Spurs Summer League Game 1 Quick Poll And Postgame Discussion
So, the first Spurs game of summer league is over, with our Spurs winning a close one. There's plenty to talk about, but first let's find out who stood out for everyone. It seems fairly obvious to me, but let's try to make this one unbiased.
Here's a box score for assistance, and feel free to discuss the game here as well.

Although Hill was otstanding, I voted for Blair. I expected Hill to play this well. I only hoped that Blair would show the skills that I was so effusive about on Draft Night. Who cares if he’s only 6-7 and has no ACLs? He’s the best rookie rebounder I’ve seen in ages.

I voted for Hill, but Blair was right up there, too. What a manbeast. He grabbed a rebound and the ball almost exploded.

eh, It was just a play on the way words end(male vs. female) in Spanish. It was dumb, and nobody got it.

Ah, I thought that might be the case. It doesn’t quite work because “Manu” isn’t classically a male noun – “mano” vs. “mana” would be better.

In fact, a very bad and common joke in Spanish is asking: “What’s ____a?” “____o’s wife.” Replace with your favorite noun.

The best part, despite his 5 in a row field goals which was awesome by the way… was his dagger at the end… much like Findog. I’m sure that this guy is ready for the big leagues… What I find hard to decide at the moment, is if he should back up RJ for 10-15 minutes instead of Finley… Thankfully there are still a few summer league games to evaluate that… I hope I will be able to decide after the summer league, or at the very least the second summer league, which I was just informed existed! Crazy, I know… I’m perplexed, but enthusiastic about it.

You think Finley’s D is worse than Hairston’s? But Finley is a savvy vet so he should at least know when to be exactly where to be right?
I would still pick Hairston over Finley though, mostly for the development of the young players in order to transition more smoothly past the Duncan era in a few years. In the playoffs however, if Hairston has not developed as much as I would like him to have, I would give Finley the majority of the minutes. Does anyone agree or am I doing something wrong?

As far as position, Finley is probably better right now. But Hairston can keep up with his man better, and has the length to bother guys. Maybe I’m looking at it from a biased point of view, since I’ve been in love with Hairston ever since he effectively guarded Lebron for a few possessions last year.

TLO, you might want to be careful the way you throw around the word “savvy” around here in PtR. It carries a bit more weight (not all complimentary) than you’d expect. If you have the time, do a search on it and cruise through some of the older uses of it, to get some of the flavor.

okay will do. I know that some of you guys use that word to describe Jacque Vaughn, and sort of in a teasing manner when you do it. Vaughn doesn’t bring much to the table, yet he somehow managed to convince Pop that he’s “savvy” enough merit minutes for some time now. That act alone I believe is pretty “savvy”. Okay I’ll stop. So, we have a starting 5 of Hill-Mcclinton-Hairston-Gist-Ian with Dejuan coming off the bench and ROMEL FRICKIN BECK?
Man i want to watch some toros games next season!!!!
SERIOUSLY, ROMEL BECK? I was very impressed with his play for mexico, and I wonder for a lot of time what the hell happened to that skinny guy who embarrased kobe and USA.
I cant watch summer league games, but from what I read there was a discussion about his position. He is not a PG. He is a 6’7 shooting guard, with a tayshuanesque frame. He reminds me a lot of Kevin Martin, a skinny 2 incredibly efficient at scoring wth 3’s and free throws and 0 …no wait….-100 defense. Great as a bucket getter off the bench me thinks. We are a bit stocked at the guard positions, but i would love if he could stick around with the toros or something.

summer league
george hill with not only 25 points, but 11-11 from the line. talk about talent. and dejuan blair got it done on the boards, strange part is he did it on the defensive glass while draft experts raved on his offensive rebounding. nice!
Hill...but there was competition
Hill looked impressive running the show and his confidence never wavered. You can tell he’s been working with Chip Engelland and the results are in the box score.
Blair was just a BEAST on the boards. He has it all…the timing/anticipation, length, arms, and sheer will to get to the ball. He tried to do too much on offense at times, but that’s to be expected.
Hairston’s outside shot was falling…that’s all he needs because the defense and understanding are there. If the shot keeps falling he’ll find himself on the roster and maybe dressing out.
didnt get to see it, but you gotta like anyting that has blair pulling down 10 boards. wonder if i can find this game archived on-line somewhere?
liked to see the lines put up by hairston and romel beck – and of course we would expect george to have a big week. perhaps one more game like that from him and the spurs will dial out his minutes.
if you pay nba.com $15, you can rewatch all of the games
The craziest part about blair’s 10 rebounds was that it was in like 20-22 minutes.
Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?
Blair had 10 boards in a little over 22 minutes = 21.8 rp48 minutes! Last year dwight howard averaged 18.6 per 48 minutes. It’s one summer league game i know, but he had similar efficiency in college.
by GodsLoveSpursGlory on Jul 12, 2009 9:33 PM CDT reply actions
What a great way to spend a Sunday, 4 rows behind the bench. The action is sooooo much faster and way more physical seeing it in person. The guys really bang and beat up on each other. I guess they take advantage of the fact that they can’t foul out.
One thing that really sticks out about Blair (I posted this in the game thread and I believe someone else mentioned it as well) is the way he positions himself under the boards for rebounds. The ability he has is almost Rodman-like. He goes after the ball and swallows it, engulfs it. It’s almost like he is playing by himself out there. He has huge hands, bigger arms. Tree trunks for legs. I LOVE HIM. I’d give him my ACL’s.
Hill had a great game. He pushed the tempo. Don Neuman was screaming at him to push the ball upcourt a la 7SOL it seemed like. When he wasn’t playing, he was coaching from the bench, yelling out plays to the players on the court and telling guys where to be on the court. That was cool to see and hear.
Hairston caught fire in the second half and finished with a good game also.
Ian was OK. ATS told me after the game that Ian told him in his interview that this was his first game in a year, so you could tell he was rusty and trying to find his rhythm. I think he will be fine once he gets a few games under his belt.
McClinton was horrible. It looked like he was trying too hard. Bad passes, bad shots, but hey, it’s only one game.
James Gist can get up. He went up for one rebound and it seemed like his head was about 2 feet above the rim. I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the Spurs roster come the beginning of the season. He’s a nice guy also, I got a pic of him in the concession area. He was talking to a friend about the block Tolliver got on him, playing it off like he meant to do that and give Tolliver the block, it was funny.
That’s about it, everyone else was below average, mediocre. I’ll post some pics in this thread once I re-learn how to do it again.
It is what it is.

Best part about Blair's boards
Didn’t seem like any one of them was an “easy” rebound or that he was already in a position to make the play when he did. I was EXTREMELY impressed with his awareness, timing, and suction cup hands.
Look at Blair’s face. It’s like he’s in a rebound trance. He’s probably thinking to himself, “Even if Jack makes this free throw I’m STILL going to get the rebound”.

It is what it is.
We are who we are.
I just love how there’s two guys between Blair, because they know that he’ll eat anyone there, but there’s no one next to Yawn, because they know he’s just a sheep… Blair even looks like he’s half a foot away from the paint from everyone else around him, but still looks confident enough to grap the board… I totally agree with other people above, I would give Blair my ACL’s anytime. This guy just has way too much potential… but not in the sense that most people might think.

The government pigs tried executed him. Just because you’re government is trying to capture a man (Osama Bin Laden), doesn’t mean that the whole country hates hi (haha, bad example I know). Anyways, Osama isn’t trying to liberate America, Che was trying to do that from Bolivia. At least from it’s corrupt government officials. For this reason, the majority of Bolivians like him, At least when they’re young, in college and without money. Once they graduate, and have real jobs, they throw away their socialist ideals. But, regardless, they still admire Che.
Oh, and the man I met in Bolivia wasn’t part of Che’s infantry. He was actually part of the infantry that executed him. I don’t know why I accidentally wrote otherwhise (alcohol).

That’s a popular myth among conservatives: a liberal is either a young kid or an grown up idiot. It’s usually backed in USAian forums by Churchill’s quote, that went something like: “Any man who is under 30 and is not a liberal has not heart, and any man who is over 30 and is not a conservative has no brains.”
Obviously, I disagree, but discussing this at length might lead us way out of the comfort zone of a basketball blog, so if you want to talk about it, just drop me an e-mail. :)

haha, that’s a cool quote. I agree with you that a liberal isn’t bounded by certain qualities that they have to meet (the same with a conservative). Bolivians, much like most cultures like to make fun of neighboring countrymen… I like Argentine people…. and you are right, we are supposed to have some real beef with Chilean people (I wonder where Chilai is at the moment, jk) they took our ocean touching land after all (making Bolivia a landlocked country). I feel there is nothing sadder than a country that cannot touch the sea, (much like a man that cannot escape past and drown it onto the ocean). Still, I’m half Bolivian, but I consider myself more than that since I spent major years of my developing stage there.

Yeah Rikiddo, I would imagine that applies to states ass well, but it hurts countries so much more. Bolivians really hate Chileans because of it (since they beat us for our only Sea Land), but Arizonans would also be upset, but you’re not a whole nation that has nowhere else to go to find a sea. It’s really different. A Nation with with an Ocean border helps a nation so much with trades and all that stuff. There’s really no backup to that.
"He's Manu Ginobili"
by the little o on Jul 13, 2009 1:55 AM CDT up reply actions
Okay, perhaps I should clarify. Bolivians don’t “hate” Chileans. If a person from Chile greets a Bolivian and tell him where he’s from, a Bolivian wouldn’t hate him automatically. Someone being Chilean only gives you another excuse to not like him if you already don’t like him. It’s kinda like an old grudge for that mostly old people have, but younger people are aware of. In school they sometimes make you sing songs about Litoral (place that Chileans took from Bolivia in a war) and they try to brainwash you into thinking that it still belongs to us. But no, we don’t “hate” them. We do really dislike Peruvians for some reason (I don’t know why).

Thanks LD. I thought you were in Argentina Brazil not Australia? Or did you mean “Thunder From Down Under”? Anyhoo, you should have seen these 3 girls sitting behind me, they were speaking Spanish Portugese, so I assume they were from Argentina Brazil, you would have appreciated them. I seriously considered asking them for a picture for your blog, but I don’t speak Spanish Portugese.
It is what it is.

asking for a picture doesn’t require knowing their language, since all you have to do is hand signals and most people would get the point. Still if you were not comfortable asking for their picture upfront, you should have at least asked for them to take a picture of you with someone else. After that picture, then you ask to take a picture of them. It works better that way, and they usually agree. The fact that you don’t speak their language helps you lower your points in the creeper scale in their eyes. and gives you more points in the cute/foreign guy scale. Do it next time. It will work. Language is not a barrier for pictures, trust me.

Question.
Given the previous posts about McDyess, some people are expecting Ian to pick up the big man loose ends. Right? God I hope not.

It’s hard to make any judgements about a guy playing his first game in over a year. In fact, I wouldn’t expect all that much out of him until a month or two into the season.

i would be happy if the Spurs sign him only for whenever we play the Lakers and put him on against Kobe, only to get the crowd cheering. I think Kobe would get pissed and explode for 50 though. Still, the rest of the Lakers wouldn’t find their groove, and we would win by a buzzer beater by Beck, as he grabs his balls after making the last shot. Oh Mason… that was such as beautiful/bold gesture.

This game started at 11pm my time, so I wasn’t able to watch it, but I really appreciate all the work that you are doing Wayne, and the comments from everybody else as well. This is the first time i’ve been excited about summer league in about 5 or 6 years, so it’s great to have some top-notch reporting coming out of Vegas. Much appreciated.

Blair
it’s his first time being a part of some NBA action and he proved himself with a double double. I was expecting less but was instead pleasantly surprised. Hill is in his second year and is already fairly established at the NBA level, plus I can’t vote for someone with 4 turnovers.
Who’s this Gee dude?
Randy Blythe, Singer of Lamb of God- "Words can be broken, so can bones....." Omerta by Lamb of God
in my opinion
alonzo gee is a less than noteworthy banger who played his colelge ball at alabama. he doesnt have too much size, quicks, or scoring ability. he was able to fare pretty well in college against guys that couldnt match his size and strength. this was basically teams from smaller schools. against, the big boys he was an also ran type of player.
i didnt get a chance to see any of the first game, so i’m not sure “how he looked” out there, but i dont expect to see him anywhere in south texas any time soon.
