NBA Free Agency Day 2 Open Thread - San Antonio McDyess Edition

So today is the second day that teams are free to sign free agents.  Time for more discussion.  I would put all the info before the jump, but this isn't Blazersedge. [LatinD wouldn't survive a day with the way they format things over there.]

Star-divide

Here's some of the things that happened yesterday:

I'm sure there's more, but it's hard to keep up.  Anyway, lots to discuss - comment away.

cavs way overpaid for verajao

i dont know why peopl like this guy he sucks and hes goofy

by JoshuaV on Jul 9, 2009 4:56 AM CDT up reply actions

he doesnt suck, he is starter material for sure. Still, they overpaid.

dude he sucks honestly

by JoshuaV on Jul 9, 2009 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

not sure what your definition of “starter material” is, but they guy is pretty limited offensively and his defense usually consists of taking a charge. He’s a great energy guy and he seems to be improving from year to year…but almost 10 figures a year for this guy is insane.

by AFBlue82 on Jul 9, 2009 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree, is totally insane. But dude is not a bad player. With a couple of extra minutes he could average 10 & 10 while playing great D (and some anoyying flops). Just check the rosters around the league, and youll se Varejao is starter material. We had bonner as our starting center for the whole season for chrissakes

we had bonner as our starter

and we were bounced in the first round of the playoffs.

But I get what you’re saying…that’s why I said it depends what your definition of a starter is. Mason is technically a starter, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best 2-man on the team.

by AFBlue82 on Jul 9, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

everyone knows drew shouldve strated over matt…pops ego and pride prevented that

by JoshuaV on Jul 9, 2009 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

So, a guy we picked up off of the free agent waiver wire who was recently injured should have been starting over a guy who had been one of the league leaders in 3-point % for most of the season? Really?

Bonner started because he provided spacing for Tim and Tony to begin games. It’s that simple. Notice how little Drew played when Tim played. They clogged the lane when together and the help defender was always closer when the two of them are on the floor at the same time.

Thats true, still check a lot of bigs who got 25 or 30+ minutes on the league last season (starters or not). Varejao is better than a lot of them

how much more minute does he need for 10 & 10 honestly hes clumsy and most of his stats come from him just happening to be standing around

exactly your typical NBA center, but at least the clumsy varejao knows how to defend

A guy like Manu or Hedo has to bust his ass off to get a 10+ million contract, while the dampiers, Bynums, dalemberts and varejaos of the world get money for seemingly nothing. It baffles me, specially in a supposed tough economy and wit h the salary cap on the downside.

Funny, I almost mentioned the upcoming chess match in the other thread where I busted on your “propper”. (rik’s got your back over there, btw.)

So, book rec’s, eh? Well, if you haven’t read everything that Douglas Adams has ever written, then you’d need to get started on that right away. Five books in the Hitchhikers Trilogy (yes, it’s not aptly named) and the two Dirk Gently novels.

But, since that’s a lot of material, if you’ve looking for a quicker read, then you must read “The Old Man and the Sea.” I simply cannot stress how much this book rocks. It’s a quick read, beautiful, eloquent and the first time I read it, the ending simply shattered me.

Also, you need to be sure you’ve read Watership Down. Yes, it’s the book where rabbits are the main characters. But this ain’t no bunny book. I’ve never, NEVER recommended this book to anyone who’s ever come back to me with anything besides, “You’re right. I really enjoyed that.” Also, after multiple readings, I realized that it’s a study in leadership. Who knew?

That oughtta get you started. If you’ve already read all of those as well as Lord of the Rings, then just email me and I’ll get you some more.

Yes. But its the irony in so many cases. I respect nature and I am going to destroy it.

Its not an exact parallel. But my point is, the man goes for more than what he needs just because its the biggest fish and he is thrilled about the hunt and obdurate as the hunter. Wouldn’t that be a hunter’s ego more than the need.

I’m just going to ask you to read it again. If it still strikes you the same way, we’ll absolutely have this conversation.

If we were talking about hunting for sport, I’d have no argument with you whatsoever. But the situation in Old Man… is far, far different than that. I don’t want to say more, b/c I know ManuWar hasn’t read it, and I don’t want to ruin anything.

What do you think they were looking for?

They made a pitch to Wallace and he decided to go to Boston. Dice was their Plan 1b and they got him. It’s not like there was some superstar frontcourt player willing to take $5M a year to play with the Spurs.

Spurs traded for Richard Jefferson…that was the BIG move of the off-season. When they traded him, I’m sure all they wanted to do was to re-assemble their frontcourt depth and upgrade where possible, which they accomplished by adding Dice…a better overall player than KT.

by AFBlue82 on Jul 9, 2009 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Plus, the young guys will get to learn from Timmeh and McDyess for a couple of years. We now have depth, and Blair/Haislip won’t be required to produce at a high level right off the bat.

This is good. McDyess will help guard the big men and can hit a nice mid-range jumper. He’s like a better(said hopefully) version of Kurt Thomas. I’ll be happy if that’s what he is. I think this signing is going to bode well for the Spurs. Antonio is a good guy who will work hard, plus it doesn’t hurt that we’ve got an energy guy behind him in Blair.

Marion to Dallas…that team is so weird. They don’t know what they want to be. So Houston still has a MLE to play with is that what I’m reading?

the proposed Booze deal

I guess I understand the motivation for each team….Detriot’s frontcourt is depleted and Utah doesn’t want to lose Boozer in free agency next summer without compensation…BUT, there are definite downsides to this deal for both teams.

On Detriot’s side, the downside is the versatility of Rip. Yes, they have a new look backcourt with Stuckey and Gordon, but Rip Hamilton had become a VERY dependable scorer for them and he could play either the 2 or the 3 for them.

If it were me, I’d look for a taker for Prince…a guy who will never dominate or be a go-to guy.

On Utah’s side, they risk losing both Boozer AND Millsap…and even if they match an offer for Millsap, they’re likely to overpay. It also probably affects the playing time for their most underrated player, Ronnie Brewer.

Besides, I don’t think either team puts itself in the “elite” category with the deal.

by AFBlue82 on Jul 9, 2009 10:39 AM CDT reply actions

by FreshmakerDTM on Jul 9, 2009 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

not saying they wouldn't, but...

the rumor is that the Blazers are working up a “toxic” offer, likely front-loaded or with major trade kickers that make Millsap impossible to deal in out years. Even if the Jazz match the offer, it’s not going to be one that they enjoy signing.

you’re going to bat over a player that is likely fringe-average at this point in his career. IF the Spurs trade Finley and he doesn’t come back, then I’d say Stack becomes an option. But at this point, it’s just filling out the roster.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind at all if Jefferson averaged 38 minutes a game and they played Manu at SF the other 10. That way the Spurs wouldn’t have to worry about Fin or Stack or WIlliams or Hairston or whoever.

It could be interesting to do as we used to: have the latest post shown completely on the front page, and then change it to a more manageable size once another story’s posted. I believe we only started breaking the posts because of the game threads.

Then again, maybe having to click on the link to read the full version encourages first-time posters to leave their comments. What do you think?

All we need is a healthy team, especially a healthy manu to get out of the west/

by spursfan87 on Jul 9, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

"healthy" is the key...

in any sport with a salary cap, it always comes down to who’s healthy at the end of the year.

We had a pretty good run, but the last two years, injuries have cost us (and I suppose the year of TD’s plantar fascitis too…). LA can make their case for Bynum’s injuries, but frankly, at some point that becomes the norm – and other than that, they’ve been remarkably lucky – this year not only in their own health, but in others’ injuries.

Whether that luck continues or not, and whether ours changes or not are probably the biggest factors in who moves out of the West.

What these changes have done for us is get us in the mix where if we stay healthy we can definitely compete and possibly win. They have just as many “ifs” as we do – they may be better IF they retain Odom, IF all their key players stay healthy, IF Artest doesn’t kill anyone, IF team chemistry is as unimportant next year as it was this year…

Surprising good news: Tim Varner is reporting that Haislip signed for the vet minimum, NOT the BAE.

What BAE. Same as LLE?

If true, this means, we are not done yet in the making waves category.

by LionZion on Jul 9, 2009 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, apparently all of us who were calling it the LLE were idiots. Varner knows his stuff, though.

You mean we don’t have our lower-level exception? I think we do, rik.

Hm, it seems you’re right, and BAE and LEE are the same thing. Had no idea.

that’s great news, with the BAE we can still get a pretty decent player

Wow, a lot of stuff to read here.

There was something about getting Stackhouse?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Remember the take-down of Manu?? Noooooo!!!!!!

Any talk about getting Bowen, Thomas or Oberto back?? (if they are waived)
As guys that know the system, 1 or 2 might still have been handy and have experience (though declining ability and limited roster spots now)

The three of them could be useful for short stints against some matchups.

Out of those three, Bowen would be the most useful. We really don’t need to add a 6’10" or under post player whose feet are glued to the floor. If we are getting a post, it should be a 7 footer who can block shots, or maybe a decent offensive player and rebounder (like Gooden) if he can be signed for cheap.

With Blair though we already have 6 post players.
