This can only be good. Nothing official yet, obviously.

Update: The Express-News is now reporting the same thing. The deal is rumored to be 3 years at the full MLE(with the 3rd year being a retirement kicker).

Update #2: PistonPost is reporting that it's a done deal. No independent verification yet.

I’m not sure how much we can trust good ol’ Yahoo, but this would be nice. What I’m wondering is why did the Spurs not try to get McDyess last year when he was traded and then cut? He would have been better than Gooden, surely.

by Big50 on Jul 7, 2009 4:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think McDyess just wanted to be back with his old team at that point. He thought they might have 1 last run in them. It is obviously over for the Pistons now and he probably wants to sign with a true contender.

I don’t think anybody thought that team had a run, they were struggling to make the playoffs. My point is that the Spurs didn’t go after him…at least from anything that I’ve read. That would have helped us then and maybe given us a leg up on signing him now.

by Big50 on Jul 7, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, McDyess was one person who thought they had a run left in them (at least according to what I read about it). Remember that this was in February.

err actually it was way back in December…McDyess was waived by the Nuggets on November 12th and then had to wait 30 days to sign with the Pistons.

Supposedly the Spurs (among other teams) did try and convince McDyess to join them.

we should go after marion, he can gives us what odom gave to the lakers, a guy that can play and guard multiple positions. Then we should sign elson for the minimum.

by spursfan87 on Jul 7, 2009 5:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Marion fits on the Spurs. He is going to want to take a lot of shots and he is going to take them early in the shotclock. We’d be better off spending the money on a post player.

I agree, especially after already adding Jefferson.

Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?

by BlaseE on Jul 7, 2009 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think marion would give us a more versatile team, he can space the floor and is a good defender.
And also dont get me wrong, abourt dice, i love dice in the spurs, hes a spurs type of guy, but i dont think he is worth the full MLE though. I like his offense and his defense is decent, but he is not a shot blocker (thats why i liked rasheed more), and we need another shot blocker. Either way i think why should sign elson for the minimum.

I also like marvin williams but i think the hawks are going to match any offer

That’s just it… Shawn Marion isn’t a team player. Never has been, never will be.

I like McDyess, he’s a smart, team player. I’m not crazy about the 3 years, but I’ll take it in a heart beat.

Bellasa…..one or two years ago i would have agreed with that sentiment….but Marion has made a Guhzillion dollars . The guy has to have some sort of hunger to win a title ( maybe not) but who knows….

by alamobro on Jul 7, 2009 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe he does maybe he doesn’t. But you’ve got to know that McDyess absolutely does. I think he’s had a taste of a championship and I think he wants that chance again.

In the end I think Marion will go to the team that offers him the most dough. He’s talented, but he helped the Phoenix Suns implode. I’d rather not have that potential cancer on our team.

Have you guys watched the same Marion all of these years? He would not mesh well with the Spurs. Though he is a good defender, he will want lots of offensive touches. He is not a grind it out half-court player, but an open-court flyer.

I don’t even know where he gets his minutes? Is he going to split time at the 3 with RJ? That’s not enough for both of them. He is not a guard and RJ really plays better at the the 3 than the 2. Having both of them means RJ will spend some time at the 2 and/or he will spend time at the 4. Either way, I don’t really like it. It’s either small-ball, or poor-ball-handler-ball.

Who is talking about 3 years now? I thought we were offering 2? 3 years is too much. If he is over the hill by next season we can trade his expiring contract.

Just noticed the update above. I guess they feel they have to offer 3 years to beat out the other contenders. Too bad since 2 years would be about right for someone as old as him, but at least it isn’t a huge contract.

i think it isnt as bad as many think… he’ll help this year, maybe do situation duty the next, and then do a JV (veteran-locker-room-presence-mentor-to-young-guys). he also reminds me of kevin willis. dunno why. we kept willis for 2 yrs and it seemed like a lifetime. we’ll see how this one ends.

by theonlyromeo on Jul 7, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the third year is partially guaranteed, which would make him very attractive trade bait/expiring contract in that third year. It would allow us to trade with a team looking to save money; the other team could send us a player with his equivalent salary, then cut him to save more cash.

He is strictly an uptempo player on a team with a strong passing point guard (Nash, Calderon). Why did he struggle in Miami? Dwyane Wade is their defacto point guard. Tony looks a lot more like Wade than he does Nash. He would get lost in our Tony-Tim-Manu centric offense. And then he would get pissy and Pop would have him sent to the Ukraine in a small box.

Great news

I prefer him to Sheed although Sheed is probably more worth the MLE. I just want players to want to be Spurs and say, “yeah, leBron, your team is competing for chips and offered the same amount of money but I like Duncan and the Spurs better.” Plus, who wants a team where TD is the oldest player?

Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?

I’m not about to start celebrating, but this is certainly encouraging. McDyess was probably the second best guy out there in free agency, and may have been the best—I mean, Wallace looked absolutely TERRIBLE towards the end of the season. It was certainly no contest as to whether Dice or Sheed was a better player on last year’s Pistons. Was Sheed so unmotivated that he totally sucked, or is he over the hill? I guess Boston will find out.

Does anyone know how McDyess matched up with Gasol and the Lakers?

i think someone older makes a bit of sense… if we sign a young guy off free agency, it might stunt the development of the new spurs (plus maybe tiago next year). an older guy makes sense if we dont really plan to have him long term. he can help this year (considering the “closing” of Duncan’s championship window), and can leave (or be traded or—most probably—pull a JV) when Tiago and Ian and Blair start being productive. i wouldve wanted sheed (not eactly a young un), but dice is a good consolation prize.

IF McDyess ends up signing with another team………f*ck 4 or 5, lets sign a 3!!!

Think about this:

Starters: Tony, Mase, RJ, Blair/Bonner/Ian, Tim
2nd Unit: IUPUI, Manu, Findog, McDyess, one of the non-starting bigs above

Can we start the season now please? That is a serious second unit from a firepower perspective. The one thing that was so frustrating in the playoffs watching the game clock and praying that the bench could score enough to let Timmy / Tony get some rest. And seeing it not happen very often.

According to a commenter (not Vangelis) on 48MoH, Express News reports McDyess has made up his mind on San Antonio unless the Pistons can match the offer or get close. Right now, the Pistons can only offer $2 million next year so they would need to trade to clear about $3-4 to make a competitive offer. I think McDyess is going to give Detroit time. The wait could be awhile.

That sucks that he is just planning on keeping the Spurs hanging…especially for such a lame reason: to wait and see if the terrible Pistons can shoot the moon and somehow come up with the space to sign him. Very weird considering he should have no attachment to the new coach and most of his old teammates are gone. What does he love about Detroit, the cheap housing?
