , if we lose a healthy manu at the end of the season because of such a deal, then id veto it. Wheres a crystal ball when you need it….
Part of me wants Jackson because of his skill set and athleticism but the contract and the attitude kill that.
And if Jackson coming to the Spurs means in some way the Spurs will part with Manu, I’m against it.

Moving away from money and Manu. I also think trading away Mason, a bright spot from the 08/09 roster, would be a mistake. Yeah, yeah…. he vanished in the Dallas series (along with almost everyone else) but how many times have we seen first timers (in the playoffs) disappear? Quite a bit…

Another factor is that Mason is a free agent at the end of the season. The Spurs are raising his value (as usual) and resigning him could be a pain. He could walk for more money if he wants. Trading him for Jackson who is locked up for the window might be worth it. Personally, I think the Spurs should stick with what we have until we see some games. I see Jackson as being a mid-season trade for the Warriors and not a preseason move anyways.
I think another team, in desperation, will get to him before the deadline.

Josh Howard’s contract expires at the end of the year so I’m sure that appears attractive to Golden State. And unlike San Antonio, the Dallas Cubans make rash decisions that may/may no be beneficial to the team. San Antonio is already solid and should/will wait. Jackson is an option just in case something happens.

The deadline or the season?
If he wants to leave, they will definitely move him sometime this season.
The deadline in Feb.

This is a pickle.
First off, great analysis by everyone here and over at 48MoH. I can’t say I thought we’d be having this conversation anytime soon! ;)
The Manu and Splitter contract situations put a different spin on things. I forgot about Mason’s contract expiring. Three expiring contracts is appealing to any team. And I know I am guilty of downtalking Jack in the past, and I’m hesitant, of course, given his reputation. But…he can play, and I agree he is an immediate upgrade over both Fin and Bonner. I’d have to go for a package that’d involve definately either Bonner and Finley stright up for Jackson’s contract, or possibly Mason and one or the other.
That being said, Jack needs to have his attitude in the right place, though. No bs, no getting tossed, no fights, no off-court incidents. He needs to act like a Spur, and play smart.

One thing gives me pause: Marcus Haislip. We have no idea what this guy is capable of, but his situation is similar to Jack’s when he first came aboard with the Spurs. Also, he seems to have some of the same traits(athletic, good shooter) as Jackson. I think the FO knows a lot more about Haislip than we do, but what if he turns out to be just as good a deal for us as Jack was back then?

Golden State Warriors Salaries per Sham Sports
Expiring contracts should look very appealing to this franchise given how many long term contracts they have. If they had Mason and Bonner, they would have 4 of the best 3 point shooters from last year along with Morrow and Azubuike. Marcus Williams could interest them too since he can supposedly run the offense as a point forward and Curry can play more off the ball then.
There are way too many question marks for me to agree to a trade like this. First off is the financial aspect. Is the FO really thinking about committing to that large of a salary? (although I think he’s slightly underpaid for his talent level) Both Manu and Splitter have to be signed next season and we need them both (think of the future here, post- Duncan) Then there’s the question of if he would be willing to come off the bench behind RJ (unless Mason is dealt and he starts at 2) And lastly, no one knows how good this team is. Do we even need to make a deal like this? Who knows, Haislip could be a 13-15 ppg guy off the bench. Blair could average a double double. The team might hold opponents under 80 all season while scoring 90+. My point is that no one knows how effective this team is right now. Lets wait till we answer those questions before we start talking trades.

When I looked at all the trade possibilities from all the teams he requested, only Dallas seems to be an option since the other teams (Spurs included) would have to give up key players with expiring contracts. Since the Warriors are looking for expiring contracts, and the Mavs have plenty, they could work something out.

I shudder to think of Captain Jack with Dallas. That team is already incredibly dangerous, we don’t need them getting even better.

Is this FEAR I’m witnessing? I get your point but still, I have faith that we can still beat them. (my sig explains)

Bonner, Finley, and Mason all have expiring contracts (+$9,500,000) and I would say only Mason is a “key” player we would lose… which is the role Jackson would be filling.
The Mavs don’t have nearly as many expiring contracts. Howard or Terry would have to go in order to bring in Jackson and one/two deep bench players. (I think).

Quick question on the Mavs does anyone know what their starting 5 is? Is Marion playing the 4 n Dirk the 5? Is he coming off the bench? Whats the deal with that?
"I've got Tim (Duncan) and you don't. That's the difference." -Gregg Popovich
Kidd, Howard, Marion, Dirk, and Dampier is my guess. Barea, Terry, and Gooden will see heavy minutes off the bench.
Howard at the 2? Seems kinda odd

Quinton Ross or Greg Buckner? They could start Terry and Howard with Dirk, Kidd, and Dampier. That puts a lot of pressure on Gooden and Marion to score though. Marion can guard most positions so I think they have a quite a bit of flexibility.
He didn’t mention them but the Suns could be a very interesting ending place for him. It would pain me to see it though.
He wants a ring so very doubtful he’s going there

Golden State gets to make the trade though, not him. Phoenix still has Nash, Richardson, and Amare. Lopez and Hill are good role players too. They also have rabid fans that won’t want to see them losing so they could make the move just to try anything to get them out of that 10-7 range in the West. Kerr also played with Jack in SA.
Of course he is Dj. He leaps through the roof, fills the basket up and avoids contact on the defensive end as good as any GS player of the last decade.
Perfect for Nellieball. Let’s not forget he’s injury prone lately, too.

All ribbing aside, Ive sometimes wondered what kind of player Amare would be if he cared to play defense and learned one or two moves on the Block….
I guess you could also say " I wonder what kind of player Ai would be if he wasnt A i "
I remember dropping my jaw and being unable to say a word for five minutes and 21 seconds after that block on Tim.
