Ten years ago today
amidst all the trades, here's a nice little bit of trivia:
Thanks to El Nono's translation of the following:
Duncan: "I don't know him"
Two weeks after the draft, playing on the Puerto Rico olympic qualifying tournament, Manu had his first taste of playing against NBA players.
One of his opponents was Tim Duncan, future teammate on the Spurs, and now friend of him. But at that time, he didn't even know who Manu was. The PF born in the Virgin Islands spoke with Ole with his usual poker face:
- Did you know a player from Argentina was drafted by your team?
I honestly didn't know that. Really?
- Yes, of course, it's number 5. His name is Emanuel Ginobili.
Nobody told me until now. I don't know him.
- Have you seen him? You think he could play next to you soon?
I don't know. From the Argentina team I only remember number 7 (Nocioni) because of the spectacular dunk he had. But the kid you mention must be talented, because not everybody catches the attention of my team and gets a spot in the draft.

Carina’s a “he”?
The ambigram’s still around, but there’s no use for game threads right now.

Carina’s a she.
And could you put the ambigram on the front page, ATS? Or is that impossible with this template?

I’ll look into it.
Carina, please send me an email? I want to talk to you about the ambigram.

Welcome back, carina. I’ve missed seeing your work lately.

GEE-no-BEE-lee
The pronunciation of his last name in the video is priceless.
Also:
This kid understands coming off of a screen. This kid understands moving without the ball to get his shot and he’s very solid defensively. I’ll tell ya, I think that’s a good pick at that point in the draft.
Can you say, “Understatement”? I knew you could.

actually that’s the proper pronounciation, with the emphasis on the BEE. We Americans have basically bastardized his last name into Gi-NO-blee, and I’m as guilty of it as anyone.
Give a man a chicken and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to chicken and he'll call you crazy and question your command of the English language.

Is this true?? Unbelievable. I’m gonna need an ARGENTINE ruling on this one.

Eh? Really? In Argentina we call him: Gee-NOH-bee-lee.

I’ll bet you guys treat the last two syllables like a diphthong and say ‘blee’ or maybe even ‘vlee’.

Nope. It’s clearly “bee-lee”. That’s usually what sounds wrong about the announcers’ pronunciation, or Barkley’s.

Hmmm, I don’t believe you. I will mark this down as a mental note and will pay attention when you come to the states.

Why not? I doubt any Mexican fans say “blee”. In Spanish you read it as it’s written, and the pronunciation rules are very clear. Just ask Chilai or Hipuks, if he ever shows up.

The pronunciation rules are very clear, but people speak lazily. Like the way Americans pronounce jumping ‘jumpn’.

Ginóbili = Gee-NOH-bee-lee. But like ATS says.. in Panama people get lazy and say Gee-NOH-blee

Mrs ATS also informed that is not a diphthong. She said it’s just lazy. So, no diphthong for you.

For us, diphthongs are “ai”, “au”, “ei”, “eu”, “oi” and “ou” sounds – but I’m not sure what you meant anyway.

I dont get why united statians have so much problem with ginobili…. ITS SIMPLE: GI NO BI LI, say that fast a couple of times.
"Rock and Roll angels bring that HardRock Hallelujah"
I guess we have such a hard time because Argentines type in all caps, and won’t use bold or italics to show which syllables, if any, the stress falls on.

That’s because Argentines speak to each other only through shouting, as they grew up watching infomercials with Billy Mays.

Well, even LatinD said you guys get lazy with the end and say Blee.

SiMA, you working on that or not?

You’re gonna have to remind me about this. With work being crazy this time of year and PtR suddenly having an average of 7 new threads per day, lots of things get lost upstairs. I feel like how ATS must feel on…… days. It sounds intriguing though, a list of good putdowns/insults and their levels of severity.

Too bad the Spurs didn’t play him in 2001 & 2002 – they could have really used his aggressiveness and tenacity against the Lakers in the playoffs.
Damn, I’d just read that article and was about to mention this… :)

From Manu's Facebook yesterday
Otra interesante nota. 10 años pasaron ya de la muy particular selección de los Spurs en el draft del ’99. Qué carita la mía por esos días, eh! //// Interesting article about the curious ’99 Spurs draft selection. Today is the 10th anniversary of the “lucky” day.
Here’s the article
Just goes to show how the FO operates and has operated. In the midst of a long playoff run that would eventually lead to a championship, the Spurs did their homework and picked a player who would help lead us to more championships. Granted, the Spurs had probably been scouting him for some time , I’m sure they were ecstatic to see Manu was still on the board.
Definitely a day that will live in Spurs infamy.
It is what it is.
We are who we are.
