48 MoH: Spurs make offer on Euro Big man

I just read a nice article at 48 MoH and it got me all excited (not like that, come on).  Of course I'm easily excitable (I walked right into that one), but I regress.  The article talks about a Center from Greece.  Yiannis Bouroussis is his name.  There's a report that the Spurs just offered him 10-12 million for a 3 year deal.  Here's a little tidbit from Tim Varner's article:

When John Hollinger begins to translate his stats from Europe to the NBA, he’ll need to unbutton his collar and wipe the steam off his glasses. Bouroussis is all kinds of productive.

That should get anybody excited.  Here's a link to the article:  48 MoH Article  Tim has some concerns about this guy and makes them known.  Take a gander and let me know you're thoughts.

Stupid Magic, don't y'all know you're supposed to WIN?!

6’11" and more than 250 lbs. and he puts up stats like that…if he is even half as good as that in the NBA, it will be a serious improvement and for only 3-4 mil a year. If the guy takes the deal, this is money in the bank. If Yawn is whatever the Spurs believe him to be and we get this guy, our front court could be fairly solid next year. Then add Splitter after next season and that a serious front court.

Even if this guy doesn’t take the offer, it shows a great move by our FO in my opinion.

+1

If it’s true, at least this season was the silver lining that caused the FO to wake up.

48MoH sure know how to get us excited. This could make up for the Scola debacle.

S.A. is always always looking for an appropriate running mate for Tim Duncan, and anyone who follows European basketball knows Bouroussis’ reputation as a bad-ass bruiser. It seems like a match made in Heaven.

debbie downer time

yall know that this is our big free agent signing right? some unproven slow big guy from greece, i know the upside but goodness this seems risky. Like say good by to Ariza, Kleiza, Sheed, Childress, whomever else… I mean those guys may be available via sign and trade but thats super doubtful. so like 48moh said we will have to address our super glaringly huge hole at the 3 via trade or draft or toros. ugh.

i will say there is some upside to this in my opinion

- this means for sure that Oberto, Gooden, Bonner or Thomas and i will bet Bowen too are all gone. hopefully we can turn the above expiring contracts into something of value.
- hopefully this means the toros guys will fill the 3 spot instead of the Spurs relying on fin and bowen
- and i will agree even though this is a big risk in my opinion because i think we were weaker at the 3 spot, but even if this guy is somewhat of a bust he and ian are still better than the frontcourt we had last year.

by staves27 on Jun 5, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Varner meant to have the negative subtext that you picked up about having to use trades, draft, and the toros to help us at the 3. This guy is coming incredibly cheap if he signs for the offer. Camby would cost the same price for 1 year, not 3. We’d still be stacked with all of our expiring contracts and 3 second round picks and Toro player rights if this works out. The guy is like 25 years old too. He could also prove a valuable mid-season trade asset if he agrees to a contract but doesn’t fit our system. Honestly, I don’t see any down side to this move. Gooden and Ime are the only players that are FA’s at the moment. Finley would be complete idiot to forgo his millions next season by opting out. Bowen isn’t cut until July 1st if thats what the FO wants. Bowen could be more valuable in a trade as that team can waive him and reap the savings benefits.

There aren’t many guys of his size in the draft and I doubt any with any skill would fall to our picks in the second round. Drafting a 5 is incredibly difficult in the late 1st to second round. This guy is proven against better talent than college and D-league as well which seems much less risky than the draft. Varner says this guy can shoot the 3 too. How many big guys currently in the league or in the draft fit this guys profile? How many SF’s are there in the league that are better than our current rotation or were mentioned in draft coverage as possible options?

One commenter on 48MoH also has the great point that our offer probably has a time limit on it that forces Bouroussis to make up his mind before this effects any NBA-related plans like the draft or NBA free agency.

BTW on just teh 4 guys you mentioned:
Ariza: never would have come to SA
Kleiza: alright but only way he is coming to SA is if we overpay or make a trade with Denver and over-trade
Sheed: 8 million a year????
Childress: Has he even said once that he wants to come back to the NBA next season?

On others:
Camby: We failed to get him already with the same pieces
VC: see above
Jefferson: see above

look i’ve seen this team make stupid move after stupid move for the past 21 years (of course mixed in with some pretty damn good moves too so don’t go off on me) but this just doesn’t seem like a good move. Could this guy be the next Ginobili – sure he could, could he also flop or be the next Oberto, thats probably more likely. Am I against the FO being risky, no i’m not. I just personally from my own armchair don’t think this is the right move for the moment considering our other glaring needs. and to just be confrontational because its late and i’m bored i will respond with the following:

I never said that those 4 guys were shoe-ins or even feasible, those are just the 4 most talked about names on this blog for future spur hopefuls, and my only point was if we had even a chance in hell in landing ANY semi-big name FA its now gone. and just for the record i think there is a small but realistic chance ariza would come here since LA needs to sign him and Odom, but we would have to use all the money we would potentially have. With Kleiza i don’t think we would have to overpay at all, very few teams are looking to spend this summer and Denver is already over the cap without re-signing Kleiza, Anderson, or Smith, so i think the guy they cut from those 3 is Kleiza if they decide to cut one, and i didn’t ever mention the spurs should sign and trade for him. Sheed asking for $8 mil was only a rumor, and i just threw Childress’ name in there because its a popular name to bring up. I hope to god the Spurs don’t trade for Camby, VC, or Jefferson under any circumstances

I’m very glad you feel this way about this potential pick up and i hope he makes you happy. I’m perfectly happy being very skeptical and glum about this addition to the team and am very content being in “prove me wrong” mode about him.

I wasn’t trying to be confrontational but persuasive. I guess after last season and the way it ended, I just want news. And this news is so vague that I’m latching onto it because it seems real and not like a pipe dream like some of those names that are so often thrown around. So because its late and I’m recuperating, here is some response which is also meant as a persuasive list of arguments to get a nonbeliever on the Greek boat….

1. He is likely not the next Manu, unless all you mean by that is a successful Euro to NBA player.
2. Oberto wasn’t that bad in his prime to use him as the opposite of being a Manu. The fact is that Oberto is not in his prime anymore though and we aren’t seeing the returns on that 3.6 million dollar salary but Yawn, Tiger Spitter, or Inflammation could all be better investments at this point.
3. If you honestly think Ariza would come here, then its like pretending we are the only team outside of LA for him. Its like “LA pays Ariza his money” or “SA pays him everything they have and he comes here.” but really there are like 10 other options like “The Cavs want him” or “Miami is an awesome city to live in” or whatever other shit players say before they ditch out on a low offer or a small market team or not getting to be a starter on a great team. Thats why we get players like Romaju and Cleveland gets Mo Williams.
4. Also a rumor but Sheed is reportedly getting 10 million a year from the Cavs. I think we’d be getting bunk beds and kool-aid if our FO paid him that money.
5. Kleiza is similar to my views on Ariza in that the Spurs will have to outbid other teams to get him. So isolated from any players names, would you rather the Spurs get in a bidding war for a NBA role player or try to get a euro league starter we have an inside track on in for less money?
6. Losing most of our MLE on arguably the best big man not in the NBA seems like a good risk when we keep every other asset we have in tact for going after SF’s which is an easier position to fit physically than the 5 (see #8)
7. Our FO is being active which is a good sign because we’re too smart to not get some payoffs on all the assets we have. The saying is don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Well, the Spurs have the MLE egg, 3 draft eggs, Ian’s egg, Splitter’s egg, 8 contracts expiring after next season not including TD or TP eggs, our D-League eggs, Gists’ egg….basically we have a lot of tools for our FO and they are putting that one MLE egg in one basket…
8. A quick look at the current Toros roster….2 players taller than 6’9" and one of them is Ian…. 7 players between 6’6" and 6’9"….so are we more likely to get a PF/C from our farm system or a SF….Marcus Williams, Justin Bowen, or Eric Dawson could all see 10 day contracts next season and Marcus Williams could even get a permanent roster spot depending on what we do with the draft…..Marcus Williams did good in the DL last year….23 ppg, 5 apg, and 7 rpg…I can’t comment on his D though has I’ve hardly seen him play
9. We can count on this young Greek guy for big minutes…minutes that KT and Oberto aren’t giving us…KT only had 25 regular season games over 20 minutes and 1 in our 5 playoff games…plus we all read LatinD’s post about dunking and Oberto and KT didn’t dunk once all season… and he will cost around the same price as either of them but is more athletic and can play the minutes they combined to give us
10. Isn’t it better having slightly more hope in the bigs for next season and still needing a wing rather than feeling the panic of knowing we desperately need improvement at 2 spots?

Staves, hopefully this gives you even a shred more confidence in this move, because even if you’re just playing Devil’s advocate and skeptical, we still have plenty of options to fill our roster needs even if this fails….

Check out his highlights from a late 2008 game

Just saw a youtube clip of him, and this is eerie, guys. I look at this and it’s like I’m watching Tim Duncan. I’m not kidding. I know I joke a lot, but I’m not kidding.

Forward to :34 of the link below. See Yiannis at the top of the key setting a pic for the smaller guy. Witness Bouroussis rolling to the bucket to accept the pass on the way to the hole. Stare in awe as he watches his point guard ignore him and drive for a layup. Feel the excitement as YB snares the rebound and misses his follow up attempt. Thrill to the big man’s hustle as he corrals his own rebound and elevates every bit of six inches off the floor to kiss a point blank layup off the backboard for two.

Exactly like Duncan in every respect.

Late regular season 2009 Duncan, that is.

I agree, but if you’re of the same mind as ATS, couldn’t the Spurs use some physical inside play? Obviously he’ll have to prove he can do that, but if these reports are true, he’s going to give the good ol’ college try.

We’re not thinking he’s a bruiser because of his size, but rather, because that’s what people who follow him say about him. Personally, I hadn’t heard of the guy until 48moh brought him up in an article a few weeks ago.

I love the fact that he’s a powerful 5 who can shoot the 3 ball. We would now have the ability to space the floor with him, spot him up behind the 3 point line and force opposing team’s bigs to cover the arch. Thus opening up the lane for Tim, Tony, & Manu to do business.

Even if you are highly skeptical of this specific move, it shows that our FO is being active already. Isn’t that at least a sign worthy of optimism. On draftxpress, he is third in euro league PER but #1 is Pops and he only played 2 games and #2 guy only played 1 game compared to this guys 22 games. Splitter is 8th.

by BlaseE on Jun 5, 2009 2:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Just a thought: does this mean that our FO has given up on Splitter? Or perhaps they may use him as trade bait… They’ve certainly given themselves options.

by Tim C. on Jun 5, 2009 2:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I hadn’t thought of it. Draftxpress says he is a PF/C that could be a C. Splitter is a center. Varner seems to think our lineup in 2010 would be Yawn, Splitter, this guy, and an athletic younger guy from the D League or the draft. We could even trade this guy if we wanted to keep Splitter but not both. His contract would be pretty attractive at 3-4 million a year for 2 years as long as he isn’t a complete flop.

by BlaseE on Jun 5, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s what I like about this. If this guy doesn’t turn out to be super awesome, and it appears that he will at least be better than Bonner/Olberto from these reports and therefore have some value out on the market. This gives the Spurs options in 2010 if they can in fact nab Splitter.

by Big50 on Jun 5, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I want to know more, because right now im freaking out.
I dont care to have unatlethic players (im a spurs fan after all) as long as they can do their jobs. So what if this guy cant jump to save his life? Duncan cant jump over a phone book and last time I checked he RULEZ. Besides, the guy we have been crying for, Scola, isnt much of an atlhetic guy either. So Borousis is a hard nosed big man, who likes physical play in the paint and rebounds well. He can defend the “bangers” inside, but I dont see him defending the Stoudamires, Aldriges, Wests and Nowitkzis of the world. He is suposed to shoot 3’s, but with the larger 3 point lane we can expect midrange jumpers at least……………

Can you remind me again why we need a fat greek Thomas?

I’m not sure if you’re happy or upset…but to read what Varner says it’s his lateral foot speed that’s his concern. I’m not sure if he’s unathletic or if it’s really just that one issue for Varner. Also, it’d be like having a much younger Thomas, who can shoot, still bang inside and rebound and hopefully jump over a phone book.

by Big50 on Jun 5, 2009 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

in Greek play he is second in blocks per 40 which makes me think his opponents can jump even lower or he has a freakish wingspan or Big50 has a point about his athleticism not being called out by Varner

this seems like a quick move to me, but im not necessarily against it. let’s measure it in the context of other moves in the off-season.

if he will truly be physical, then i think that is a good thing. the potential for some shooting range aso sounds good. he will have to guard poeple in order to stick in SA. certainly, this is not the cure for all of the spurs problems, but perhaps it is a start.

I'd rather see Ariza signed

as I believe SF is more of a weakness. But it sounds like we might be able to play him there as a big SF. Imagine a frontcourt of Duncan/Thomas/Bouroussis.

However, if this does work out, our issue of finding a decent big man will have been met (though I would still like to see Gooden return) Now we just need to address SF and PG (as it seems Mace will stay the backup PG and Hill will be playing SG)

As much as we like to fantasize about it around here, Ariza wasn’t very likely to begin with. I think Herrmann, a trade for Balkman(Denver) or maybe a sign-and-trade(Gooden could be useful to another team) for someone else is far more likely to happen. Either way, the FO seems to know already that they need to shake things up, and I’m sure this won’t be the only story we’ll be following in the offseason.

Would Bruce even play in a non-Spurs uni at this time in his career?

by CapHill on Jun 8, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How dare you. I’m onboard the Bruce-train, always have been and you know that.

And Bruce would NEVER suit up against SA; he’ll hang it up before then.

he might suit up

but he’d throw the game for us he’s so loyal.

Of course you’re on the Bruce-train. But I’ve vowed to never write about you in my diary.

Some thoughts are simply to dear to put on paper.

I bought a case of CS just the other day in your honor, FYI. It’s a pretty safe bet to say that since we’ve become brothers, I have developed diabetes.

The wife brought so much CS home from the store the other day, that I’m having to force myself to avoid it, otherwise I’ll never reach my fitness goal by my next birthday.

But I can’t blame her. It just tastes sooooo, good! Especially when you add some vanilla ice cream, as I’ve taken to doing occasionally. Yum.

Herrman/Balkman

that would be a great combo, and a very viable possibility. I love Bowen as much as the next guy, but he’s not really producing much for us point-wise (like he ever did) and his defense isn’t what it used to be. As much as it would hurt us fans, Herrman and Balkman would give us better chances to win than Bowen and the SF.

Screw the JV as an Asst. Coach; a much better idea would be to offer it to Bruce.

so true

JV would just teach the player how to dribble off their shoes

LOL. And how to not be a threat to score from 5ft and out when you’re wide open.

basically he uncoaches them

lol the Spurs FO should tell the other teams that he’s a great assistant coach. Imagine the results. He could make the Suns even worse, if that’s possible.

yes instead of it being nonexistant

it was merely a microscopic threat to the other team.

Did you really just shoot a single half court shot — today?

yeah right like he would just take one, make it, and call it a day. I’d shoot the shit out of that ball if I made my first half court attempt

actually, I could see myself doing that — but I like to quit on a good note. it’s more difficult to see myself making the first one. that’s the part of the story that seems like a bit of a stretch to me

actually

I had been shooting basketball for like an hour and was worn out so I was just like “Why not” so I heaved it and it amazingly went in. i didn’t shoot anymore cause I was too tired.
