Rasheed signs with Celtics. Big Baby to Spurs?
Thanks to LJ Ellis (timvp) of SpursTalk for the link. So, Plan A is gone - what's plan B?
Apparently, Plan B is not the greatest plan in the world. Big Baby might be head to SA. Normally, I'd advise against believing anything on Twitter, but timvp said this is from the same guy who broke the Wallace news earlier today.

Not sure I buy this. Wallace previously said he was going to take his time and visit SA and Orlando. Why reverse course?
Maybe it’s another player pulling a Turkoglu on BSPN.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I think big baby has a more reliable mid-range jumper (that he’s been working on) than Blair. And while I’m as excited as most people about Blair, I haven’t seen him play a minute, and big baby has experience. He filled in admirably for KG when he went down. I think that Blair, will eventually have the better nba career though, but he’s not at the same level as big baby yet.

Dateline: Boston
Today at Rasheed Wallace’s first press conference after agreeing in principle to sign with the Celtics for Boston’s mid-level exception, the 6’11’ power forward was kicked in the balls by Wayne Ats, the general manager of the San Antonio Spurs.
When asked how he felt about what would almost certainly be a fine from the league, possible legal repercussions, as well as questions about whether he would be fired for his action. Mr. Ats replied, “I don’t care about the questions, I just don’t want it to count against the cap.”

So lets see. Can BB guard Gasol. I didn’t watch last years finals. No clue here.
But this years playoff, BB showed a very reliable midrange jumper(at least in the postseason he made it consistently and annoyingly) along with the usual slaughter of ppl moving around him. The guy wasn’t fazed at all by big games, in fact he stepped up.
I would actually take BB over Varajao. That kid is brainless and gets pushed around easily by anyone who posts him up(a’ la Howard).

Don't Hold Your Breath
Not to rain on ya’lls holiday weekend, but realistically the odds of Splitter coming over THIS SEASON to the NBA are prolly less than 1%, if that. Slim to none, really. Like a 1 in a million chance. Simply because his contract with Tau Ceramica doesn’t contain a buyout possibility until NEXT summer, 2010. Even then, there is a maximum amount that San Antonio can offer him because of the rookie scale/slotting. He easily could make triple what the Spurs can offer by staying overseas.
As for the McDyess query, yes, he is still available, meaning he hasn’t verbally committed to anyone. Not much has been heard from his camp, prolly cuz ’Sheed, Hedo, Artest, and Ariza have been hogging the headlines. But once the dust settles this Wednesday, I would be VERY satisfied if McDyess decided to sign with San Antonio. That would be otstanding!!!

Someone explained it here last week, there is a situation in which a draftee is no longer bound by the rookie wage scale if a certain number of years have passed since his draft date, and word on the streets is his team in Spain is in dire financial straits, so why not sell there best asset?

I’m pretty sure he’s still available, and whether we like it or not, I think he, and probably Brandon Bass would be our top two choices that we now try to focus on. Dice would be choice 1, and Bass would probably be 2a, or 2b I think along with someone else. Anyways. I still feel feel that Dice is a pretty serviceable big man that will fit well into our system. And while I feel somewhat disappointed that we didn’t get Sheed (despite my initial hesitation to sign him), I’ll be pretty happy still if we get Dice.

According to Zach Lowe of Celtics Hub, Tanguay is not a reliable source. But I talked to Jeff Clark of Celtics Blog and he did note that Tanguay was the first to break the Wallace story.
Also, when I looked back at the original story Tanguay broke, it says “Davis could be gone to San Antonio.” Not as confident as his tweet sounded.

It is odd that he wouldn’t have visited Orlando and San Antonio. It’s like if you are interested in a Camry, an Accord, and a Malibu, and you go test drive the Camry and decide, “that’s it, I’m done, I don’t need to check out the Accord or the Malibu.” What if you like them better? It’s not like Boston would have withdrawn their offer. That’s a poor decision making process.

Probably not...
but we do need someone to guard Pau Gasol and/or Andrew Bynum, just like LA picked up Artest to guard big 3’s like Lebron, Paul Pierce, and Carmelo Anthony. I felt like Wallace was the best guy out there for that job.

I Apologize
I started that vicious rumor last night on the Haislip post. I was just disappointed the Spurs lost out to Boston in the ’Sheed sweepstakes and started thinkin wildly unrealistic thoughts.
I was hoping that now with Wallace in their frontcourt mix, and after remembering hearing about Perkins’ occasional “run-ins” with Doc Rivers, maybe in an alternate universe the Celtics would consider moving Kendrick. Like I said, it’s obviously a long shot, but certainly not unfathomable.
A fan can dream, can’t he? I’m certainly not the only one guilty of rosterbating around here. If Perkins is so far out of the question, what realistically obtainable names would you throw out there to fill the Spurs’ center void?

I disagree. He seems like kind of a jackass, but he’s a very good defender, and can score around the basket. Actually, per my comment above, he fits the bill as someone who could handle Bynum or Gasol defensively.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. --Andy Dufresne
not only does he fit thats bill—-hes actually already proven he can do it on the biggest stage, and his defense is highly underrated in comparsion to KGS – Perkins is the real muscle underneath for the celtics, granted KG is a great perimter defender and rebounder, but perkins can really dominate the post defensivly – 1 on 1 he forces dwight howard into these ridicoulous 7 foot running hooks and just beat up gasol and odom 2 seasons ago

I know it’s blasphemous to question the logic and reasoning of Pop and RC Buford, but couldn’t our MLE be better used than just throwing it all at Davis, an under-sized power forward with conditioning problems who doesn’t rebound or play inspired defense?
Why aren’t the Spurs targeting a guy like Zaza Pachulia with most of the MLE and then use the rest to take a flier on a young wing player, a la Quinton Ross? Pachulia made $4 million last year and Ross was on the league minimum, so I don’t think it’s that much of a reach.
But the news concerning McDyess is encouraging. He seems like the best fit among free agents currently available, and I would definitely be open to giving him the entire MLE over the next 2 seasons.

I can’t believe Dice wants to stay in Detroit. His frontcourt running mate is gone, and there’s no way the Pistons contend – plus, the Pistons seem like they’re putting together a team predicated on speed, which is not exactly Dice’s forte.

Whew!
McDyess is definitely the way to go right now. It would have been crazy to offer the full MLE to big baby at this point. That would have to be a last chance option since it does nothing to aid the Spurs in their quest for a starting-caliber post player.
