Who says the Dynasty is over? Not so fast
By now there are probably a million articles, blog posts out there about how great the summer has been for the Spurs, but one more can't hurt can it? I just can't believe the progress the team has made all in one summer. How can you NOT be excited if you're a Spurs fan right now?!?
First off i want to say that any ideas that anyone has that Manu is going to be traded need to be thrown away right now. This will never happen. Ever. I hear people saying that the Spurs signed Jefferson as a replacement for Manu because they feel like his injuries will keep him back.....(-_-)....really? Are we serious people? You can't teach what Manu brings to the table. And there is no way that RJ should be considered a replacement for him. This is Manu freaking Ginobili we're talking about here, the guy who was key in 3 out of the 4 Spurs championships. Why does anyone even think he will be traded? Don't you guys understand that there will be no championship without him? I mean really guys. Do you honestly believe that Manu Ginobili will be traded for Antawn Jamison?!?! O yea that's a trade I see the Spurs accepting (-_-) Come now people, lets get real for a second. I love Ginobili. He is by far my favorite player in the league. (sorry Tony) It just gets me when I hear rumors like this. I can't even imagine what the NBA would be like if he went somewhere other than SA. It wouldn't seem real to me.
But i digress........
Well now that I got that out of the way I can get to the Spurs hopes for next season. To be honest with you before everything sank in I kept saying, "We still need one more piece," but I realized that all along I've been thinking about the new additions individually rather than collectively. That was my problem. But now that i see the additions as a whole and i think about how everything will come together, I'm ecstatic!! If you really thin about it, although the Lakers no doubt have a great team (good enough to repeat) the Spurs also have a great team because they went out and adressed all their needs, rather than just go sign a random star player.
I have seen a lot of good things from the Spurs this summer. It started with the Jefferson trade, which left me completely in shock for about a week. Then came the draft, where DeJuan Blair was basically gift wrapped to us by the entire NBA. This left me in disbelief actually. "Did i see that right? Blair? On the Spurs? I could have sworn i heard his name called at somewhere around 12." It just kept getting better. FA period came along and the rumors started flying about possible pick-ups. I was excited when we landed McDyess, unsure of the Haislip deal (still am 0.o) but most of all i was relieved that they didn't sign Glen Davis. (no knock on his game, i just cant see how he would help our cause right now) One of the most exciting parts of the summer was seeing that George Hill developed into a solid back up point. He deserves those minutes behind tony (more than R.Mason deserves to start after that effort in the playoffs) I was glad to see that he bounced back from his 2-25 shooting last year in the summer league and I'm looking forward to seeing him produce when game time reaches.
So I think that, all things considered, the Spurs are without question one of the best (if not the best) team in the league next season. Watch out for Ginobili to be destroying everyone on the court- Give the man his extension already. At the end of it all the Spurs will reign supreme. Go Spurs Go!!!

Great story.
I have always felt that Manu still can be the all star he was before. Look at his numbers before he got re injured he was looking like the old manu we knew and loved. I think he is most likely going to tear up the league espically considering he is playing for his contract. As for Mason give him a break. With Manu injures and Pop playing him at the point(which he is not) he didnt know his role. A lot of pressure was put on him by the spurs too. Notice he shoot lights out from the 3 at the begging of the season. Then later on when he started playing the point his 3 point% went down. I still think Mason should be our starter. The Lakers have a good team but without Lamor It would be very hard for them to Repeat. ALl in all great post and also Welcom to PTR.

I agree. Manu’s absence was the main reason we didn’t go farther in the playoffs last year – we need him to win.
Just out of curiosity, I’ve been confused with the various text faces: What emotion does (-_-) convey? Also, what emotion is (O.o)?
you obviously don’t have many asian friends that you talk to online with.
(-_-) is the equivalent of the expression you feel when someone makes a stupid joke, a stupid comment, or anything that makes you kinda feel sad for them, and you put on a serious face and just shake your head a little. It can sometimes also be after you do something dumb, and you feel sorry for yourself.
(o.0) is the equivalent of the expression you feel when you’re perplexed, confused, unsure, or maybe even sometimes surprised by something.
If I’m wrong, please feel free to let me know and correct me. Not that you need my approval (LatinD). =]

Hey, I’m Asian but I don’t use those emoticons. But I am familiar with them though, and you sir, are correct on your interpretation.

okay, I should’ve included that it’s mostly asian females that use them. I thought it was implied since girls are always looking for new ways to express their feelings, but I shouldn’t have left that out regardless. Thanks for your approval of my interpretation though.

well I’m neither asian nor female. I just use them because they get the point across and those are expressions I often use in my everyday life.

I’m almost in Manu avatar overload with the two of you replying to each other over and over.

Add in Stampler’s Manu-surreptitious-middle-finger avatar — and you guys are definitely a challenge to follow for those of us who use the avatars to see who is commenting.
Almost makes me want to change my avatar to my favorite Manu image.

Spurs20……Id like to be painfully honest and admit that last years Spurs team was so very CRAPtacular…that a healthy Ginobili would not have mattered. ( It may have been enough to beat Dallas, but thats it)
Oh how i disagree, take a look back and you would notice that the only difference between our last championship team and last years team was that Manu played in ’07. I say it all the time, healthy Manu = title contention.

Look at the difference between the ‘07 Lakers, ’07 Celtics, and ’07 Magic and last year’s versions of those teams.

Actually, the only differenCES in the 07 titlte team, and last years sub par squad were…
1. The absence of Manu…
2. Everyone on the team being 2 years older.
3. Timmys Knees hampering him
4. Roger Mason instead of Brent Barry.
5. A poor collective team effort on Defense.
6. Bruce Bowens relegation to the bench, and his loss of some quickness.
7. Fabricio Obertos relegation to the bench following his heart condition and subsequent inconsistent play.
……and there are probably some things that I missed. But surely the only difference between last years squad and the 07 squad was FAR more than just the absence of Manu. Albeit no drastic difference ( aside from Tim Duncans ailing knees)
All of these little things came together to spell doom for last years squad. This team would have needed alot more than

Agree, I just couldn’t remember the mojo killing rules. Is it only during game threads?

The mojo killing rules
SiMA, feel free to add on anything that you feel I’ve missed.
I suppose some could argue that a definitive work is in order – an actual fanpost with Roman-numeraled sections, pictures, links, etc. If anyone cares to see this skeleton completely filled out, say the word. Until then, we’ll call this a quick draft, pending the response.
So, just like we have a Big Three in Manu, TD and Frenchie, there is a Big Three in things to avoid while posting at PtR.
Do not kill the mojo by:
Hating on the Spurs.
No, "Duncan sucks." or "We’re awful." or "I hate Fillin Theblank." Criticize the shot or the decision, not the guy. This is our team, let’s keep the negativity as constructive as possible. Try something like "Don’t shoot that shot, Duncan!" or "What awful defense!" or "I hate it when Fillin drives like that. He’s always turning it over."
Crowing prematurely
Don’t say we’ve got a particular game/series/season won, when the outcome is in any way still in doubt. No, I’m not talking about stifling your enthusiasm when the Spurs have a 20 point lead with 30 seconds to go. But there are early celebrations that should be avoided. Just be aware of the time. Before you post "We’ve got this one!" ask yourself whether you’d still be cheering if it was the Spurs down by 12 or with 8 minutes left in the 4th.
Giving up too soon
Never say that we’re going to lose when there’s still a chance. Everybody has a different level of hope they bring to a game, so I’m not saying that we all need to keep cheering until the clock reads all zeros. But a good rule of thumb is: if you can ever remember any team coming back from a similar deficit, then please keep the negativity to yourself. Hey, if the Spurs lose, there’ll be plenty of time to wallow in the defeat. Down 7 with 90 seconds left is not the time to say we’ve dropped the game.
Finally this list is subjective and isn’t meant to be a tyrannical dictum about what must be observed. But this is a community, and if we want to share this space and enjoy it together, then some guidelines are helpful to remember that sometimes, not hitting that POST button can be a huge favor for some of your fellow PtRers.

Funny, but I just chose those numbers somewhat randomly. I didn’t have any particular game situations, or violations in mind when I wrote this. I tried to keep off of any specific toes with this.

I was talking about the last game of the regular season. So technically Findog tied it, then Timmy won it in the OT. But I know the Spurs were down 7 very late in the 4th.

Yeah, I knew the game you were talking about. I was just joking about how everybody was saying that Fin’s 3 didn’t actually beat the clock, yet it somehow counted anyway.

Pretty sure that was a couple games earlier, against Sacto. The one I’m talking about was against the NOOCH. But yeah, I had resigned myself to thinking the Spurs were going to open the playoffs on the road, and said as much on that thread. Reverse-psychology mojo?

You are talking about the Sacramento game where his shot came after the shot clock expired. His Hornets dagger was legit.

I’m re-reading this for the dozenth time and I want to defuse any potential controversy before it has the potential to begin. Everybody posts their own way, with their own style and preferences. My examples are the kinds of things I would say during a game and aren’t meant as a template to follow, but only to illustrate my point. I don’t curse, but choose instead find a way to express what I’m feeling in other ways. I’m not offended if you do; so if my responses seem bland to you, fine. I’m not arguing that you comment like me, just that we cheer for, and not against our team

Thanks for the clarification. I just didn’t know if mojo killing was related only to game threads – that’s what I remembered from this year, but I wasn’t around during the adam8065 time period.
My people call it "sarcasm." - Lauri
I’ve noticed we’ve gotten a lot softer on the mojo rules. Lots of Spurs 2010 champions! going around, I’m not sure that’s kosher. Of course it’s SiMA’s job to keep that in check, but maybe he’s gone soft on us.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
Just because he’s been scarce this summer doesn’t mean that SiMA’s gone soft, Hipuks. Otherwise, after a disappearance like yours, you’d lack the rigidity to even lift yourself off the floor.
I will, however, agree with you about the amount of ‘10 chips being taken for granted. I’m not comfortable with anyone stating that we’ll win this year; game thread or not. Hey, if you want to make a prediction, or say that the chip is our goal, or something like that — knock yourself out. But saying that it’s gonna happen ain’t right in my book.

I’m in my 20’s so rigidity is not a problem, but I suspect in 10, 20 years, after an extended disappearance like I had, I would have to take some sort enhancer.

luckily for you, Theo just signed with the Spurs!

As great as the offseason was for the Spurs, it’s all gonna be trumped by the return of a healthy Manu Ginobili. In a contract year, and with something to prove, #20 will be a terror all season long. This will be the hungriest Spurs squad in a long while!

While some people in here including myself feared that Manu could conceivably be traded,I Dont think anyone in here thought that RIchard Jefferson was brought in to “replace” manu…
Richard Jefferson wasnt broght in here to replace Manu he came here to be our deffensive stopper. Hopefully we could get Raja or Shan but if not he will most likely be guarding the other team best player.
When he was in New Jersy he was a great deffender becuase he wasnt the main scoring option and could focus more on deffense.

I really doubt he came in to be our defensive stopper, but more of a replacement for Finley. Someone who can score by slashing to the basket or shooting the three. He also made the team younger, as it’s been discussed to death by now on this site. Lastly, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a capable defender, but I wouldn’t call him our defensive stopper. If he is, then we’re in some deep doo-doo. I think he’s can be a good team player and team defender, which is what the Spurs are all about anyhow. Correct rotations, funnel players towards the bigs down low and contest all shots.
It was a bit disappointing last season watching the Spurs play defense. They’d go through stretches where they absolutely didn’t play much defense. Guys standing around, not rotating, allowing wide open jumpers. Even Duncan was guilty of this. Many times his man ended up with the ball from 15 ft out and he was stuck in the paint and would make a half hearted effort to contest the shot. The same can be said for a number of three point shots for a number of opponents. While we did have some games where for a period of time the team would play Spurs defense, it was more the exception rather than the rule.
Could you Blame him TIm Shot blocking parnter was Matt Bonner.. That was a big reason why we sucked last year on D plus or rebouding problem. We will be much better deffensively next season. I think next year team has the chance to be the best deffensive team the spurs have ever had.

I agree, RJ will probably never be our defensive ace the way Bowen was. But much as I love me some Findog, Jefferson will almost certainly be an improvement over him on the defensive end. Now, in game-ending situations, I’d still much rather have #4 on the floor, but only provided he’s fresh due to RJ handling most of the minutes. Anybody have a handy comparison of Finley vs. Jefferson in clutch situations?
