Spurs Salary Situation 09-10
Salary Overview
Source Cap Rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Salary_Cap#Trading_and_the_Salary_Cap
Salary Source: http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm
PG1: T. Parker (12.6m)
SG1: R. Mason (3.8m)
SF1: R. Jefferson (14.2m)
PF1: M. Bonner (3.2m)
C1: T. Duncan (22.2m)
PG2: G. Hill (1.1m)
SG2: M. Ginobili (10.7m)
SF2: M. Finley (2.5m)
PF2: I. Mahinmi (1.1m)
C2: D. Blair (.8m?) *based on last year's 2ndrnd picks. M. Chalmers
11th:
12th:
13th:
Spurs Salary: 72.2 Million
Salary Cap: 56 Million
Luxury Tax: 71 Million
Exceptions
MLE: 5.6 Million
Bi-annual exception?: 1.6 Million
- If we use the MLE, it'll actually cost (5.6x2=11.2) 11.2 million because we are over the Lux Tax. And we will also lose the benefits of being a team under the Lux Tax. (Luxury Tax revenues are normally redistributed evenly among non-tax-paying teams, so there is often a several-million-dollar incentive to owners not to pay the luxury tax.)
- If Finley opts out, we will be under the luxury tax. It would be huge favor to the organization.
- We need 3 more players to fill out the team, assuming Blair is going to make the team and sign the minimum rookie salary.
- 2-3 minimum salary players will probably fill out the team.
- The MLE will only be used if we could get a player worth 10million, like R. Wallace, S. Marion and J. Childress.

Quite the useful post, benrojas, thanks. I imagine one of those spots will be saved for Hairston or McClinton, and either will be reasonably cheap.

Good stuff, ben. Rec’d to the salary chapeau.
Question, since the MLE will cost us double if we’re over the cap, what happens if Finley opts out and we’re under the cap when we excersice the MLE. Does it count once or twice?
I guess the question is this: can the MLE take you over the cap or not? I always thought that it couldn’t. Anybody know?

Well, the cap is at 56M, so the Spurs are well over the cap, and have been for years. But that luxury tax threshold is the real killer. And according to what I’ve read, it doesn’t matter how a team goes past the threshold, every dollar over the threshold is doubled by the tax.
Even if Fin opts out, the Spurs will likely go over the tax – but the drafting of Blair has actually helped by providing a cheap roster spot for a contributor. Hairston/Williams/McClinton could also be helpful in that regard.

but if Fin opts out
we won’t be able to get a quality back up SF without MLE, which will of course be used on a big man. If we don’t get a good back up, we’ll have to hope and pray RJ makes it another full season. If he doesn’t, then it’s over come playoff time.

I'm all jealous now
There is no new creme soda logo.
But there is a how to make, and a song, and a White Stripes song, a search for the best, and an interview with a 70’s garage band by the name CREME SODA. (Good thing they used the “creme” spelling, otherwise Bruce and Clapton might have sued!)

cap, mle, tax, etc won’t be determined until the moratorium ends on July 8th.
btw, last season’s cap was $58.68 million.

hey… i have a question… if for some reason, the FO determines that they only need one player, can they use the mle+biannual+the vets min to sign one player? or say, use 2M of the mle to sign a player, and then use the remaining mle+biannual and vets min to sign another? is that possible?
by theonlyromeo on Jul 2, 2009 7:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope. The exceptions are independent of each other, and can’t be combined on one player.
