Yao done for season and beyond?
This really blows. I hate seeing huge injuries to character guys.

Maybe this is wishful thinking, but…
Since the Rocket’s season is esentially over before it started, you think they’d be willing to trade anyone?(Scola maybe?)

Never. The Rockets are well-served to blow up that team at this point.

Damn, that truly sucks. Yao’s a great, great player.

I feel so bad for him, for the Rockets, and for me — I really love watching him play. I enjoy his charming, shy personality, his deadpan sense of humor, and his beautiful grace both on and off the court.
I feel like crying.
This might be the most complimentary post I’ve ever seen of a person. I doubt his mom even thinks this highly of him.

This is especially bad after Deke’s injury.

I feel bad for Yao, but this is not surprising news. Due to his national team commitments, he’s been playing ball year old most of his life and at 7-5, 290 pounds, it’s only a matter of time before his legs, feet & knees yield to that amount of running & jumping. Maybe him taking a year off would be a blessing in disguise.

Yeah, reminds me of a story I read when the Rockets had the #1 pick about how the Rockets should either not draft Yao, or should do so only after considering the probability that he wouldn’t have a full career, because of his extreme size.
What a shame.

I read that, but I think he’ll at least try to come back after taking a year off because he’s got plenty of heart and he doesn’t seem like he’ll end his career on that note. Also the Rockets have said that they will have at least 3 specialists take another look at his feet and plan the course of action from that point. Russ Bengtson from Slam Magazine had an accurate quote on the situation. Accurate in my opinion anyway.
Russ Bengtson Posted: Jun.29 at 4:04 pm
Had Yao been treated like a commodity, he might still be healthy. Instead, his treatment—both at the hands of the Chinese national team and the Rockets—has bordered on abuse. Hope everyone’s happy.

Let me also state that I don’t know for sure if he’ll be able to come back from this injury if it’s deemed as chronic and/or could be debilitating for him as he gets older. I’m just saying if he takes a year off, he may have a chance to come back.
"There's a thin line between to laugh with and to laugh at." - Richard Pryor
Yeah, that will suck. He’s a truly classy individual.
But what about this nugget from Adrian:
That isn’t easy in a sophisticated and rabid NBA market like Houston,
With all due respect to The Dream Shake, anybody who hangs out on a blog is rabid, Houston is NOT a city that comes to my mind when talking about sophisticated or rabid when it comes to the NBA. If fact, I don’t if many cities are more fair-weather toward a team than Houston is toward the Rockets.

I agree with you, and I’m from Houston AND a Rockets fan. The Rockets have a fairly stable and relatively reliable following in Houston, but sophisticated? Rabid? No.
I’m from Houston too. Grew up a Rockets fan. Where in H-town are ya from?

I want my Manu
I was born at Hermann Hospital, spent the first 3 years of my life in Austin while dad went to law school, then we moved back to Houston and kind of bounced about the Belair/Sharpstown area until I was in third grade, when we moved out to the soulless burbs straddling Spring and northwest Houston. Went to schools in Klein ISD, if that tells you anything.
I think you just said Walter Hermann was your father.

No, I said Walter Hermann gave birth to me. No, that’s not right either. I said I was born AT Hermann. So, I guess as she was giving birth, my mother kind of . . . aimed me . . . at Hermann?
Wait, does Walter Hermann resemble this building?

I was wondering if we even needed that part. ; )
Born in Pasadena, moved to Sharpstown, then to Kleinwood, then to Katy (off Avenue D – junior high years), then to Aldine (just east of 45 on 1960 – 8th grade), then to Humble (I spent all four years at Humble High), then to Bear Creek, then to Clear Lake, then off Fuqua by I-45.
Then I graduated from UoH and lived in some apartments at Richmond and Fountainview (close to the Galleria was enjoyable) and then back to Bear Creek before moving to Austin.
I guess I’m one of the few people around here who actually has good memories about the ‘93-’94 and ‘94-’95 seasons. But I left in ‘95 and after the team let Hakeem leave, I got kinda jaded. Then I went w/o a team for a while, and in ’99 when the Spurs won, I was happy for them. Started being a fan during the Shaq-Kobe years of dominance, and that’s it.

Ah, but here’s the difference:
The Mavs and the Rockets struggle against a kind of perpetual creeping apathy from their hometowns (excluding, of course, playoff time, when all the fair-weather fans come leaping out of the woodwork).
Whereas in Denver, there seems to be practically an antipathy toward the Nuggets—sort of the way you hear people from Philly badmouth the Sixers.
And the Suns are practically a tragic opera. I think they have pretty stalwart fans, but it’s just too painful for them right now to exist. They walk through a shadowland, a grey, neverending valley of sorrow . . . which is kind of funny, given the team name.
Good points. There is a definite antipathy (another good vocab word from the PtRers) towards the Nuggets’ front office and its ineptness over the years. However, Doug Moe, Thompson, English, etc., have not been painted with the same brush and are still well-loved by the oldtimers. Georgie Pudgy is not.
Bad for him, good for us
I suppose, but the track record with guys over 7’1’’ or so isnt pretty.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I'll probably miss his quotes more than anything....
“He’s keeping the fire at my back the whole time and I’ve got one glass of water. You have to understand, I’ve got one glass of water and he’s got a whole lot of fire.”
- Yao Ming, on Jeff Van Gundy.
This means Scola will be the primary post option, and he will make an all-star game probably. There you have it, go set yourselves on fire now.

Well that completely blows and at only 28 y/o....!!!
I liked him. I guess they will need the other docs to be seen before they submit to the awaited dire disclosure/decision that everyone will wait for. Usually I am an optimist but it does not sound good, for this little area of pivot to hold up such a stature. damn.. alas we will see.

Also totally bummed about this.
Yao is definitely one of my ten favorite players in the league and at times he’s just so dominant, I’m really going to miss him. There’s really never been anyone like him, he’s like a better version of Rik Smits I guess, but with way more charisma.
One of my favorite moments last year was the Rockets press conference after they beat Portland to finally move past the first round and Yao and Artest were at the podium, and Artest made a joke about going into the stands (he was going for a loose ball late in the game) and everyone laughed but Yao had like the biggest laugh of them of them all and he was just so happy and I was like thrilled for him, just to have this one moment. The guy’s got a great smile and you could see that despite the cultural differences, the different backgrounds, how he’s grown very comfortable in the league and with his teammates. He’s assimilated.
It’s kind of a downer on what has otherwise been, I’ll admit, a great day for me.
From a Spurs-centric point of view though, I think the injury to Yao might influence Artest to go to some other contender and ruin them with his ball-hoggery and jackass chucking. That’d be good for us, if he went to like, Denver or Dallas or somebody like that.
Give a man a chicken and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to chicken and he'll call you crazy and question your command of the English language.

they are sounding pretty full of themselves.
yeah support the local team, but they aren’t contending in a long shot like SA and HOU. well HOU not so much anymore, unless something good happens to yao.
13 points in 39 seconds. Enough said.
the fans take their cues from their owner. He’s a classless asshat so that gives them and the players they root for to be classless asshats. The Mavs are like the most unlikeable organization in the league, if you ask me

Lauri last night I went to a show in Pomona. It’s a little college town kind of and there is this little indie strip of shops like vintage clothes, tattoo parllor, bars and even a book store! Well I got quite tipsy and ended up stumbling my way into this book store asking them all about “Prep” but they didn’t have it and I was so mad. Today I’m going to Barnes and Nobles to see if they have it once my terrible hang over wears off.

Oh, B&N will have it for sure.
For hangovers, the only thing that ever made me feel better was a Coke out of one of those little green-glass bottles poured over finely crushed ice.
The glass DOES make a difference in the taste.

beer better better!
I don’t know about jrw, but I wasn’t being sarcastic. I like the taste from a bottle much better, especially when it comes to Coke. Best of all is the Mexcian Coke, because they still use sugar rather than corn syrup.
No sarcasm was used in the making of this post
Glass>plastic
Sugar>corn syrup
Not sure about the ice, though, and why exactly it needs to be crushed by Michael Finley.
What’s that? Oh … OOHHHHH. Well, that makes much more sense then.

Three word for you… Kosher for Passover. If you live near a large traditional Jewish community you might be able to find Kosher for Passover Coke, which by definition of the Ashkenazi rules cannot have corn syrup. You would be able to find this in March/April and can stock up at that time.
