Rikiddo said its never too early....

First read rikkido's speculation on this season's roster.  I think rikiddo has it down for this season, but Finley definitely won't be back and Mason and Bonner both come off the books next year.  So does Manu but we all know in our guts he is going to still be a Spur.  I also expect Yawn and Cubits to earn their team options to not be termintated.

So to really speculate:

2010-11 Guaranteed Contracts (5):
Duncan, Jefferson, Blair, Dice and Parker

Team Options (2):
Mahinmi and Hill

Likely to return (1):
Manu

I'm not sure what Haislip's contract is so I don't know where to place him.  Hairston and Williams aren't even playing on guaranteed money yet for this season.

That's 8 players.  Splitter gets us to 9.  That is 5 front court bigs, 3 guards and 1 SF.

Options:
* Hairston and Haislip are in positions to prove themselves and earn roles as worthwhile role players.  Haislip can get us to 6 bigs while Hairston has the opportunity to be RJ's backup and a major role player.  Hopefully these two guys see the golden ticket in front of them and go all out to grab it.
* Bonner: I think will be gone.  Splitter would have to reject our offer.  Haislip would have to fail miserably.  Bonner would have to take way lower pay in the stingy market of 2010-11.  So if all of that happens, maybe.
* Mason: If he has an okay year, maybe the Spurs don't want to pay him.  If he has a great year, maybe someone else wants to pay him more, especially with us already having to negotiate with Manu.
* Home Grown Commodities:  We still don't know where they will be this year, but Gist, McClinton, and Williams could still earn time with this years team.  Gist has the toughest road because he is basically competing with Ian who has size on him and Haislip who may even have a guaranteed contract for next season.  McClinton and Williams have opportunities if they commit to wherever they end up this season to join the real club for serious minutes next year.
* Foreign Commodities:  We now have the rights to Nando de Colo and Javtokas.  For Javtokas, see Gist above about too much competition in the front court.  Nando de Colo could possibly earn spot though.
* We also still have 2 draft picks in next years draft.

Because I'm an optimist, I'm going to assume Haislip, Hairston, and Mahinmi all work out and prove themselves on our roster this year.  I think Mason and Bonner will walk and Finley will retire.  That is $9.5 million of our '09-'10 salary.

PG: Tony, Hill, De Colo
SG: Manu, McClinton
SF: Jefferson, Hairston, Williams
PF: McDyess, Blair, Haislip
C: Duncan, Splitter, Mahinmi

...with 1 spot left for Toros call-ups which I think is an unofficial Spurs requirement at this point.

Williams, De Colo and McClinton could easily be replaced by a lucky draft pick (See Grizzly Blair), a veteran who gets burnt by the competitive market (possibly even Mason), or a good player we acquire in a sign and trade using Mason or Bonner if their stocks are high if, say, we win the chip. Mahinmi could also be trade bait if he does well but we  are going to get Splitter.

Parker, Hill, Manu, De Colo, and Williams can be distributors (Duncan is sort of a distributor as well).  Parker, Hill, Manu, De Colo, and McClinton can all play off guard so we really have a ton of flexibility in the back court.

So there is some crazy early speculation and hopefully it sparks some good conversation.

I dont know about someone taking Mason from us. I think the sprus could get him back. If he has an okay year he be coming back. IT not like he has to have a great year with us. Manu is our main SG scorer not Mason.

You really are an optimist. I love it.

I don’t think it’s possible for all of our rookies to pan out – especially if you include De Colo, who we know little about, and McClinton, who’s a long way from NBA quality at the moment. Same for Williams – aren’t we basing our opinion on his chances just on RC’s comments? Same for Haislip, who failed to make it in this league on his first try.

I’m not saying it’s not possible, it’d just take some serious luck.

Great post Blase!
I love the optimism as well but as far as Jack Mc goes I don’t think he will amount to shit. The good thing about that though is that wings are a dime a dozen. I’m only concerned with our front court in the future because Parker is just a scoring machine. Splitter and Ian together will be just fine.

About us winning the chip and hopefully trading someone with high value at that point I think Haislip could be a possibility. He is an unknown and if he has a good year we can get some goods for him much the way Ariza seemingly came out of nowhere.

I’m not too concerned with next summer though as we are going to win it this year and I think we’re going to attract free agents on the cheap.

We'd still have our 2010 pick next year

so that could be immediate help, I dont really have high expectations for McClinton or Haislip, especially the former; we seem to go through borderline NBA guards fairly quickly.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I think Haislip will surprise us all. Yes, I have not seen him play, but here are some reasons for my optimism on him:

1. He went 13th to the Bucks. To be a lottery pick in the draft, usually means you are a physical specimen and/or an athlete. Oftentimes this trumps skill set and seems to be the case here. (Also see Thabeet, Hasheem)
2. I’ve seen his game log and if you ever thought he had a really chance to prove himself in those very limited minutes, speak up. He was practically buried on the Bucks and the Pacers brought him as a band aid when O’Neal went down. Do you think the Spurs could replace Duncan with some guy who wasn’t on the roster and only played 10 minutes a game for a season or two? He was set up to fail.
3. According to draft express which I consider to be a great scouting source, he has improved tremendously in Europe, a lot of this improvement is on his shot. DraftExpress also lists Haislip as the #3 international free agent behind Bourousis who we supposedly went after and Jannero Pargo who isn’t a big man as you all know. So basically we got the second best big who also has 3 point range who is an international free agent.
4. In the recent study by 82games which is very rough but a great starting point for a discussion, the Bucks are the #1 drafting team over the sample period. That includes Haislip. Maybe they (the FO and coaches) just quit on him too early and their scouts were right as they appear to usually be (See Sessions, Ramon for coaches mismanaging a scouting coup).
5. The Spurs are an international scouting monster. Trust in Pop, RC, and Dennis Lindsey. Splitter is for real. Scola was for real [sigh]. De Colo was a steal in the draft. We all know about Parker and Manu as well. You could throw out other names too like Barbosa and Javtokas. If they have evaluated Haislip in international play and like him, I trust them.
6. Haislip is likely taking the veteran minimum since we still have our BAE. This is showing a financial sacrifice on his part. You don’t take a pay cut to go ride the bench and not contribute. He is hungry to prove himself and I think the Spurs will give him the chance.
7. He has had a rough road in his professional career in terms of his struggles. Duncan, Dice, Parker, Hill, and RJ haven’t known those types of struggles. I think it’s important to have a guy who really knows how hard it is to be cut from teams and have to go to Europe. It will only help the team mentality with all of the young faces. It also makes me respect him a little more. Pop mentioned in his interview that he likes to tel players about Avery Johnson’s struggles. Haislip has lived those.

Hopefully you’re reaching for the Haislip bandwagon at this point.

McClinton worries me more. Mostly because he is already 24. Yes, that is still young but how many years is he going to be on the D-League or in Europe in order to develop. I’m praying he is just trying to outdo Hill’s summer league from last year or that the coaching staff is challenging him with something that is throwing him off. I really feel like I’m being blindly lead by Pop and RC on this one though. I have a terrible read on defenders though, so its very difficult for me to evaluate his Summer League defense even watching the games.

Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?

I agree with you on Haislip, he is an upgrade from bonner.

As for jack, i dont like what the coaching staff is doing with him. First he is not a point guard, i know they put him at the point to watch how hill plays at the 2. I also dont like that they dont run any plays for him, he is a shooter he needs to come off some screens, and he needs somebody to set those screens.

I think that If the spurs don’t want him they should cut him and let him go to another team like New York, D’antoni is going to have a better use for him.

Let's ease back on JackAttack

Go back a year ago and see what people were commenting during Hill’s summer league games. It’s much the same as

If the spurs don’t want him they should cut him and let him go to another team like New York
We were confused and doubted that the FO knew what they were doing. Then when the SL games ended, we were stunned that he made the roster. A couple of guys mentioned the way Duncan struggled b/c of what the coaching staff was asking him to work on, but by and large, there was not a lot of confidence in his ability to contribute. Then TP got hurt, Hill stepped in, and the rest is bandwagon history.

It’s still just a few Summer League games. If RC and Pop want to patient, I can be too.

the difference between Hill and Jack is that hill was a first round pick so he had a guaranteed contract.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want him to go to new york or some other team, i agree with you I think that the FO has a plan for him, and they are keeping that 15th spot open for him. I just said that because if the spurs think that they cant use him right now is better for him to be cut instead of being send to D-league, so another team can pick him because he’s 24.

On point #1...

I didn’t write my point which was that that stuff doesn’t really go away (yet). He is still athletic and still 6’10".

A look back to the 2002 draft:

PF’s and F/C’s taken:
4. Drew Gooden to the Griz
5. Nikoloz Tskitishvili to the Nugs who now plays in the ACB league in Europe
7. Nene to the Knicks
8. Chris Wilcox to the Clips
9. Amare Stoudamire to the Suns
11. Melvin Ely to the Clips
12. Haislip to the Bucks
19. Ryan Humphrey to the Jazz
24. Nenad Krstic to the Nets
31. Robert Archibald to the Griz
34. Carlos Boozer to the Cavs
43. Lonny Baxter to the Bulls
44. Sam Clancy to the 76ers
47. Chris Owens to the Bucks
48. Peter Fehse to Sonics
49. Darius Songaila to the Celtics
55. Luis Scola to the Spurs
56. Randy Holcomb to the Spurs
57. Corsely Edwards to the Kings

Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?

It’s great that you’re putting your thoughts into FanPosts lately. Keep it up, and thanks for sharing. I pretty much agree with you on Haislip, but I still won’t feel confident until I watch him play with my own eyes.

Interesting list. Shows how genius the Spurs are getting Scola at 55. I think he’s the best player that you list…Stoudemire and Boozer are more talented, but would you really want either of them over Scola?

Maybe for the price, Scola is the best. If they cost the same, I’d prefer Boozer. I’ve always liked Nene as well.

What postion is he. He cant really get playing time at our PF postion. THat all Dejuan Blair as our bakck up PF. Maybe the SF but i would rather see someone like Malik who is showing he can shoot the ball. I dont see him being center. That going to Ian. The spurs have 5 bigs. Maybe he might be able to find time. Altough I cant predict what the sprus are going to do so let’s just sit back and watch.

he will play against nowitzki and odom, thats the main reason he was brought here. He also can give other team matchup problems. With haislip this team becomes more versatile and we are going to be able to play any style. But first things first we need to see him play first.
