Los Angeles Clippers (2-1) vs Washington Wizards (1-2) at 7:30 – The Blake Griffin show. Maybe he will match up with Andre Blatche in this one.

If by “match up”, you mean “totally dominate an inferior and largely disinterested player”, then yes, they may match up.

Excited about today’s game, but I’m totally fired up about the Blair-Thabeet rematch tomorrow night. But knowing CIA Pop and Co., they’ll sit Blair for the last game…..

We’ll see how Dante Cunningham does during the season. He’s one player who I thought had plenty of skills but a bit undersized. I liked watching him play while at Nova.

NBA TV has been showing these games all day. Right now the Kings and Knicks are on.

But of course they won’t be showing the Spurs.

i remember watching some summer league games the 2 previous winters (well, its winter down here), and i’ve never understood why the nba doesn’t do a better job with it. bball heads are starved for on court action at this time of year, and even though the level of play is patchy at best, its still better than nothing, so why not do a slightly better job in promoting it, and producing the end product?

Does anyone else wish they’d do away with jump balls? They are so undignified and goofy, the refs can’t throw the ball up correctly, and guys always cheat and steal the tap. Then they alternate possessions anyways at the other quarters. Just flip a coin to start the game.

And yes, I’ve been drinking box wine at home by myself. Why do you ask?

You know what would be better? How about shooting for the ball, like in pickup ball. Imagine the drama as Manu shoots for a critical possession late in Game 7 of the WCF.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. --Andy Dufresne

by tomasito on Jul 18, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

would it be only one player shooting (like the player that was defending) or both players that had the ball, like a challenge?

"He's Manu Ginobili"

by the little o on Jul 18, 2009 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Just one shooting. In pickup ball, if there is a questionable call that cannot be resolved, the parties involved will challenge one another to shoot for it. Someone from one of the teams volunteers to shoot (from the 3 point line), and if they make it, they get the call, and if they miss, the other team gets it. Most good rec players shoot around 50% (probably a little under) from a college 3 point line (uncontested), so it’s like flipping a coin, but more dramatic.

So let’s say Dejuan Blair and Ron Artest get tied up for the ball. The Spurs have the option to shoot for it (maybe they are at home), or let someone from LA shoot for it. Do the Spurs want the ball, and the pressure, or do they defer, and let, say, Kobe shoot for it? High drama.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. --Andy Dufresne

by tomasito on Jul 19, 2009 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

That doesn’t work, tomasito. Some NBA players shoot way higher than 50% from the 3-point line. And every team would want to ball in those cases.

Name one player who has averaged “way higher than 50%” from three for his career. That’s right, there is not a single one. Steve Kerr and Jason Kapono are at something like 45% for their careers. Occasionally guys shoot just over 50 for a single season—like Kerr shot ~52% one year, and I believe that is the highest single-season average of all time.

Even still, it is much harder to make a shot when everyone is standing around watching you, and you just have to shoot it cold, especially in a pressure situation. Just like guys can make 50 FTs in a row in practice, but struggle in games. Even good FT shooters who haven’t shot one for the whole game are liable to miss under those conditions.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. --Andy Dufresne

by tomasito on Jul 19, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

But that was on game situations, tomasito. Completely free? A tree-point FT? I’d imagine that if someone can average 45% when you take into consideration contested triples and last second shots, etc. etc, then they’d definitely average better than 50% when unguarded, with time to set their feet, breathe, set their shoulders… I remember watching Manu practice his triples once and he must’ve made about 80% of his shots, even though he was moving. I’m sure the pressure would be a factor, but people like Kobe and Manu deal with it all the time.

Besides, my point still stands. No self-respecting team would let its opponent take the shot. If you’re going to lose the game, you want to lose it on your own.

At the risk of seeming self-aggrandizing by replying to my own post, I have to add something about Gist: he HAS to be in Austin this year. Just has to. He’s talented, but if this what he looks like after a year in Italy, then he has to be developed in the Spur system in Austin, or we will have no idea what we have in him as an asset.

True story

My brother in law is a ritzy oil executive, and likes the finer things (drives a Lotus, wears a Rolex, etc.). One Christmas, his dad (my father in law) filled an empty bottle of expensive wine with Franzia, and served it. Sort of a Princess and the Pea test. Long story short, no one could tell it was box wine.

I found a old article on Greg Popovich and love of wine here. In it, it mentions this:

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich’s biggest nightmare has nothing to do with basketball. He’s not worried about a weak defense or an undisciplined team; after all, the Texas team, led by “Pop,” as the players call him, has won three NBA Championships in the past six years. Instead, it’s Popovich’s 3,000-bottle wine collection that keeps him awake at night.

“A vintage in Bordeaux like 2000 or 1990 comes out, so you go get X number of cases and you think, ‘How am I going to drink all this before I croak?’ " says Popovich, 57. “Then you end up having nightmares that your kids are going [to inherit the wine], mix it with 7-Up and make sangria.”

which I thought was cool.
