NBA Free Agency Day 2 Open Thread - San Antonio McDyess Edition
So today is the second day that teams are free to sign free agents. Time for more discussion. I would put all the info before the jump, but this isn't Blazersedge. [LatinD wouldn't survive a day with the way they format things over there.]
Here's some of the things that happened yesterday:
- The Spurs will sign "San" Antonio McDyess
- The Bulls will sign Jannero Pargo
- Shawn Marion is headed to the Mavericks in possibly the most complex sign-and-trade I've ever seen
- "Birdman" Andersen re-signs with the Nuggets
- The Rockets get an injury exception in Lieu of the MLE to sign Ariza
- Zaza Pachulia is coming back to the Hawks
- A Carlos Boozer - Rip Hamilton trade might be in the works
- The Cavaliers re-sign Anderson Varejao and added Anthony Parker
- Dahntay Jones will sign with the Pacers
I'm sure there's more, but it's hard to keep up. Anyway, lots to discuss - comment away.

he doesnt suck, he is starter material for sure. Still, they overpaid.
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
not sure what your definition of “starter material” is, but they guy is pretty limited offensively and his defense usually consists of taking a charge. He’s a great energy guy and he seems to be improving from year to year…but almost 10 figures a year for this guy is insane.
I agree, is totally insane. But dude is not a bad player. With a couple of extra minutes he could average 10 & 10 while playing great D (and some anoyying flops). Just check the rosters around the league, and youll se Varejao is starter material. We had bonner as our starting center for the whole season for chrissakes
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
we had bonner as our starter
and we were bounced in the first round of the playoffs.
But I get what you’re saying…that’s why I said it depends what your definition of a starter is. Mason is technically a starter, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best 2-man on the team.
So, a guy we picked up off of the free agent waiver wire who was recently injured should have been starting over a guy who had been one of the league leaders in 3-point % for most of the season? Really?
Bonner started because he provided spacing for Tim and Tony to begin games. It’s that simple. Notice how little Drew played when Tim played. They clogged the lane when together and the help defender was always closer when the two of them are on the floor at the same time.

He’s dirty, he’s annoying, he hustles, everyone hates his guts – and he doesn’t mind. Having a guy like him is important for a team. We should know.

He’s an akward player. I go back to him shooting a 3 last year and getting called for a foul because his legs stuck out far enough to catch the defender in the chest.

I dont get it why nba gms like to spend so much money on bigs. A guy like Manu or Hedo has to bust his ass off to get a 10+ million contract, while the dampiers, Bynums, dalemberts and varejaos of the world get money for seemingly nothing. It baffles me, specially in a supposed tough economy and wit h the salary cap on the downside.

If ATS isn’t looking perhaps you could give me a taste of your book favorites. Lauri rec’d me Prep by Settinfeld(sp?) and I really like which means I should finish it soon and since no one wants to play me in chess I will have some more free time on the horizon.
Just call me The Profit
Funny, I almost mentioned the upcoming chess match in the other thread where I busted on your “propper”. (rik’s got your back over there, btw.)
So, book rec’s, eh? Well, if you haven’t read everything that Douglas Adams has ever written, then you’d need to get started on that right away. Five books in the Hitchhikers Trilogy (yes, it’s not aptly named) and the two Dirk Gently novels.
But, since that’s a lot of material, if you’ve looking for a quicker read, then you must read “The Old Man and the Sea.” I simply cannot stress how much this book rocks. It’s a quick read, beautiful, eloquent and the first time I read it, the ending simply shattered me.
Also, you need to be sure you’ve read Watership Down. Yes, it’s the book where rabbits are the main characters. But this ain’t no bunny book. I’ve never, NEVER recommended this book to anyone who’s ever come back to me with anything besides, “You’re right. I really enjoyed that.” Also, after multiple readings, I realized that it’s a study in leadership. Who knew?
That oughtta get you started. If you’ve already read all of those as well as Lord of the Rings, then just email me and I’ll get you some more.

Lol Jolly. “The Old Man” was one of my main textbooks in tenth grade. You just brought back a flood of memories.
Back then, I just really identified with the little boy and always just wondered, why hunt/destroy such a beautiful creature and shook my head at all things man does on this planet.
Read it again. The man is trying to survive – and he respects that fish.
Ok, I’ll stop.
My name is DeJuan Blair. You blocked my shot. Prepare to die. - CH&LD
I want my Manu o;—-)
Yes. But its the irony in so many cases. I respect nature and I am going to destroy it.
Its not an exact parallel. But my point is, the man goes for more than what he needs just because its the biggest fish and he is thrilled about the hunt and obdurate as the hunter. Wouldn’t that be a hunter’s ego more than the need.
I’m just going to ask you to read it again. If it still strikes you the same way, we’ll absolutely have this conversation.
So many of the books I read in high school, I re-read and realized that there was so much that I missed. I’m not saying that you were stupid in high school, LZ, I’m just saying that it might not say the same thing to you now that it did then.
If we were talking about hunting for sport, I’d have no argument with you whatsoever. But the situation in Old Man… is far, far different than that. I don’t want to say more, b/c I know ManuWar hasn’t read it, and I don’t want to ruin anything.
What do you think?
My name is DeJuan Blair. You blocked my shot. Prepare to die. - CH&LD

I think you are right. I am probably missing whole facets of the story now. Its only been a decade ago :P
So thats two books I have to read now. Will do. Just finished journal paper today. That means, if I lay low, I might have some time.
So the PtR book club begins. Now I’m going to have to read The Old Man and the Sea again. It’s been years since I’ve read it. Good thing I just finished The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

What do you think they were looking for?
They made a pitch to Wallace and he decided to go to Boston. Dice was their Plan 1b and they got him. It’s not like there was some superstar frontcourt player willing to take $5M a year to play with the Spurs.
Spurs traded for Richard Jefferson…that was the BIG move of the off-season. When they traded him, I’m sure all they wanted to do was to re-assemble their frontcourt depth and upgrade where possible, which they accomplished by adding Dice…a better overall player than KT.
Plus, the young guys will get to learn from Timmeh and McDyess for a couple of years. We now have depth, and Blair/Haislip won’t be required to produce at a high level right off the bat.
My people call it "sarcasm." - Lauri
This is good. McDyess will help guard the big men and can hit a nice mid-range jumper. He’s like a better(said hopefully) version of Kurt Thomas. I’ll be happy if that’s what he is. I think this signing is going to bode well for the Spurs. Antonio is a good guy who will work hard, plus it doesn’t hurt that we’ve got an energy guy behind him in Blair.
Marion to Dallas…that team is so weird. They don’t know what they want to be. So Houston still has a MLE to play with is that what I’m reading?
the Marion deal
it looks really good for the Mavs on paper. I wonder how his game will mesh with the others, but unfortunately for Spurs fans, the Mavs only get better with this move.
ditto for...
the Yao injury exception, which frees up more room if Houston wants to add another piece. Again, sucks for Spurs fans if the Rockets use it right.
I like what Dallas did. Super douchbag on a monkey sure likes to spend money, and their future is completely nonexistent, but he assembled an interesting team to fight at the top in Dirk’s last years.
Kidd/howard/Marion/Dirk/Gortat with terry off the bench? Not bad
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
Super douchebag on a monkey? That sounds pretty insulting, but I’m confused nevertheless. Is being on a monkey worse than not being on a monkey? And why is said douchebag on this monkey?

And not in prison…like I mean, a five year deal. That’s pretty rediculous for a long-time journey man who is really a one-tool wonder. I’m thinking the Nuggets are going to regret that deal in year 3.

the proposed Booze deal
I guess I understand the motivation for each team….Detriot’s frontcourt is depleted and Utah doesn’t want to lose Boozer in free agency next summer without compensation…BUT, there are definite downsides to this deal for both teams.
On Detriot’s side, the downside is the versatility of Rip. Yes, they have a new look backcourt with Stuckey and Gordon, but Rip Hamilton had become a VERY dependable scorer for them and he could play either the 2 or the 3 for them.
If it were me, I’d look for a taker for Prince…a guy who will never dominate or be a go-to guy.
On Utah’s side, they risk losing both Boozer AND Millsap…and even if they match an offer for Millsap, they’re likely to overpay. It also probably affects the playing time for their most underrated player, Ronnie Brewer.
Besides, I don’t think either team puts itself in the “elite” category with the deal.
why would utah make this deal if they can’t resign millsap.. makes no sense.
by FreshmakerDTM on Jul 9, 2009 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions
not saying they wouldn't, but...
the rumor is that the Blazers are working up a “toxic” offer, likely front-loaded or with major trade kickers that make Millsap impossible to deal in out years. Even if the Jazz match the offer, it’s not going to be one that they enjoy signing.
Getting Stackhouse a ring would be another slap to Cuban’s face.

you’re going to bat over a player that is likely fringe-average at this point in his career. IF the Spurs trade Finley and he doesn’t come back, then I’d say Stack becomes an option. But at this point, it’s just filling out the roster.
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind at all if Jefferson averaged 38 minutes a game and they played Manu at SF the other 10. That way the Spurs wouldn’t have to worry about Fin or Stack or WIlliams or Hairston or whoever.
I dont like the thought of Manu playing against SF’s (on defense). We should do great with Finley and Hairston/Williams. Thats nice depth in my opinion.
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
depth?
that’s a one-dimensional role player past his prime and two unproven young players without legit shooting range. that’s the only position I’m really worried about.
We have too many shooters already. Besides, Finley wouldn’t be bad on a limited role. He has cold blood.
Straight from the No-Stat Zone to your computer!

seriously, Jefferson will play like 36-38 minutes a night. We are asking those 3 guys (the elderman and the 2 unproven guys) to not suck ass for 10 minutes. That’s not very hard to acomplish (unless you are the JV of course)….. (god I’ll miss the JV)
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
Please stop the Stackhouse discussion. He’s a washed up thug. His legs were gone two years ago.
Fin may be washed up too, but he’s our washed up guy. Besides, I love having a 15 minute guy off the bench who shoots a high percentage of 3s and free throws.

Boozer-Hamilton deal
I think it makes Utah a lot better if they get Millsap back, so that they would be just committed to him.
As for Detroit, they’ll move up a few spots in the playoffs, but still won’t get out of the first round.

I’ve been thinking about this, actually. The new bar is easy to add and remove, so it doesn’t take much to break a full post in two parts. It could be interesting to do as we used to: have the latest post shown completely on the front page, and then change it to a more manageable size once another story’s posted. I believe we only started breaking the posts because of the game threads.
Then again, maybe having to click on the link to read the full version encourages first-time posters to leave their comments. What do you think?

Still don't see Spurs getting out of the west
I think it was a good move to add McD, but I still don’t see them getting out of the West (a strong 2nd for sure but that’s about it). I guess only time will tell.
Like Rudy said
“Dont ever underestimate the heart of a champion”
GO SPURS GO
SPURS 2010 NBA Champions (if team is healty LoL)
"healthy" is the key...
in any sport with a salary cap, it always comes down to who’s healthy at the end of the year.
We had a pretty good run, but the last two years, injuries have cost us (and I suppose the year of TD’s plantar fascitis too…). LA can make their case for Bynum’s injuries, but frankly, at some point that becomes the norm – and other than that, they’ve been remarkably lucky – this year not only in their own health, but in others’ injuries.
Whether that luck continues or not, and whether ours changes or not are probably the biggest factors in who moves out of the West.
What these changes have done for us is get us in the mix where if we stay healthy we can definitely compete and possibly win. They have just as many “ifs” as we do – they may be better IF they retain Odom, IF all their key players stay healthy, IF Artest doesn’t kill anyone, IF team chemistry is as unimportant next year as it was this year…
We still need another backup center
We cant rely on Ian to be the only back up center, hes too young and gets hurt too often.
The spurs should bring Oberto or Elson back for the minimum, this guys at least can play good defense.
I don’t think the Spurs are done making moves yet. Bonner, Finley, and Haislip could all be potential trade pieces. Mason too, but I’d like to see him back in the silver and black.

Retire Bowen's #12!
I’ve been saying this so much over the last few days that I just quit out of sheer monotony.
Thanks, rik, for keeping it up. I don’t know if they’ll be able to find a trade partner before the season begins or not, but I fully expect the team to get this kind of a big man to help us in the stretch run and playoffs. After the moves we’ve seen them make so far, I look forward to whatever the move(s) is(are).

I want my Manu o;—-)
I think we’re going to see a traditional BIG man (over 7 ft.) in a Spurs uniform this season. Who it will be is beyond me, but RC kinda gave a little nod and a wink about not being sure whether he’s done yet.

Retire Bowen's #12!
Being a GM in the league and watching Buford operate must be a bit like being a regular poster around here when Stampler drops one of his amazing pieces of writing.
Admiration mixed with envy accompanied by the understanding that you’re not on the same level as what you’re witnessing.

Sheesh, looks like you’ve been suppressing some pretty strong feelings. Let it out brotha, let it out. . .

Surprising good news: Tim Varner is reporting that Haislip signed for the vet minimum, NOT the BAE.

Retire Bowen's #12!
Yeah, apparently all of us who were calling it the LLE were idiots. Varner knows his stuff, though.

You mean we don’t have our lower-level exception? I think we do, rik.

Hm, it seems you’re right, and BAE and LEE are the same thing. Had no idea.

Wow, a lot of stuff to read here.
There was something about getting Stackhouse?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Remember the take-down of Manu?? Noooooo!!!!!!
Any talk about getting Bowen, Thomas or Oberto back?? (if they are waived)
As guys that know the system, 1 or 2 might still have been handy and have experience (though declining ability and limited roster spots now)
The three of them could be useful for short stints against some matchups.

Out of those three, Bowen would be the most useful. We really don’t need to add a 6’10" or under post player whose feet are glued to the floor. If we are getting a post, it should be a 7 footer who can block shots, or maybe a decent offensive player and rebounder (like Gooden) if he can be signed for cheap.
With Blair though we already have 6 post players.
