Oh no! Oberto = Scola 1.5?
It seems that the Rockets are interested in acquiring a player that we didn't feel we needed, yet again.
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=13150
Not really as important as the Luis Scola dump, but semi-relevant when considering the Scola dump. I wonder if we can convince them to pick up Jacque Vaughn by not signing him again this year.
Anyways, Fabricio Oberto was at the very least insurance in case we couldn't get much from the free agents. So this is somewhat disappointing to the Spurs I feel.

Right now I think Oberto is a top level 4th or 5th big man on a team. We always joke about how bad he is, and how unproductive he seems to be at all times, but the league is full of seven footers with no discernible skill other than being tall. Oberto at least is great wit his picks, can play solid defense on some bigs, can score some nice layups around the rim (youd think every nba player should be able to do it, but sadly gms love enormous guys who cant do nothing well) and can tip some offensive rebounds to the backcourt.
besides… he is argentine, that’s always a plus

You left out his passing skills. You should be ashamed of yourself. Please crawl back into your third world hole.

If this does happen, I wouldn’t call it anything more than Oberto=Scola 0.6.

yeah, I was going to title it Oberto = Scola 0.5, but I wasn’t sure how to give it the impression that this happened after the Scola issue, so I title it that. But yes, I completely agree with you. Oberto at this point in time is nothing compared to Scola and what we lost.

Meh. I am a little concerned that he would have some good chemistry with Scola, but he is really just a 3rd-stringer at best. Are the Rockets even going to be a threat without Yao?

they will.

Sure, they might challenge for that 7th or 8th playoff spot.
They looked good for some games without Yao, but they will not be true force for 82 games without a dominant post-presence (Scola is good, but he is not carry-the-team good). They are in desperation mode right now.
The main concern in is the Lakers. After that, we should worry about the Blazers and the Nuggs.

Yes, let’s wait until the offseason shakes out a bit more before we start assessing who will and won’t be a threat. It’s not looking good for Houston, but remember that they still gave LA fits after Yao went down in that series.

Ariza is not going to put the Rockets over the top right now. He is perfect for them though. With Yao out, they are looking at several years down the road until they are a contender again. They want young players.
Regarding your other comment, I recognize that the Rockets played well for some games without Yao. I just don’t see that kind of an attack holding up as being dominant for 82 games. That was more of a playoff anomally in my opinion.

Still, the rockets are now offically my second team. Look at that roster, with yao out, its full of overachievers and underpaid players. Lots of Scrappy and hustle players. 0 stars. I would love a team like that to make it far on the playoffs.

I think there’s zero change of him playing in Houston next year. Not after he blew them off last year with the weird scheduling of his surgery w/o telling the FO.

I think Morey is probably working that angle, since the Yao/T-Mac experiment has failed (from a health perspective). Even if Yao comes back, why not retool while getting rid of a player who’s not going to be able to carry the load.

I’m sorry it was at your expense, but I felt that Lauri’s BRILLIAN reply needed to be memorialized. It should be the standard reply now when someone’s sarcasmometer is broken!

At the risk of getting mushy
At my expense? No worries whatsoever, CH. I don’t care what some rude-as-artest-fbomb-dropping first time poster thinks; especially when he didn’t even take the time to read much more of the page that he felt compelled to comment on.
No, I wasn’t put out at all. In fact, quite the opposite. Seeing everybody set him straight made me feel better than anything somebody I don’t know could make me feel.
Besides, when one of your favored methods of attempting humor is playing dumb, or being sarcastic/ironic/etc. then reactions like that just come with the territory.
Finally, you’re absolutely right about Lauri’s reply. Her first (the ’ Not an auspicious first post’ one) was funny, but the second was beyond classic, into the legendary.

Yep, they are a scrappy team, kind of like Golden State was a few years back (except they are scrappy on D).
