Really? 5 in 10?




Okay, I don't want to be a party pooper or anything, but this has really gone on far enough. I have waited patiently for other people to notice their mistakes (mostly the brainy engineers, shame on you LatinD!) but no one has addressed it. What's worse, some have blown it out of proportion (JRW I thought the validity of your sig would be better than that). Therefore, I think I will have to be the only one call you guys out. We won't be able to get 5 in 10. Not because we won't be a great team this year, or we won't win the championship. Personally, I refrain from blatantly saying that we'll be champions this year because I don't like saying something that hasn't yet occurred. I also feel with the roster currently constructed, we only have about a 50 percent chance or less of winning everything (teams have to be healthy, meshing at the correct time, lucky, and i'll throw healthy once more since it's the spurs). Finally, I don't want to jynx it (I'm really not this anal in real life, I promise). Anyways, my problem isn't that it bothers me that people say we'll win a championship this year, it's that they say 5 in 10.

Have we forgotten how to count? The first time we won was in 99. IF, if we win this season, we'll be crowned 2010 champions. Now correct me if I'm wrong (you can't) but that will put us with 5 within an 11 year frame. We would have to have beaten the Lakers and then Orlando this past season to have won 5 chips within a 10 year frame. Now, why am I talking about within a ten year frame instead of just saying 5 in 10? I'm glad you asked. Well, 5 in 10 means 5 championships or 10 years or 10 seasons. Now, here's how are our past seasons were beginning with the 98-99 season when we first won the title.

98-99  - Season 1 - 1 chip in 1 year      - 1 in 1
99-00  - Season 2 - 1 chip in 2 years    - 1 in 2
00-01  - Season 3 - 1 chip in 3 years    - 1 in 3
01-02  - Season 4 - 1 chip in 4 years    - 1 in 4
02-03  - Season 5 - 2 chips in 5 years  - 2 in 5
03-04  - Season 6 - 2 chips in 6 years  - 2 in 6
04-05  - Season 7 - 3 chips in 7 years  - 3 in 7
05-06  - Season 8 - 3 chips in 8 years  - 3 in 8
06-07  - Season 9 - 4 chips in 9 years  - 4 in 9
07-08 - Season 10- 4 chips in 10 years- 4 in 10  (if we won in 08, then that'd be 5 in 10)
08-09 - Season 11- 4 chips in 11 years- 4 in 11  (if we won in 09, then that'd be 5 in 11)
*09-10 - Season 12- 5 chips in 12 years-5 in 12 (if we win this year, then it's 5 in 12)

See what I mean? Now once again, I'm really not this anal. Just pointing it out. If you want to say 5 in 11 instead of what it really should be 5 in 12 (as proved above) that's okay. It's like saying there being 11 numbers between 0 and 10 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) even though there is a 10 digit frame between within them. But please, I urge you to reconsider saying 5 in 10.
 
 Now I know what you're thinking, "but that doesn't sound as cool! I like the sound of 5 in 10 better! Sure it sounds better, but you'll be proved wrong when you gloat to your friends that are from other teams. They'll say, well, the Spurs won the chip in 10' and first won it in 99' really? 5 in 10? Are you stupid? They'll eventually make you take it back and bragging in front of them won't be as cool after you're corrected. So instead say 5 in 11, and even though you'll technically still be wrong, they won't notice. 

I don't mean to call anyone out with this (JRW Xman and LatinD =). My first intentions were to write this as a comment for your recent post xman, but I figured this was too much of a downer and mood killer for the pretty optimistic, and good post you had (I also didn't want to destroy LatinD's eyes with a long comment). Once again, I'm usually pretty laid back, I don't know why this bothered me enough to write so much about it. It must be numbers.

Note: Now I may also be wrong and you guys have already discussed that it's not really 5 in 10 somewhere, but I totally missed that if that's the case.

sorry LatinD, I just feel you’re one of the people that i’m most familiar with in terms of personality (hence easier to make fun of them when you know more about them). Actually, tlo is still partly right, b/c if you use the year 2010, then you need to use #5 with it, otherwise “5 in ’10” doesn’t make sense. It’s probably best to come up with a better slogan for next year. :-)

No argument here

We all contribute to the lexicon as we can. Some by misspelling, some by noticing. I’m definitely in the 2nd category.

But by convention, you’ll notice that (OTSTANDING aside) it’s not a suggestion if you immediately notice and correct it yourself. As you see I’ve done.

I will admit that I had a pretty killer typo that I almost left in because it would almost certainly have been noticed and added, but the purist in me wouldn’t let me leave it since I noticed it.

Ahh, we are so often our own worst enemy, are we not.

Alternatively the 5 in 10 signature could easily be pushing for two Spurs titles in the next two years and of course, a la Phil Jackson, we have to discount the Spurs first title as an asterisk because of the lockout shortened season meaning we would arbitrarily start counting from 2002 or exactly 10 years ago (since we are talking about winning the 2010 and 2011 titles), brining the Spurs title count to 6* in 12 or (because of the asterisks) 5 in ten. I prefer this scenario to any previously mentioned. I could make a chart or graph…but no one likes graphs.

I’d be facing off against you guys more on the whole “what’ll happen in the 2010 playoffs” discussion, but I just can’t seem to with all of the great arguments on both sides. It’s largely academic until we get there and see the way each team has played during the season.

Glad you guys are over here and “keeping perspective” for us while we continue to geek out over our team’s new toys acquisitions

This is a serious post

PtR doesn’t allow any objectifying of women by posting pictures of their bodies for a percentage of the blog to leer at and comment on. We’re a Spurs blog. A sports blog. A family-friendly blog.

If however, you feel the need to follow Hipuks’ example and post gorgeous pictures of animals (his choice is fish, usually at halftime of game threads) then no one will stop you — as long as you can refrain from making lewd comments about the animals.

Oh, just create a folder called “PtR links” and bookmark them. Then give them a name besides what your browser wants to call it. Like this one would be “TLO’s 5 in 10 rant” — or something like that.

That way, instead of having to use the search tool (upper-righthand corner of the main page) you’ve got your ammo easily at hand when you need to slip a link into a comment to liven things up.

Actually, I’ve just started to follow my own advice. For the most part, I’ve been using the “search” function all along.

It can occasionally be time consuming, but the results are worth it.
