Wallpaper: Vitruvian Manu (updated)
BlaseE asked that I submit a wallpaper to help contribute to his and LatinD's wishes for new desktop decor.
LatinD and I want to make wallpapers a more regular post, so if you have an idea, post it and LatinD will feature it on the Wallpapers page linked on the left. It doesn't have to be explicitly Spurs related either. You can focus on PTR or something PTR related.
While mine isn't shiny and sharp as BlaseE's submission or as fiery as LatinD's... I hope this submission will find a temporary home on a few screens.
May I present to you, Vitruvian Manu:

Update
Apologies for any distortion (shouldn't be much) Next time I will start at 1600 x 1200 and go down. I went the wrong direction.
---
Thoughts/comments/critiques/etc.? Please let me know if you see anything I should fix. I will post different sizes later.Credit
Thanks to Sungo for the Pathology of Manu and to the awesome dude(ette?) who drew Obi Wan Ginobili.
Oh, and Leonardo Da Vinci. I hope he doesn't sue me.

Something along the lines of Roger being a ninja. With shuriken-basketballs and the like.

Or a take on his jedi nickname Mace Windu. Make it kinda Spurs-meets-Star Wars-meets-Samuel L Jackson?

And then there’s Obi Wan Ginobili… I’m sensing a theme here.

Great desktop idea and execution. Excellent title. Good placement of the logo for modesty’s sake.
I just love the whole thing.

Thank you
to everyone for the comments. This is the first wallpaper I have ever done (I think) and I’ll try to get something else out down the road. At the moment I have some projects for a small business in San Antonio I must complete first.
Thanks again.

How is taking a world famous sketch, editing it (including covering the crotch area) make this “just plain gay?” Was Da Vinci’s work gay?
You have a half naked (assuming) man as your avatar… is that gay?
Please explain.
I’m not taking this as an attack… but I cringe at strange/faulty logic.

I don’t know about Leonardo, but this use of his work is definitely gay.
If you’re familiar with the movie from which my avatar derives, than you will know it is definitely gay as well.

Oh, I see… so you are looking for stuff to be gay, or rather, gay stuff? So it isn’t the work but you instead.

You two are treading on thin ice here. I too want to know what Slowpoke meant by calling it gay. Was he using gay as a derogatory term or was he making a joke that I don’t understand? I’m not sure.
However, your second response is a bit offensive and provocative as well, even if it is sarcastic.
This is very similar to me giving Big50 crap about calling somebody a little girl (or something like that) and then I crossed the line in responding to him. I made my point, but I took it too far.

There is a naked picture of Manu Ginobili posted

All righty then.

Anything could be of interest to the gay community. He could be wearing a parka and he still “might be” an interest to the gay community… Anything could be of interest to the gay community or the hetero community or the etc etc etc.
Its a shop of the Vitruvian Man (originally drawn in 1487)…a work relating ideal human proportions with geometry. Science and art. I didn’t come in here posting a sexually enticing pic of Manu.
If you don’t like it, fine. That doesn’t bother me but don’t go making a claim that its “gay.” Derogatory or not, it isn’t and I believe that is a slight insult to homosexuals/gay community/whatever PC term is the best.

ugh...
Just to be clear.
That is like saying every picture of a woman is sexual enticing to a straight man. Not every picture of (insert gender) is of sexual interest to a gay (insert gender).
You didn’t say “might be considered.” You said “just plain gay.”

I’m going to try to answer seriously, Slowpoke. And trust me that I mean no offense.
You do know of the Vitruvian Man, right? Hirschof described it perfectly – and it’s world famous, too. He even made the circle/square into a basketball. Personally, I thought it was brilliant. And even the original drawing (which shows all of the “man bits”) is a classical artistic drawing. As Hirschof said, “science and art”. Do you consider Michelangelo’s David to be “gay”?

Actually, I’m heartened that folks slowed it down, tried to explain, responded relatively respectfully, etc. etc. There are a couple of things going on here:
1) The word “gay” has become one of those words that gets used in a lot of different ways. It’s like that riff that one comic did on the word “dude,” and how the way it’s pronounced can range from meaning “Damn, you’re awesome!” to “Are you hiding behind the door with a knife?” I had a great talk once with some gay friends who even use the word as in “That’s so gay” and, you know, it’s one of those things.
2) For some reason I’m seized with a desire to make a webpage along the lines of the fabulous Stuff White People Like and call it Things Straight People Worry About Saying.
3) I had a lot to drink at my little brother’s birthday party earlier tonight.
WWTD?
I’m glad people didn’t call for a ban on the word gay, as in, Transformers 2 was gay. Because I know how these things go, first it’s gay, then it’s the word retarded, and then you can’t make fetus jokes. It’s a slippery slope.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
Guys, see, these kinds of sensitive, off-topic discussions would never happen in Hipuks’ wallpaper post. Perhaps someone could argue for discrimination against the elderly, but that’s pushing it.

There is a really great and catchy Morrissey song called Piccadilly Palare off the Bona Drag album. I looked up what it meant and Palare is an alternate spelling of Polari which is basically gay slang derived from the British acting community so they could openly speak with each other in public without fear. Bona means good and Drag means clothes by the way so the album title is Nice Outfit in Polari. Well, when I was reading up on it there is a word, naff, in Polari which literally means “Not Available For F’ing”. So if an attractive person was straight or married, a gay person would call him/her a Naff. It took on the meaning of hetero and is used in a negative context. Someone in Polari might say, “Don’t be so naff” in the same way Americans call things gay. I found that interesting. Obviously naff isn’t mean spirited in the way gay can be used though.
Also Wiki: Polari
I reread my comment and two clarifications:
One, I’m not saying Americans are the only people that call things gay, but as an American, I know we do.
Two, I think naff can be mean-spirited as an insult in the way calling someone an asshole or douche or whatever would, but it doesn’t have any heterophobic undertones. So if someone calls you an “f’ing naff”, I would take that as mean spirited.
Lines from the song with Polari meanings in brackets:
The piccadilly palare
Was just silly slang
Between me and the boys in my gang
So bona to vada [good to see]. oh you
Your lovely eek [face] and
Your lovely riah [hair]
The piccadilly palare
Was just silly slang
Between me and the boys in my gang
Exchanging palare
You wouldnt understand
Good sons like you
Never do.
Jeez.
What was intended as a quick Seth Rogen-throwaway has emerged into quite a discussion. I come onto blogs like this to get away from this sort of thing, but I guess I will try to quickly explain myself.
First, with regard to Michelangelo’s David, my answer is yes. Michelangelo was gay. Doesn’t mean that it isn’t great art, but art can serve more than one purpose.
With regard to the Hirschov creation, I wasn’t saying I didn’t like it. I was making a joke because it is gay in the same way “Ben Hur” is gay if you are looking it within the context of The Celluloid Closet.
I mean, you’ve got a website dedicated to male sport, which takes place in a gymnasium, and if you know The Republic you can see where I’m going here…
…in addition to which the site specifically bans allegedly “provocative” female cheerleader pictures, but gives thumbs up to a nude depiction of Ginobili, under the banner heading Pounding the Rock. I understand people disagree, but this strikes me as campier than Rufus Wainwright singing “How Long Has This Been Going On?”
It just seemed like an obvious joke to me. Senses of humor differ and I apologize. I still think it’s amusing, the same way Terence McNally poked fun at these types of identifications in Love Valour Compassion when he has a character remark about Tchaikovsky: “Who did he think he was fooling, writing chord changes like this?!?”
With regard to any feelings I have about homosexuality, my brother is gay. I hang out with drag queens. I wrote a play about Michel Foucault called “Ouibliette” which specifically deals with his S&M personal life in context of “Discipline and Punish.” A good book I can recommend that deals with some of this, albeit in a pop cultural context, is “From Revolution to Revelation” by my friend Tara Brabazon. I will admit this is somewhat self-serving on my part because I am quoted at length in the book.
It is sort of interesting that all of this comes up also because my other brother just published a novel about San Antonio that deals with a number of gay/bisexual characters and the sexual ambivalence of the somewhat predatory underworld. It’s called “Six Inch Crimes.”
Anyway, all I’m saying is that in labeling something gay, it doesn’t automatically have to be in a derogatory sense. It could be placing it within a historical context of things which have been associated with homosexuality, like Freddie Mercury-mustaches and Valley of the Dolls. Such was my intention.

If Michelangelo was gay (yeah, I’ve read about it, seems pretty solid) and he really meant to excite men and women alike with his sculpture of the perfect man… then he really didn’t do us any favors, eh?
