Parker Injures Ankle in International Play
The sprain is reportedly mild, with no tearing or ligament damage and an MRI done today revealed no major injury, and Parker is expected to return for the game vs. Italy.
Let's hope this is the worst injury news we hear about Tony for the next year.

I know. And you just know that he did it on purpose, just to get us all stirred up. Prima donna, why can’t he just live his life exactly the way we require? It’s not that difficult:
- Break up with Eva
- Stop playing internationally
- Become a pass first PG
- Stop saying stupid things to the media
- Publicly admit that Manu’s better and bow to his excellence
That’s not too demanding, is it?

Retire Bowen's #12!
At what point are NBA teams going to stop their players from international ball, especially in years where the World Championships or Olympics are not involved? I seem to remember that some MLB teams prevented their players from competing in the World Baseball Championships. I don’t know what the answer is, but the human body can only take so much wear and tear over the course of a year.

I don’t think the NBA is going to have much success in keeping international (or American) players from playing with their national teams. A. They would have to put something in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. B. The NBA would then have to put something in the each contract to keep players from going to these type of tourney’s. I don’t see either of those things happening.
Hopefully Parker will be fine.
I’m sick of this bum always being injured. We should trade him for the 5th draft pick.

still a rather dim-witted move for me.
someone somewhere suggested pay cuts for injured players—the amount, depending on the number of games missed. id have to agree, especially when the injury happens off the nba court.

You can’t blame Parker for wanting to jump right back into playing. He’s so stoked to be on the court with Spurnando that he can’t help himself.

Guys most of the comments are way off. There’s another whole different feeling while playing for your own country. You can ask for the players to skip international competition. Im pretty sure most of them would prefer 10X times to skip the NBA season instead. Most of the players never bond too much with their teams (because they get traded lots of times). And if the injuries are someones fault, that is the NBA season: its 82 fucking games. Its too damn long. How can you blame 10-15 international games a year? Im not even counting a deep playoff run (and the spurs are a team used to it).
Dont be assholes, representing your country is more important than representing your employer. I thought united statians had a high sense of patriotism (we argentineans only remember our country in sports instead).
Maybe you dont blame the NBA because if one star player gets injured you still can send like 20 others to replace it for an international competition. But trust me, in other countries there’s a different feeling. Im a lot more pissed off by a guy like manu missing Argentina games because he is injured/tired by the nba season than the oposite scenario.

"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
I think that most countries feel that way (excepting the US). We only care about the Olympics. Even the World Championships don’t really register. The Spurs seem much more amenable to their players participating in international ball than other teams, although I’m sure they were glad when Timmeh no longer played for the US. I think other leagues have always taken international play into account, but it’s only become an issue in the US as the NBA players have become more international. So for most US fans, the loyalty is with the NBA team, and then the national team a distant second, which is the opposite of many other countries. So the two different points of view are bound to clash.
My people call it "sarcasm." - Lauri
You can ask them to skip international competition. It is how they get paid. If they want to skip the NBA season, then let them. Let their countries pay them their salaries.
I do think you can really say “representing your country is more important than representing your employer”. Weren’t you the one with the rant about the lazy countrymen who expected to be given things. I mean, if Argentina or France or whoever, wants to step up and pay Manu $8M/year to represent the country that would be interesting. Until then, I think most people DO have to represent their employers. It’s called having a job.

True. However, the better you are at your job, the more concessions are made to keep you an employee of said company. That’s a decision each company ultimately makes in order to keep a top producing employee… a winner, if you will.

Uh-huh. It didn’t have anything to do with Tim having to play too many minutes early in the year. It didn’t have anything to do with over-compensating and maybe hurting the other one. In fact, it is generally recommended for stars of the team to HAVE surgery for the team’s benefit. That’s what I hear, at least.

If we’d had a better bench, Tim wouldn’t have had to play all those minutes. Also, Tony got hurt on Spurs time last season and so did Tim and so did Manu. Why? Because they were all carrying too much of the load all season long.

You just can’t understand what fans from other countries feel like when it comes to their national teams.
For you guys the World Cup and particularly the Olympics are just things that happen every four years and that prove how much the US dominates this sport. For us it’s our only chance to watch our favorite players, spread through the world, playing together and achieving things no one has before. Manu and his team literally pushed basketball forward in our country. Ten years from now I’m sure new Ginobilis will appear, and all because of that team.
Football players in Europe get paid just as much as NBA players, and their teams also do everything they can to keep them from competing internationally. However, the FIFA has too much power for that to happen during important tournaments like the World Cup or America’s Cup. It’s a balance of power that could come into play in the NBA soon, too. If Stern really wants the NBA to be international, then he has to show off its talent in the World Cup and the Olympics.
When Manu plays for the Spurs, he represents me. When Manu plays for Argentina, he represents every single Argentine. That’s how simple it is for us, and for the French. It’s a whole new level.
Oh, and Chilai, Manu and the other guys have always represented Argentina. We can’t ask them to play without rest when they’re in their thirties. Honestly, I prefer to see a team of kids lose badly and gain experience. We can’t always depend on the veterans – we need to form new players.

You’re right – we can’t. However, these players are getting paid millions by their employers for the NBA season, especially considering the length of the international leagues’ season compared to the NBA. I do like the idea of using kids during non-Olympic/World Championship years. It gives the young’uns experience and allows the old’uns to rest up.

I completely understand Holt’s POV. We simply have different interests. It won’t be the fans’ feeling that will decide this, anyway – it will be money, as always.

I actually think this system is for the best. With teams complaining about their players but then the players playing on their national teams anyway. If there are any sorts of rules in which players are punished for playing international games I think there would be a huge backlash. The player’s association probably wouldn’t go for it anyway.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
I think I can understand. I just don’t think it means that you can act irrationally. The NBA players have a job. They have a contractual obligation to perform the job. Any given citizen’s national pride is really not the deciding element to this, as you said below. My only real objection is that some people think that “what about national pride and representing your country” is supposed to be a convincing argument.
Representing your country is a matter that is personal to the player. If they are willing to sacrifice money and part of an NBA career to do it then they should. The way it is set up now, it is the employer and the fans who have prepaid to see him play who sacrifice for a player’s pride. I don’t think that is right.
